Abstract

Abstract

A polymerase chain reaction was developed to detect the proviral DNA of bovine leukimia virus in bovine lymphocytes. Milk and blood samples from infected and uninfected cows were tested. None of the bovine leukosis free animals gave a positive response and 58% of the infected cows showed positive signals. When the DNAs 25ul of blood. 25.000 lymphocytes or 1.000 lymphocytes were amplified. positive results were recorded more frequently in cows with persistent  lymphocytes than in cows with normal  lymphocyte counts.

Abstract

Among 78 native chicken from Bogor and its surrounding districts, only  4 (5.1%) with mean dressing weights of 1250 ± 29 g were free from parasiric worms. The other 74 chicken found infected with nematodes [mean nematode numbers (mn) = 24]. Cestodes (mc = 45) and trematodes (mt = 7). Single parasite class infections of nematode (mn = 18) and of trematode (mt = 96) were each one sample (1.3% with mws 1250 and 1180 g, respectively); single parasite class infections of cestode (mc = 47) were 15 (19.2% wit mw = 1145 g). Total single parasite class infections were 17 (21.8%). Mixed nermatode (mn = 29) + castode (mc = 50) were 41 (52,6%; mw = 1056 g), nematode (mn = 4) + trematode (mt = 28) were 2 (2.6% mw = 1225 g) and cestode (mc = 44) + trematode (mt = 6 - were 2 (2,6%; ws = 975 g). Total two parasite class infections were 45 (57.7%). Mixed infections of nematode (mn - 45) + cestode (mc = 44) + trematode (mt = 27) were 12 (15,4%; mw = 1034 g).

Abstract

Ninety seven faecal samples from lactating and nonlactating dairy cows in Bandung and Garut, West Java, were collected and examined for gasterointestinal worm eggs, in the period from August 1988 untill March 1989. At the same time of faecal collection, the daily milk production of the cows were recorded, only 5 cows (5,15%) were clean from worm eggs while the other 92 (94.85%) were found infected with one, two or three parasitic helminht classes. Three samples (3,09%) were harbouring single nematode class infections, another 3 samples (3,09%) with single cestode class infections, 23 (23,71%) single trematode class infections. Hence 29 samples (29.90%) were infected with single class helminth parasites. Two samples (2.06% ) were harbouring mixed nematode and cestode infections, 17 (17.53%) with mixed nematode and trematode and 30 (30.93%) mxed cestode and trematode infections to make up 61 samples (62.89%) harbouring two helminth class infections. Fourteen cows (14.43%) harboured mixed infections of nematode, cestode and trematode.

Abstract

The available of livestock has had profound influences on the growth of civilization. Systematic animal breeding, increasing control over animal diseases., advanced study on nutrition, improvement in food processing, storage and transportation have been great advantages in livestock raising and the use of animal products. In the world as a whole the need for food has grown faster than the supply of deomestic animals. This is a challenge for the veterinary profession. Veterinary science is the science dealing with the prevention control and treatment of domestic animal disesases. There are 5 Faculties of Veterinary Medicine in Indonesia. The number of Indonesian veterinarian is now about 2.000. In dealing with the improvement of livestock production, veterinarians are working closely together with the animal husbandry graduates, a profession produced by the “Facylty of Animal Husbandry” since the late sixties.

Abstract

Passively transfered rabbit antiserum provided some protection to Balb/c mice against challanged with viable virulent goat (XI003) strain of Pseudomonas pseudomallei. This protection was demonstrated in mice injected with 1:10 and 1:20 dilutions of antiserum. A. complete protection was conferred to the mice injected with 1:20 dillution and wich then were challanged with log10 3,5 and log10 4,5 viable cells of homologous strain. In contrast, the undiluted antiserum (neat) did not give any protection in mice. Nevertheless, these findings showed that antibody plays a role in immunity to P. pseudomallei

Abstract

Clinical signs indicated that Swollen Head Syndrome (SHS) was suspected to be present in Indonesia. Serological investigation was carried out by collecting a number of 242 serum samples from Tangerang, Bogor, Cianjurm Ciawi, Cicurug dan Magelang, tested using serum neutralization (SN) test. The results of SN test indicated that SHS has been identified in these investigation areas. Based on the fact that these are the center for parent stock breeders it could be suspected taht the disease might have been speread to several areas of chicken farms in this country. It would be wise if a control program be formulated since this time, to ensure that everything is well prepared in case SHS situation develops into unfavorable condition.

Abstract

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) for progesterone plasma of various animal species had been applied and validated in our laboratory. The method used antisera against 11 alpha hydroxy progesterone raised in goats (donated by Dr. L.E Edqvist, Sweden) in a 1:2000 dilution. A sensitivity of 10 pg/ml was obtained based on the readings for this concentration which was statistically different from a zeroconcentration (p

Abstract

The experiment was conducted to study the effect of Urea Molasses Block (UMB) supplementation on the performance, the blood ammonia and glucose of sheep. Twelve male sheep on average one year old were used as experimental animals. Thehy were randomly divided into four groups. Hence, each group consisted of three animals. The four treatments applied were PO : control group fed on grass only, P1 : grass supplemented with UMB cantaining 3.6% of urea, P2 : grass supplemented with UMB cantaining 4.8% of urea, P3: grass suplemented with UMB containing 7.2% of urea. The treatments were arranged over the sheep according to Complete Randomized Design with 3 replicates. The results of the experiment showed that UMB supplementation influenced (P < 0.05) the live weight gain, geed consumption and conversion, retention of nitrogen, blood ammonia and glucose of sheep. It was concluded that UMB supplementation did not adversely affect the animal's health and yielded blood ammonia and glucose values in a normal range. With regard to the performance of the sheep, the P3 group fed on grass supplemented with UMB containing 7.2% of urea showed the highest performance.
