Abstract

The purpose of this research was to identify the effectiveness of jigsaw strategy on students' speaking ability in expressing gratitude and appreciation. This study employed a quantitative research design and involved two groups of students: the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group was taught using the Jigsaw Strategy, while the control group received instruction without jigsaw strategy. The population of the research consisted of 60 students from the second grade of SMP Singosari Delitua, and a purposive sample technique was applied where 30 students was selected as control group and another 30 students were selected as experimental group. Speaking tests, including pre-tests and post-tests, were used to collect the data for both groups. In the control group, the mean deviation was 8.87, indicating a low level of improvement. This group was taught without the Jigsaw Strategy. On the other hand, the experimental group taught using the Jigsaw Strategy, had a mean deviation of 23.03, showing a higher level of improvement. As a result, it was concluded that the Jigsaw Strategy had a significant impact on students' speaking achievement in expressing gratitude and appreciation. Based on the information provided, this research can be considered an effective approach to the teaching and learning process. Keywords: Speaking, Appreciation, Gratitude, Jigsaw Strategy

Abstract

This research explored the translation of the Urdu poem "Jawab-e-Shikwa" by Muhammad Iqbal into English, focusing on two versions by Altaf Hussain and Frances W. Pritchett. The study employed the Vinay and Darbelnet model to analyze translation strategies such as equivalence, modulation, and oblique translation. The analysis revealed differences in linguistic accuracy, cultural relevance, and literary style between the two translations. Through a qualitative and quantitative approach, the study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of translation on the interpretation of "Jawab-e-Shikwa" in both Urdu and English-speaking contexts. From the Result of the analysis it was found that Hussain employed an oblique translation approach with techniques such as equivalence and modulation, capturing the essence of the original poem with a sense-for-sense translation. Pritchett, on the other hand, adopted a direct translation strategy, offering a word-for-word rendition that maintains clarity but may lack the nuanced impact of the Urdu original. Both translations effectively conveyed the overall meaning of the poem, Hussain's version demonstrated a greater adherence to the cultural and literary nuances of the original Urdu, providing a more intricate and contextually rich interpretation. Pritchett's literal approach, while clear and accurate, may compromise the poetic and cultural depth inherent in Iqbal's work. Abstract

This research paper aims to study Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model for a critical discourse analysis of John Donne's poem "Go and Catch a Falling Star." Rooted in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and building upon Fairclough's critique of Critical Linguistics, the study explores the hidden ideologies and societal attitudes embedded in the text. The poem, published in 1633, presents a satirical examination of women's perceived infidelity, and Fairclough's model serves as a tool to unravel the complexities of its linguistic features, discursive practices, and socio-cultural implications. The analysis reveals anti-feministic undertones within the broader context, where societal norms and power dynamics played a crucial role in shaping discourse. By examining the poem through the three dimensions of Fairclough's model—text, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice—the research contributes to a deep understanding of how language choices perpetuate certain perceptions of women and contribute to broader societal narratives during this historical period. Abstract

This study examined Allama Iqbal’s poem “Kabhi Ae Haqeeqat-e-Muntazir” through Eugene Nida’s dynamic equivalence model, evaluating Dr. Mustansir Mir’s English translation against the original Urdu text. The analysis revealed a nuanced interplay between literal meaning and metaphorical expression, highlighting challenges in conveying cultural nuances. The Findings indicated that Mir’s translation adeptly preserves the essence of Iqbal’s profound themes—encompassing the quest for truth, the transcendent power of music, the soul’s significance, sacrifice, peace, and sincerity in prayer. By navigating linguistic complexities and cultural barriers, the translation succeeds in ensuring accessibility and cultural resonance for a wider audience, affirming Nida’s principles in maintaining fidelity to the original while adapting it to a different linguistic and cultural milieu. Abstract

This study employed poly-systemic approach to Urdu-English translated version of the seminal text “Salome” where the researcher tried to find out the peri-textual feature in both the versions while comparing them. Furthermore. This study aimed  to explore the cultural influence on language spoken within a specific area. The method used in this study was descriptive-qualitative in nature. It used two different versions of the same text. The textual analysis established, while taking into consideration the initial, preliminary and operational norms (taken from the peritexts), that majority of the translators and translation critics aligned with the target-oriented or acceptability paradigm and reflected as well as conformed to the secondary position of translation in literary (poly) systems of Pakistan. However, the study found that found that people usually share their culture with other while using language. Moreover, the two versions have specific terminologies representing same ideologies or concepts but they have different sentence constructions. The study was significant as it not only offers contextual information about the process of translation provided by the translators and critics but also because of being first of its kind in Pakistan.
