Abstract

This article explores the educational theater adaptation of the film Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal by students of the Sendratasik Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. Using a qualitative-descriptive method, the study analyzes how this adaptation communicates cultural identity and educational values to a student audience. The theatrical adaptation, developed as a final project for the "Teater Pendidikan course," highlights local wisdom, multiculturalism, and character education. By examining the process and performance during the implementation of Phase D in the course, this paper illustrates how educational theater serves as a medium of learning, value transformation, and identity reinforcement in performing arts education.

Abstract

This research stems from the issue in several elementary schools that have not yet provided space for students to express and develop their creativity, particularly in dance education. Dance learning activities are often conducted separately and are not integrated with other forms of art, even though one of the main goals of basic education is to foster students' creativity. Creativity is defined as the ability to generate new, imaginative, and useful ideas. To address this challenge, the study proposes an educational dance approach based on free expression in learning activities. This approach encourages students to express themselves freely without fear of making mistakes, resulting in original and natural expressions. The aim of this study is to explore how the implementation of a free-expression approach in dance education can foster the growth of students' creativity. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that this approach can develop students’ creativity through several aspects: 1) the creative potential of elementary students before the implementation of dance learning, 2) the planning of materials, indicators, objectives, and learning steps, 3) the implementation of the learning process using a free-expression approach to enhance creativity, and 4) the evaluation conducted during the learning process.

Abstract

Tari Digul is an early creative dance that has developed in Tonjong District, Brebes Regency, since the early days of Indonesia’s independence. One of the art groups that continues to preserve this dance is the Forum Pemuda Pemudi Kartika Kesenian Digul Tonjong, located in Tonjong Village. The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the movement structure of Tari Digul in Tonjong Village, Tonjong District, Brebes Regency. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a choreographic structural approach. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data validity is ensured through source triangulation, technique triangulation, and time triangulation. The data analysis techniques used are the structural analysis methods of Anya Peterson Royce and Sumaryono, further elaborated with Janed Adshead’s dance analysis techniques. The findings of this study reveal that the movement structure of Tari Digul refers to elements of dance movement, namely movement motifs, movement phrases, movement sentences, and the largest unit, movement clusters. It also considers the relationships between basic dance elements, body parts involved, movement types, and movement qualities or character. Tari Digul consists of 12 movement sentences, 12 phrases, and 66 movement motifs that are interconnected, forming a unified whole dance composition. Based on this, Tari Digul clearly exhibits a hierarchical relationship between its movement elements, which includes syntagmatic, paradigmatic, and overlapping relationships
