Teaching English as a Foreign Language Overseas Journal (TEFLO) is a Journal of English Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja (p-ISSN:2461-0240) is a scientific journal published third a year in April, August and December. It was established on 25th September 2016 for printing. TEFLO publishes articles as the results of research and scientific work either empirical or conceptual. This journal focuses on both research and conceptual articles done by any English teacher or lecturer within Indonesia or overseas countries. It allows any writer to submit up to 8-12 pages or equivalent with 2500 to 4000 words in range. It applies APA style in all articles submitted to this journal. While the scopes include English Language Teaching (ELT) in EFL or ESL context, English applied linguistics (EAL) in any form: empirical or conceptual. TEFLO focuses on and welcomes researchers in both EFL and ESL contexts to publish professional or conceptual articles, and research articles formed in a qualitative and quantitative study in the area of the following scopes: Analysis of English pieces of literature in the English Education Context Discourse Analysis in the English Education context ELT Material Development English Applied linguistics English for Specific Purposes English Language Testing and Evaluation Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Anthropolinguistic Tourism and Local Wisdom issues

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the kinds of material adaptation that have done by the teacher of senior and vocational high school inToraja Utara in teaching English. The researcher employed the descriptive qualitative method with interview and documentation to obtain the data. The population of this research are the English teachers of Senior High School and Vocational High School in Rantepao District which is consists of thirty two (32) the English teacher. Since the population of the research is relative large in number, the researcher used purposive sampling method, which means that not all of the population were taken as respondents. The researcher choose 8 the English teacher as subject. The data obtained from interview, syllabus, lesson plan and textbooks. The researcher analyzed the data by using the Miles and Huberman technique.The result of the data analysis to showed that the kinds of material adaptation that have done by the teacher of senior and vocational high school inToraja Utara in teaching English, are adding content, addressing ommisions, modifying content, extending tasks and modifying tasks. Thus, by six kinds of adaptation only one that never used by the teacher that is reorganize content.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out what factors cause the anxiety in speaking English by the Second Semester Students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research with survey design. The researcher used interview as the way to get the data. The subject of this research was the Second Semester Students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. The researcher used semi structure interview which consist of 10 questions. The data were analyzed by three steps, they are data reduction data display, and conclusion. The result of this research showed that mostly factors which caused the students anxiety in speaking English was difficult to adjust their accent with the British and American accents. And followed by less of self-confidence, and the other factors was listener understanding, pronunciation, and friends reaction. In this research, the researcher can concluded that British and American accent was the factor which mostly caused the students anxiety in speaking English by the second semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the motivation in learning English by tenth grade students at SMK N 1 Tana Toraja. To achieve the objective of the study, the writer conducted quantitative descriptive method. The participant of the research was tenth grade students of SMK N 1 Tana Toraja academic year 2017/2018. This research employed a random sampling technique. The data was obtained from questionnaire was to find out the motivation of the tenth grade students in learning English at SMK N 1 Tana Toraja. The result of this research showed that the data analysis through questionnaire was used to find out the motivation in learning English of tenth grade students at SMK N 1 Tana Toraja. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the writer found that were four intrinsic motivation in learning English such us; important, interest, increase our knowledge and self-confidence, challenge and four extrinsic motivation in learning English such us; parents or the other people, get reward, place, have many friends from another countries. The students more chose intrinsic motivation.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know the students’ perception on the language used by the lecturers in teaching at the eight semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja. In this research, the writer used qualitative method. The participant is the eight semester students of English Department of FKIP UKI Toraja academic year 2017/2018. This research employed a snowball sampling where the writer took only 12 students as respondents. Interview was used by the writer in collecting the data. The result showed that the eight semester students of English Department FKIP UKI Toraja is students was really like when lecturers used two language in teaching that is mixing language Indonesian and English

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the perceptions of society toward English course at Kole Barebatu. In this research, the writer used quantitative descriptive method. The population of this research is the the society at Kole Barebatu, there were 844 people consists of 425 male and 419 female. The writer used stratified sampling because the number of object is relatively large. The writer took 31 societies as respondent. The writer choose the representatives of student, office staff, teacher, housewife, bussinesman, farmer, unemployment, and government as respondent. In collecting data, the writer used questionnaire to find out the perceptions of the society toward English Course at Kole Barebatu. The result shows that there are positive perceptions and negative perception from the society of English course at Lembang Kole Barebatu. The positive perception more dominant than negative perception. The positive perceptions such as, the society said agree with English course is important to learn, one of the way to get English knowledge is by a English Course, and can help the society to get a job in the future. The negative perception is the society is disagree if one of the tutors is a student. It means English course that the local government conducted at Kole Barebatu is very exemplary program and it can help the society to get a English knowledge.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out the difficulties faced by the sixth semester students in translating Indonesian text into English text. The writer used qualitative descriptive method to explore the objective of the research. To collect the data the writer used several steps: giving the test for the students, identifying and classifying the students' difficulties in translation. The finding showed that the students faced many difficulties: there are four kinds of difficulties categories of the translation: lexical equivalent, lexical adjustment, grammatical adjustment and grammatical equivalent. students faced two lexical and two grammatical problems in translating text from the source language into the target language where most of the students translated the sentences from the source language into target language directly that they did not pay attention on the context
