Abstract

The problem addressed in this study is the apparent conflict between the word תִּֿרְצָֽח (trəṣāḥ, “to murder”) in Deuteronomy 5:17 and the term חָרַם (ḥāram, “to utterly destroy”) in Deuteronomy 7:2. This tension constitutes the primary research question of this study: do these two terms contradict one another, thereby resulting in dehumanization? The objective of this paper is to examine the discourse between trəṣāḥ and ḥāram. The theoretical framework employed is ideology of the Deuteronomistic redactor, which emphasizes the promotion of humanity through the Torah's legal traditions. The study applies redaction criticism and morphological analysis as its methodological approach. The findings indicate that the two terms do not contradict one another, as they stem from different redactional origins, contexts, and morphological structures.

Abstract

This study analyzes the controversial phrase “divine offspring” (זֶרַע אֱלֹהִים, zeraʿ ʾĕlōhîm) in Malachi 2:15. Contrary to the common interpretation that only understands it as the biological procreation of children, this study argues that “divine offspring” is the telos (theological ultimate goal) of the marriage covenant itself. Using exegetical methods that focus on the lexical-syntactic analysis and the literary-historical context of Malachi 2:13-16, this article shows that divorce and infidelity are not only seen as violations of the social contract, but as acts that fundamentally sabotage God’s purpose of creating a godly and faithful covenant community. Divorce, for Malachi, is violence (חָמָס, ḥāmās) that destroys the foundation on which the “divine seed”—the generation living in obedience to Yahweh—can be raised. Thus, as will be shown, the stability of faithful monogamous marriage is not an end in itself, but rather an essential prerequisite for the fulfillment of the larger divine mandate for the post-exilic people.

Abstract

The development of modern management requires the church to renew its management practices. There are pros and cons regarding whether the church can adopt modern management models that are considered profit-oriented. Nevertheless, this writing aims to present management that is not only centered on church officials but also on the management functions outlined in the Bible to be understood and applied in today's church. The research method used is literature study utilizing historical-biblical analysis by examining literature sources from various online articles. The results of the study find that the management functions outlined in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament, such as administrative function, governance function, and servanthood function, still need to be reinterpreted and applied by all members of the body of Christ serving in the church, especially church officials.

Abstract

In the realm of social media, hate speech based on religion is a possible and concerning phenomenon. Such hate speech causes unrest among individuals or groups who feel victimized. Several theologians have responded to the issue of hate speech from the perspective of Christian Religious Education and ecclesiastical encyclicals. However, so far, no one has addressed it from a biblical perspective. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine Luke 6:27–36 to understand how Christians should respond to hate speech. To interpret Luke 6:27–36, the author employs a socio-redactional analysis. The results of this study indicate that Luke 6:27-36 contains a message that hate speech should not be responded to with hate speech, but with love that is manifested in good deeds, blessings, prayers, being generous, and acting as Christians want to others to do to Christians. Thus, the theological message of Luke 6:27-30 can be a theological reflection that can be applied by Christians today in responding to the rise of hate speech on the basis of religion in Indonesia thourgh social media.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has accelerated and expanded the spread of misinformation and disinformation, affecting various aspects of life, including political, social, and religious spheres. This study analyzes the prophetic critique in Jeremiah 23:9–40 against false prophets and explores its implications for addressing contemporary challenges of disinformation. Employing a qualitative method with a literature-based approach, the research seeks to identify parallels between the misleading practices of false prophets in Jeremiah’s time and modern figures who disseminate false information for personal or group interests. The findings indicate that false prophets in the era of Jeremiah manipulated religious teachings for personal and political gain, a pattern comparable to contemporary influencers or public figures who spread disinformation for ideological purposes or financial benefit, either directly or through social media. These findings underscore the importance of theological literacy, critical awareness, and ethical leadership in resisting the erosion of truth within the open digital public sphere. This study further contributes to ongoing discussions on the role of biblical principles in guiding faith communities to engage with and respond to disinformation in the digital age in a wise and responsible manner.

Abstract

This study aims to affirm digital preaching as a theological mandate of the church in the digital era, rooted in the Great Commission and the Missio Dei. The research is motivated by a gap in previous studies that primarily focused on the technical and communicative aspects of digital ministry, without adequately framing them within the church’s theological responsibility. Employing a descriptive qualitative method through a literature-based approach in practical theology and digital media, this study finds that digital preaching plays a strategic role in strengthening the faith of believers, preserving doctrinal purity, and expanding the church’s mission in a contextual manner within online spaces. The findings reveal that social media is not merely a technological adaptation tool, but a new missional arena where the church can embody God’s truth and love in relevant ways for the digital generation. Practically, the study recommends that churches develop sustainable digital ministry strategies that balance theological depth with communicative effectiveness. Hence, digital preaching is understood not only as a medium of spiritual communication but also as a missional and contextual practice of practical theology for the church today and in the future.

Abstract

The cyborg and posthumanism era poses significant challenges to human understanding of identity, morality, and spirituality due to the dominance of science and technology. This article examines the concept of lex cybernetica from a Christian ethical perspective, emphasizing the ethical boundaries that believers must observe in engaging with technological advancement. Through theological and ethical approaches, this study highlights the moral issues arising from innovations such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and virtual reality, in order to help individuals remain grounded in Christian values. Employing a qualitative methodology that includes case studies, literature review, and theological descriptive analysis, the findings discuss cyborgs and posthumanism, human–technology integration, and theological reflections on humans as co-creators, ideal creations, and the relationship between soteriology and eschatology within the context of technological development.

Abstract

The church is a place of worship for Christians, both past and present. The development of science and technology, especially in worship and church administration, has certainly made everything more flexible and dynamic. The development of the congregation's faith is reviewed from science and technology studies which focus on developments in science and technology in the implementation of church stewardship as well as reflections and responses through interviews with the GKI Soka Salatiga congregation. This research aims to see the development of faith in the congregation through individual reflective statements about worship interspersed with technology from the perspectives of youth, parents, church council and the elderly. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with two approaches, both the latest literature and interviews so that the data obtained and analysis through the literature data can find meaning and answer one main question in this research, namely what about reflection. The faith of the congregation sees the development of science and technology in the church, especially at GKI SOKA.

Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed many aspects of human life, including religion. This study aims to examine the impact of AI on religion and to identify the limits of AI’s influence on human life. Using a qualitative library research method, this study analyzes relevant literature on artificial intelligence, digital technology, and religion through content analysis and a comparative approach. The findings indicate that AI possesses advanced cognitive and technical capabilities and can surpass human performance in various intellectual tasks. However, AI lacks faith, moral awareness, and spiritual experience. Therefore, AI cannot replace the essence of religion, which is rooted in the human relationship with the Transcendent and the search for meaning beyond empirical reality. This study concludes that religion remains essential as a moral foundation and a source of meaning in the technological era.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relevance of female leadership in the contemporary church through a critical reflection on the figure of Esther using a narrative-feminist hermeneutical approach. Contemporary challenges such as gender inequality within church structures, leadership stagnation, and the need for a contextual leadership model drive this research to address the existing research gap studies on Esther have predominantly focused on the aspect of divine providence, not yet on a strategic and transformative female leadership model for the modern church, particularly in the Indonesian context. This research employs a qualitative approach with a literature review method, integrating the analysis of the Book of Esther through the lens of narrative-feminist hermeneutics with contemporary leadership theories (transformational, servant leadership, and feminist leadership theory). The results indicate that Esther's leadership offers a resilient, contextual, and solidarity-based model a leadership paradigm that works within the system while transforming it from within, emphasizing strategic agency, collaboration, and contextual courage. The contribution of this study lies in its hermeneutical enrichment, which opens space for the empowerment of female church leadership through theological legitimacy from the Old Testament narrative. Thus, the contemporary church needs to reflect on Esther's leadership model to face challenges more effectively and inclusively.
