Abstract

Simultaneous interpreting is an interpreting mode which occurs simultaneously between the interpreter and the speaker. This paper discusses simultaneous interpreting and the strategies used in simultaneous interpreting. Simultaneous interpreting gives more challenges for the interpreter since the interpreter has to translate orally what has been said within the time allowed by the speed of the speaker. Thus, it is more complicated and needs more attention to the output and active language skills.

Abstract

This study investigated the function and stylistic impact of compound words in Mark Twain's the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Employing a mixed-methods approach combining corpus linguistics and qualitative content analysis, the study examined the types, frequency, and narrative contributions of compound words within the novel. Analysis revealed 127 unique compound words, with a preponderance of Noun + Noun constructions among compound nouns. These constructions facilitated concise meaning conveyance, contributing to the clarity and directness of Twain's prose. The study elucidated how Twain strategically employs compound words to enhance character development, enrich imagery, reflect regional dialect and culture, and subtly reinforce thematic elements. The varied use of compound types—open, closed, and hyphenated—contributes to a dynamic and engaging narrative style. This study underscored the importance of attending to micro-level linguistic features in literary analysis, demonstrating how seemingly simple lexical choices can significantly impact narrative construction and aesthetic effect. The findings offer valuable insights for linguists, literary scholars, and TESOL educators, enriching our understanding of Twain's enduring legacy as a master of language and storytelling.

Abstract

One of the effects of the existence of Covid-19 was that face-to-face schooling could not be conducted continuously, and so another possible way of learning had to be arranged. The difference between online and face-to-face learning has invited some perceptions and obstacles to the implementation. Thus, this study aimed to describe the parents perception on the benefits and challenges towards the distance learning during the pandemic at school in Aceh, Indonesia. Thisstudy took a case in one junior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh, Indonesia. There were 25 parents taken purposively as the sample. The study used questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The questionnaire and interview guide consisted of 10 questions posted on Google Form. The results found that the implementation of distance learning has led to the benefits and challenges. A number of challenges faced by parents when assisting their children with distance learning included lack of access to technology. Furthermore, parents had lack of knowledge or skills to assist their children with their homework, especially if the subject matter was unfamiliar. The last challenge was time constraints among the parents, making it difficult to find the time to support their children's distance learning. On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has also brought significant gains toward education. The benefits were to minimize the children to be infected by the Covid-19, to engage relationship between the kids and parents, and to encourage parents to use their creativity and digital literacy in implementing the learning material.

Abstract

Gender discrimination in the workplace remains a significant challenge, affecting various aspects of employment, including hiring, promotion, and compensation. Despite advancements in gender equality, women are often treated less favorably than men, irrespective of their qualifications and performance. This issue is pervasive and can be influenced by deeply rooted cultural and religious beliefs that shape attitudes and decisions in professional settings. Women frequently face barriers to leadership roles and receive lower wages compared to their male counterparts. This paper explores the ongoing gender discrimination in workplaces, highlighting its causes and impacts, and proposes actionable strategies to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment for all employees.
