Abstract

This study investigated the use of dicto-comp in minimizing errors in students writing. The study concerned the type of errors frequently made by the students after the implementation of dicto-comp and the effectiveness of dicto-comp in reducing the students errors in writing. The study used the quantitative approach using the quasi-experimental research design. The instrument of the study was writing tests. The study took place at a senior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Findings showed that after the implementation of dicto-comp, the students frequently made grammatical errors at 46.42% and mechanical errors at 40.66%. Further, the t-test results showed that t-test = 2.12 and t-table = 1.70. This indicated that t-test score was higher than t-table, and thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that dicto-comp decreased the errors in the students writing. It is suggested that teachers of English apply dicto-comp technique and/or combine it with another method/ strategy in teaching writing in classroom

Abstract

Some students consider that reading comprehension is still one of the most challenging subjects in English. Others find topics covered while reading English books to be uninteresting. Teachers attempt to address these issues by utilizing a variety of strategies that boost students' reading comprehension abilities. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is one strategy used to help solve these issues. This study investigated the use of CRS in reading comprehension among undergraduate students. The study was carried out at English Language Education Department of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. This study used quantitative research method namely pre-experimental research design in which the class chosen was only one class consisting of 32 students and given the pre-test, teaching presentation, and post-test. The treatment was the CSR as the method during four times meetings in reading comprehension class. The mean score of the pre-test was 62.1 while, the mean score of the post-test was 77.3. The study concluded that the CRS strategy had a postive impact to the students reading comprehension as seen from the increase of test scores. The use of CSR is therefore useful in teaching reading for students at the university level.

In Aceh, English is still taught as foreign language and its teaching practices have experienced a rapid growth in the last decades. This qualitative phenomenological study investigates the complex experiences of TESOL lecturers, examining their perspectives towards this issue, exploring teaching methodologies used, and challenges faced in contemporary language education contexts. Through in-depth semi-structured interviews with five experienced lecturers at English Education Department of UIN Ar-Raniry Aceh, this study explores the multifaceted nature of English language teaching. The study reveals that successful TESOL instruction transcends traditional linguistic pedagogy, requiring sophisticated, adaptive strategies that integrate technological innovations, cultural sensitivity, and personalized learning approaches. Key findings highlight the critical importance of flexible teaching methodologies to empower the students in English communication, technology integration to maintain students’ motivation in English learning, and continuous professional development in addressing the dynamic needs of language learners. Abstract

Reading, similar to other language skills, possesses its own unique techniques and strategies to employ. Every strategy has its distinct purpose and a particular context in which it is applied. Furthermore, it is crucial to employ specific procedures in order to ensure that these techniques are user-friendly. This study specifically focuses on this topic. The objectives of this study are to investigate the reading approaches often employed by students and what strategies they apply in order to increase their reading techniques and abilities. This quantitative study used questionnaire to collect the necessary data, from a sample of 28 second-year students at a private senior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh. The findings showed that scanning and skimming were the most common reading techniques the students used. In addition, in order to sharpen the reading techniques, most of the students tried to enrich reading material and time management as well. Most of them also joined an extra English class in the afternoon outside the class.  They were enthusiastic to sharpen their ability in critical thinking and background knowledge in reading.  This study hopes to add insights into strategies of reading comprehension for other learners of English.

Family and friends had a little influence on them as they were self-motivated. The two most common reading habits that they had were having a reading schedule and making a reading list of their favorite book genres. On the other hand, none of them like to either bring books everywhere or read for others. They believed that reading has a lot of benefits, however, they did not want to force others to love reading.

Abstract

As one of the language skills, reading also has two types of testing, namely subjective and objective testing. Each type of test has several forms. Although teachers must have their own purposes in choosing what type of test should be given to the students, some types of tests look more difficult than others. This is what this study focused on. The aim of this study is to look deeper into what and why some types of tests seem difficult to students, especially to Darul Ihsan students, which consist of 28 students. The result of this study shows that prediction, conclusion, details, and purposes are the most difficult question types. Meanwhile, the main idea, reference, and inference are quite difficult. In addition, the title, synonym, and antonym are not really difficult for them. The reasons behind this were that predictions, conclusions, details, and purposes need much critical thinking and background knowledge. This was what the students faced and surely should be a vital consideration in the teaching and learning process.
