Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the function of semantic vocabulary tools and fishing techniques in fisherman communities in the area of Boulevard Manado. This research uses qualitative descriptive method and uses lexical semantic study approach to analyze semantic function of vocabulary tool and fishing technique in fisherman communities. This research was conducted along the coastal area of Boulevard, Sario Sub-district, Manado City, North Sulawesi. Sources of data in this study were taken from those who work as fishermen, who know about the vocabulary tools and fishing techniques.The data collection techniques are direct observation techniques and interviews. The data collection tool was the researcher as a key instrument. Based on the results of data analysis research found in fishing gear and techniques in Bolevard Manado area, there are 30 vocabulary in fishing gear, and 14 vocabulary in fishing technique in the form of these results collected in this study. The researcher hopes for this research continued on the vocabulary of fisherman fishing tools and techniques in the Bolevard Manado area, from different perspectives, so that further research can complement the study of semantics, especially lexical semantics with other problems.                                              Keywords: Function of Semantic, vocabulary tools, fishing techniques ,Fisherman communities.

Abstract

This research will identify, classify, and analyze based on the phenomena of words formation. The data has been collected from some interviews of the motorcycle community members. Theories used in this research by Sampurno and Finoza.The results of this research shows that the acronym used exclusively in the motorcycle community. According to the form of an acronym, there are four forms, namely: form initial characters of the word, syllable form, form initial character of the word and syllable, phrases form. And to the function in this research that acronym as a shorthand phrase or name, slogan or humor, distinguishing origin of a words and meaning.Keywords: acronym, form, function, community

Abstract

This article discusses the use of linguistic signs in milk advertisements, focusing on how these signs are constructed and perceived by the audience. Linguistic signs in advertisements serve not only as a communication tool but also as a means of persuasion that can build specific images and meanings related to the advertised milk products. The analysis is conducted using the semiotic theories of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes, which explain how signs in advertisements—both textual and visual—convey denotative and connotative meanings. Through a semiotic approach, this article outlines how the visual and verbal elements in milk advertisements are constructed to influence consumer perceptions and attitudes toward the product. The findings indicate that milk advertisements utilize linguistic signs to create associations with health, nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle, which indirectly influence consumers' purchasing decisions. Abstract

This research, entitled “The Use of Metaphors in Album Poems, Prayers and Promises by John Denver” aims to identify, classify, and analysis the metaphorical expressions embedded in the lyrics. Guided by Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) conceptual metaphor theory—structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors—the research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, using twelve songs from the album as primary data. The findings reveal a consistent and meaningful application of metaphorical language that transforms abstract ideas including time, memory, and emotion into more tangible concepts, enhancing lyrical depth and emotional resonance. The study concludes that metaphor in Denver’s songwriting is not merely decorative but serves as a cognitive tool that shapes understanding and strengthens the connection between artistic expression and human experience, thereby contributing to broader discussions in semantic and cognitive linguistic research.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the romance formula in Judith McNaught’s Remember When by applying Cawelti’s (1976) theory of plot structure and Radway’s (1984) theory of ideal romance. The objectives are to identify the romance formula presented in the novel and to examine how the plot constructs this formula. A descriptive qualitative method is employed, with data collected through intensive reading and note-taking and analyzed by categorizing story elements according to Radway’s thirteen stages of the ideal romance narrative and Cawelti’s four structural elements of plot, followed by an interpretation of their contributions. The results reveal that the romance formula in Remember When consistently aligns with Radway’s thirteen ideal stages, with the most dominant stage being element twelve, in which the female character responds both sexually and emotionally. The plot structure effectively develops and reinforces this formula through sequential conflicts and resolutions. This research contributes to literary studies, particularly in the analysis of popular romance narratives, and serves as a reference for future narrative research. Abstract

This research aims to identify, classify, and describe the forms of phonemes in English and Bungku language using Roach’s (2009) theory and analyze the differences and similarities of phonemes in English and Bungku language by using Fisiak’s (2009) theory. This research used qualitative descriptive method. The English data were collected from Swadesh vocabularies and the data of Bungku language were taken from three native speakers through interview. The results of this research shows that there are 22 consonant forms and 12 vowel forms in English. In Bungku language, there are 17 consonant forms and 5 vowel forms. The differences and similarities found in amounts of phonemes in English and Bungku language. English has 8 consonants /v/, /z/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʧ/, /w/, /ɹ/ and and 9 vowels; /ɪ/, /ʊ/, /ə/, /ɜ/, /ɔ:/, /æ/, /ʌ/, /ɑ:/, /ɒ/ which are not found Bungku language, while Bungku language have 3 consonant forms /?/, /dʒ/, /r/ and 1 vowel /a/ found only in Bungku language. The similarities of English and Bungku language show 15 consonants; /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/, /f/, /s/, /h/, /w/, /n/, /m/, /ŋ/, /j/, /l/ and 3 vowels; /e/, /i/, /u/ are in similar.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikas, mengklasifikasikan, dan mendeskripsikan bentuk, distribusi, dan sistem fonotaktik fonem dalam bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Gorontalo. Studi ini juga menganalisis kesamaan dan perbedaan antara system fonemik kedua bahasa tersebut menggunakan pendekatan analisis kontrastif. Metode deskriptif kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Data bahasa Inggris diperoleh dari daftar kosakata Swadesh, sedangkan data bahasa Gorontalo dikumpulkan dari lima penutur asli. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahasa Inggris memiliki tiga belas fonem vokal, yaitu /i/, /ɪ/, /e/, /ɛ/, /æ/, /a/, /ɔ/, /o/, /ʊ/, /u/, /ə/, /ʌ/, dan /ɝ/, serta dua puluh empat fonem konsonan, yaitu /p/, /b/, /m/, /f/, /v/, /t/, /d/, /n/, /r/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /l/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /j/, /k/, /ɡ/, /ŋ/, /w/, dan /h/. Sementara itu, bahasa Gorontalo memiliki lima fonem vokal, yaitu /a/, /i/, /e/, /u/, dan /o/, serta sembilan belas fonem konsonan, yaitu /p/, /t/, /g/, /h/, /n/, /r/, /y/, /j/, /ɲ/, /b/, /d/, /k/, /s/, /m/, /l/, /w/, /c/, /ŋ/, dan /ʔ/. Distribusi fonem dalam kedua bahasa dianalisis berdasarkan kemunculannya pada posisi awal, tengah, dan akhir kata. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kedua bahasa memiliki kesamaan fonem vokal a/, /e/, /i/, /u/, dan /o/, serta dalam fonem konsonan /p/, /b/, /m/, /t/, /d/, /n/, /r/, /s/, /l/, /j/, /k/, /g/, /ŋ/, /w/, dan /h/. Berdasarkan analisis pola fonotaktik, bahasa Inggris memiliki dua belas sistem pola fonotaktik, sedangkan bahasa Gorontalo memiliki tiga sistem

Abstract

This research is entitled “Denotative and Connotative Meanings in the Script of the Film The Menu by Mark Mylod (Semantic Analysis)”. This research examines the denotative and connotative meanings found in the script of the film The Menu by Mark Mylod. The aim of this research is to identify, classify and analyze the meaning of denotation and connotation found in the movie script The Menu by Mark Mylod. The theory used in this research was the theory of Geoffrey Leech (1981). The writer used a qualitative descriptive method to collect data in this research. The writer identified and classified words, phrases and sentences then analyzed the meaning of denotation and connotation. The study finds, there are 33 data, consist of 20(words), 10(phrase) and 3(sentences), which contains denotative and connotative meaning. The connotative meaning contained in the movie script for The Menu by Mark Mylod has an important meaning and message for readers or viewers. The writer finds that the meaning of denotation and connotation is not only found in scripts or films but can also be found in everyday life and in relation to each other.
