Abstract

Oil palm {Elaeis guineentis Jacq) represents file most im|iorfant commodity in plantation sector. The problems often faced in oil palm agriculture effort is the availability of quality seed and avaOability ofpotential and fertile soil. Peat soil has some weaknesses such as its acidity (pH) and slow decompositionprocess. One method to overcome the acidity of peat soil is by using dregs and decomposition process can beimproved by applying Trichoderma sp. The objective of this research was to know the influence of interactionand primary factor of Trichoderma sp and dregs application for oil palm seed growth and physiologicalcondition at peat medium In pre nursery. It was conducted from September 2006 to Febrvari 2007. Theparameters of this research were the height of seed, leaf amount, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, and shoot-root ratio. The treatment of Trichoderma sp of 25 g/ kg of peat with dregs of 30 g/kg of peat had significanteRect to height of seed, and shoot wet weight. The primary factor tttdregs had significant effect to height ofseed and at dregs dose of 20 g/kg of peat, white leaf amount and shoot-root ratio at dregs dose of 30 g/kg of pea t.The primary factor of Trichoderma sp did not have any significant effect for all parameters.

Abstract

Edible coating application serves to replace a layer of natural waxes lost due to post harvest handling. Thisstudy aims to determine the effect of concentration of carrageenan in edible coating solution of aloe vera on thequality of guava fruit during storage. This study used a completely randomized design, which consists of fivetreatments and three replications. The treatments were K0 (without addition of carrageenan), K1 (addition ofcarrageenan 0.1%), K2 (addition of carrageenan 0.2%), K3 (addition of carrageenan 0.3%), and K4 (addition ofcarrageenan 0.4%). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Duncan’s New Multiple RangeTest at 5% level. The results showed that the addition of various concentrations of carrageenan in aloe veraedible coating applied to guava fruit significantly affected the weight loss, hardness, total dissolved solids, vitamin C, and skin colour of guava fruit, but did not significantly affect the colour of flesh and flavour of guavafruit in hedonic assessment. The best treatment for maintaining the quality of guava fruit during storage was thetreatment K4 with the addition 0.4% carrageenan. The treatment K4 had weight loss 7.30%, hardness 6.11 kg/f,total soluble solids 3.39obrix, and vitamin C 173.70 mg/100 g. Hedonic sensory assessment of the skin colour ofguava fruit had value 2.19 (like), colour of guava fruit flesh had value 2.01 (like), and flavour of guava fruit hadvalue 2.10 (like).

Abstract

Medium Chain Triglyceride or Medium Chain Triacylglycerol (MCT) is triglyceride (triacylglycerol) thatcontains medium chain fatty acids C6:0 - C12:0, therefore is also known as Medium Chain Fatty Acid(MCFA). The type and amount MCFA of an oil are affected by the source, technique, and conditions toextract the oil. MCFA increasingly play important roles in terms of food processing technology, pharmacology, and clinical nutrition. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the profile ofMCFA and chemical properties of coconut oil (VCO, simplah oil, pliek u oil, klentik oil, oil from copra) andpalm oil. The observed parameters were the type and amount of fatty acids, moisture content, free fatty acid, peroxide and iodine number. The results showed that the MCFA profiles of various coconut oil is almostsimilar, although the manufacturing process is different, however the profiles different from that of palm oilwhich the MCFA were not undetected. Coconut oil (VCO, simplah oil, pliek u oil, and klentik oil) containfatty acids of C6:0-C18:1, and klentik oil also contains C18: 2. From all types of the coconut oils used, thetotal content of MCFA (C6 + C8) ranged from 9.89-10.99%, fatty acids C6 + C8 + C10 were 17.94-20.21%,and total content of MCFA (C6 + C8 + C10 + C12) ranged between 54.91 in pliek u oil and the highest61.68% in the VCO. All types of coconut oil used in this study have met the SNI (01-2904-1992) and for palmoil, SNI (01-2901-1992). The best quality of oils obtained from the VCO V1 with levels of water 0.20%, freefatty acid (FFA) 0.22%, iodine number of 8.17%, and peroxide number of 0.96 mg O2 / g sample.Key words: MCT or MCFA, coconut oil, VCO, simplah oil, pliek u oil, klentik oil, copra oil, palm oil

Abstract

For cultivation of melon (Cucumis melo L.), farmers only keep one fruit per plant to maintain quality fruit. To improve productivity, one possible effort is by spraying gibberellins at melon in combination with increasing amount of fruit maintained for each plant. The aim of this study was to know the effect of gibbereline in improving sink capacities of melon when fruit amount is increased. Gibberelins was sprayed at concentration of 0, 30, 60, and 90 mg/l to melon crop with different fruit amount per plant (one, two and three fruit). The study indicated that for melon plant with more than one fruit per plant, gibberellins application was not able to maintain the fruit quality, because the fruit weights were still decreasing. Thus, gibberellins application was not able to improve the sink capacities if fruit amount per plant is increased. While for plant with only one fruit, spraying 60 and 90 mg/l gibberellins can improve the fruit weight, so gibberellins improves the sink capacities if only one fruit is maintained for each plant.
