Abstract

This study aims to analyze the B2-level semantic comprehension abilities of Chinese students in the BIPA program. The focus of the study covers three main aspects, namely contextual meaning comprehension, semantic categorization abilities, and mastery of lexical relations such as synonyms, antonyms, hypernyms, and hyponyms. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with structured test instruments (17 questions) and in-depth interviews with participants. The results show that BIPA students at the B2 level are able to understand lexical meaning relations contextually, group words into appropriate semantic categories, and interpret inferential meanings based on clues in the discourse. However, a pattern of errors was also found that mainly originated from interference from the mother tongue (Mandarin) and limited exposure to authentic contextual input. (L1) This reinforces the view that semantic interference from the first language can lead to literal and inaccurate understanding, especially of figurative or idiomatic expressions. (L2) Qualitative data from interviews reinforce the finding that context-based learning strategies and interaction with native speakers play an important role in improving the depth of semantic comprehension. The pedagogical implications of this study emphasize the need to develop more contextual and integrative BIPA teaching materials and strategies in order to reduce semantic interference and support the achievement of higher communicative competence for Mandarin speakers (L1), as also emphasized by Pastini (2025) and Chen (2023) regarding the importance of integrating context and cross-cultural elements in language learning. Abstract

Language acquisition in children with hearing impairment is affected by limited auditory input, which influences their spoken language development. Consequently, deaf children rely more on visual cues, gestures, and situational context in communication. This study aims to describe Indonesian language acquisition in deaf children at SLB Bhina Putera Surakarta by examining four linguistic aspects: phonology, morphology, semantics, and syntax, as well as identifying learning strategies that support communication. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers and supported by relevant literature. Data analysis was conducted by classifying findings based on linguistic aspects and interpreting them descriptively. The results show that language acquisition in deaf children is functional and context-dependent. Phonologically, difficulties in producing certain sounds were observed. Morphologically, children mainly used basic word forms with limited variation. Semantically, meaning comprehension relied on visual experience and context. Syntactically, sentence structures often showed word order reversals and did not fully conform to standard Indonesian grammar, yet remained communicative. Visual-based learning strategies that consider individual characteristics were found to support language development in deaf children.

Abstract

This study examines attitude in ten SBS News articles on issues in the Korean entertainment industry using Martin and White’s Appraisal framework. The analysis focuses on the attitude subsystem realized explicitly (inscribed) through evaluative lexis, while engagement and graduation are treated as supporting resources to explain the source of evaluative voices and the intensification or softening of meaning when relevant. The data are analyzed qualitatively through sentence-level coding, complemented by mapping the frequency and distribution of categories across texts to capture broader tendencies. The findings show that evaluation is most strongly realized through judgement, followed by appreciation and affect. In terms of polarity, the attitudes expressed are predominantly negative, particularly within judgement that centres on the propriety of actors’ actions and behaviour. In addition, evaluation is frequently conveyed through quotations or attribution, allowing evaluative meanings to remain salient while being framed as others’ voices and maintaining an appearance of journalistic caution. Overall, the findings indicate that SBS News coverage of issues in the Korean entertainment industry tends to construct evaluation primarily through social assessment of actors and their actions.

Abstract

Wayang is one of Indonesia's cultural products that has been passed down from generation to generation. Wayang stories, such as the Ramayana epic, are generally performed in the form of wayang kulit (leather puppet theatre) and are popular with the public because they are rich in meaning and moral values. As time has progressed, wayang has not only been presented in the form of performances, but has also been adapted into various media, one of which is comics. This study aims to reveal the representation of the character Rahwana in the Ramayana story adapted into comics and to compare the semiotic approaches in presenting the depth of this character from the perspectives of different comic artists. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis model, which focuses on signs, objects, and interpreters. The data sources are Ramayana adaptation comics from two different comic artists. The results show that each comic artist has a distinctive adaptation style, both visually and conceptually, in describing the character of Rahwana. These differences are evident in the use of symbols, drawing styles, and the highlighting of certain characteristics that form diverse interpretations of the character. Thus, this study confirms that the adaptation process is not neutral but is influenced by the comic artists' creative interpretations. This research is expected to enrich the study of semiotics in visual arts and literature, particularly in the context of modern wayang.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of using Spotify podcasts based on the RICOSRE model to improve students’ final report writing skills through a one-group pretest–posttest experimental design involving 89 students. The learning framework followed the RICOSRE stages (Reading, Identifying, Constructing, Solving, Reviewing, Extending) and used the podcast episode “Is AI Making Us Stupid” as authentic input. Data were collected  pre- and post-writing tests, documentation of instructional implementation, and student feedback; analyses included assumption testing, reliability and normality checks, and inferential tests (paired t-test and ANOVA) conducted with SPSS 23. The paired test showed a significant difference between scores before and after the intervention (mean difference ≈ -19.84; t = -19.624; p < .01), with a 95% confidence interval that did not cross zero, indicating a consistent change after the intervention. However, between-group ANOVA did not reach significance (F = 1.872; p = .065), indicating variation in effects across participant subgroups. Findings suggest  podcast-based instruction structured by RICOSRE can effectively improve overall writing ability, but subgroup-specific effectiveness requires further investigation. Methodologically, integrating authentic audio input with staged cognitive scaffolding offers a replicable intervention framework. Practical recommendations include integrating rubrics and regular feedback, training students to use podcasts as data sources.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms and functions of commissive speech acts in political discourse found in live broadcast videos of the Red and White Cabinet Meeting uploaded on YouTube. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research focuses on utterances containing commissive speech acts delivered by meeting participants during the sessions. Data collection was conducted through observation and note-taking, while data analysis applied Charles Morris’s pragmalinguistic model, including data collection, categorization, analysis, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal 20 instances of commissive speech acts, consisting of promises (45%), intentions (25%), offers (10%), and guarantees (20%). Promises and intentions are the most dominant, functioning to provide certainty, demonstrate commitment, reassure, and build public trust. Offer speech acts are used to propose policies, whereas guarantees aim to convince interlocutors and the public about the continuity of government programs. These findings indicate that commissive speech acts play a strategic role in political communication to strengthen legitimacy, commitment, and trust. The study further suggests that the use of commissive speech acts in digital spaces serves as an instrument for public accountability.

Abstract

The humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Palestine has sparked a wide range of diplomatic reactions from world leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Communicating information related to this sensitive issue requires careful word choice, which is closely linked to the use of euphemisms as a linguistic strategy. This study was conducted to identify the forms of euphemism and their functions present in Olaf Scholz’s speech regarding the Palestinian tragedy. This is a qualitative descriptive study, with data consisting of the text of Olaf Scholz’s speech on the Bundesregierung website. Data analysis in this study employs Schröder’s theory of euphemism. The results of this study indicate that Olaf Scholz’s speech contains forms of euphemism, including metaphors, ambiguous expressions (vague or ambiguous phrases), omissions (omissions/zero euphemisms), generalizations, litotes, and stylistic incongruence. Furthermore, these forms of euphemism serve to obscure (verschleiernd) and conceal (verhüllend). However, in Olaf Scholz’s speech, the dominant function is the obscuring function (verschleiernd). This function is employed as a form of consideration for the speaker in selecting neutral language.
