Abstract

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing skills presents a unique set of challenges, from developing students' language proficiency to providing personalized feedback and support. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential of AI and NLP, such as ChatGPT, to support language education. This paper explores the potential benefits and challenges of using ChatGPT in EFL writing instruction. This paper is based on a review of relevant literature and highlights the potential of ChatGPT for EFL writing students. ChatGPT's ability to generate human-like text based on the input it receives makes it a potentially helpful tool for supporting students in their writing practice. Its natural language capabilities can engage and motivate learners. However, the potential challenges of using ChatGPT in language education are also discussed, such as the design, implementation and potential ethical concerns. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the potential benefits and challenges of integrating ChatGPT into EFL writing instruction. By exploring the potential of ChatGPT as a tool for language education, we aim to contribute to the ongoing debate on the role of technology and provide guidance for educators interested in using ChatGPT in their classrooms.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore teachers' perceptions, practices, and challenges in Zambia school based teacher professional development programs. The survey sample consisted of four primary schools, four school principals, four schools’ continuous professional development (CPD) coordinators, one DEBS official, and 198 teachers. The major findings show that there is a positive perception of teachers toward school-based CPD programs. In addition, the results show that even though teachers have positively perceived school-based CPD well, the practice of CPD program implementation is at a low level in secondary schools. Furthermore, the study findings indicated the lack of teachers' support from school management and supervisors and lack of collaboration with teachers and school leaders were among the factors that affected the implementation of the CPD program. The study also shows that teachers with more teaching experience positively perceive the school-based CPD programs, and teachers with degree holders practice more CPD activities than diploma holders.

Abstract

The questioning act is considered to be one of the most common and prominent features of classroom interactions. This analysis was proposed to reveal teachers’ questioning acts serving as pragmatic exposures in their corrective feedback strategies as they interact with students in the classroom. Data were collected from two EFL teachers that conveniently observed so-called non-intrusive observation, taking notes, and audio-recording that was subsequently transcribed. Certain episodes obtained from transcription were chosen and scrutinized in light of how well they contributed to the aim of the study using Conversation Analysis (CA). As a result, this study has yielded important insights into what and how questions are. Through corrective feedback, teacher questions were not only regarded and associated with their pedagogical purposes but also with the pragmatic and social function depending on the context where and how they possibly appeared. Besides giving a contribution to the body of knowledge, the questioning act provides significance and brings solutions to problematic classroom interactions that most teachers might have in the class.

Abstract

This research study investigates students’ perceptions and experiences about using the combined inductive-deductive approach in teaching English grammar in intermediate grammar class. The study employed a mixed methods design to answer the research questions. We used a questionnaire including four aspects according to ARCS Model to answer the first research question through examining the perceptions of 65 university students majoring English. Then five of 65 students were selected to be interviewed to explore their experiences on the combined inductive-deductive approach to answer the second research question. The results of the questionnaire and the interviews reveal that most students prefer the combined approach to teaching English grammar although they have positive perceptions towards the inductive or the deductive approach. The combined approach can provide students with better understanding of grammar and keep them involved and interactive in the learning process. Therefore, this current study suggests that further research should be conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the combined approach in the process of teaching grammar and teachers’ perceptions towards such approach.

Abstract

Even though there have been numerous studies on the use of critical thinking in language learning, research that specifically explores the relationship between critical thinking skills and listening comprehension techniques is still infrequently performed in the context of learning English in Indonesia. This study aims to reveal the correlation between EFL students' listening comprehension strategies and their critical thinking ability. Fifty Indonesian EFL students of both sexes were chosen as the study's participants to accomplish this. They were all advanced students that were chosen through cluster sampling. The Critical Thinking Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Listening Comprehension Strategies Questionnaire were the two tools used (RCSQ). On the first day, the researcher thoroughly explained the instructions for this survey and gave the participants a CTQ to assess the tactics they had used. LCSQ was delivered to them on the second day. All of the questions had to be answered within the allotted time by the participants. Fortunately, none of the students missed any of the gathered data, which will improve the accuracy of the findings. The study's conclusions showed a strong correlation between advanced EFL students' listening comprehension techniques and their capacity for critical thought. Results may be important because they help students overcome any challenges they may have with particular language abilities by identifying the tactics they use.

Abstract

This study focuses on the integration of Indonesian traditional music education at the elementary school level as a strategy for promoting culture in Indonesia. It recognizes the significance of social capital, cultural capital, and knowledge capital as the foundation for fostering a comprehensive and systematic approach to cultural development. The research employs interview, observation, and literature review methods to gather data, guided by three key questions: (1) the current state of traditional music teaching in Indonesian elementary schools, (2) the strategies employed in integrating traditional music education, and (3) the outcomes of the Archipelago Traditional Music pre-congress in 2021 within the paradigm of elementary school music education. The analysis is primarily based on the implementation of previous policies and programs, particularly those managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The study's findings reveal several important aspects, including: (1) the need for statutory regulations supporting the conservation of traditional music programs, (2) fostering active collaboration between teachers and traditional artists or musicians through open participation, (3) providing necessary facilities and infrastructure to create an ecosystem conducive to traditional music education at the elementary school level, (4) implementing training programs to enhance the traditional music competence of elementary school teachers, and (5) involving the traditional music community in the design of the curriculum for traditional music education in elementary schools. These results underscore the importance of integrating traditional music education at the elementary school level to promote Indonesian culture. By implementing the suggested strategies, policymakers and educators can contribute to the preservation and development of traditional music, creating a stronger cultural foundation within Indonesian society.

Abstract

This quantitative study utilized R, specifically RStudio, as statistical analysis program in analyzing the dataset on attitudes, opinions, and behaviors with respect to COVID-19. The variables in the dataset are focused on survey items that ask respondents to describe their feelings, physical reaction, perception, attitudes and behaviors towards various issues and aspects that concerns the current pandemic. The study intends to determine dimensionality of the dataset through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and factor analysis, find out the factor loadings about observed variables and latent variables in the dataset, generate a model through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and interpret how the findings relate to educational leadership and management in the new normal. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) reveals that there are four components with most significant representation in the dataset which was confirmed by the scree plots and factor analysis that four factors are sufficient to analyze the dataset. Loadings revealed that these four factors are media, spiritual, political, and cultural aspects. A model that can guide interpretation and future related studies about attitudes, opinions, and behaviors with respect to COVID-19 has been generated through Structural Equation Modeling. It was implied by the findings that the four factors and their observable variables may be used as bases by educational leaders in gathering and analyzing data about attitudes, opinions, and behaviors of school stakeholders towards COVID-19 which can guide them in crafting and implementing responses, innovations and policies that are parallel to pandemic context).
