Abstract

English as a foreign language is a compulsory subject in every study program at university. English given in non-English departments is usually called English for specific purposes (ESP). Therefore, the English material given is adjusted to each department. However, in non-English departments, students sometimes feel bored in attending English learning process because it is not their interest. Lecturers must provide material without making students bored and make fun learning atmosphere so that students are active during the learning process. This research discusses the influence of student-centered learning (SCL) in English learning process, especially in non-English department students, related to the students' learning independence. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method using observation. The study used a sample of 38 non-English department students who took English course in one semester as respondents. Data were obtained from observations in learning process, questionnaires, and English score obtained by the students. Data analyses using percentage of questionare result and the mean score of the students as additional evidence of research result. The research results show that almost 90% students being active in the English class using SCL if the material related to their major. If the material is about English grammar which explained using SCL through students’ presentation, they are still difficult to understand the material. Grammar material is easier for students to understand if it is explained by the lecturer or what is called teacher-centered learning (TCL). In other words, lecturers can apply SCL in the English learning process for materials related to each major (ESP) to increase students’ activeness and independence during the learning process.

Abstract

This study explores students’ use and perceptions of AI grammar checkers in English grammar learning. Conducted with 30 fourth-semester students of the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Cokroaminoto Palopo, the research employed a descriptive quantitative design using a structured questionnaire consisting of 6 items related to usage and 12 Likert-scale items measuring perception. The questionnaire was adapted from previous studies and analyzed using SPSS version 26. The results indicate that the majority of students frequently used AI grammar tools, particularly Grammarly and QuillBot during academic writing, with most reporting that they discovered these tools through peers. Descriptive statistics showed high agreement on statements related to usefulness, such as helping identify mistakes (M = 1.40), improving writing quality (M = 1.97), and supporting learning from feedback (M = 2.00). However, concerns were also found regarding overreliance (M = 1.93), confusion with suggestions (M = 2.47), and trust in accuracy (M = 2.63). Interestingly, students did not prefer AI over human correction (M = 3.90), highlighting their continued reliance on teacher support. These findings suggest that AI grammar checkers are valuable supplementary tools when used critically and in combination with guided instruction.

The findings show that most respondents frequently watch English movies for both learning and entertainment purposes, with YouTube and Telegram being the most preferred platforms. Disney and drama genres were highly favored due to their clear pronunciation and engaging storylines. English subtitles were widely used to support understanding of spoken content. The results indicate that English movies are perceived as highly beneficial in enhancing listening comprehension, pronunciation, and vocabulary acquisition. Additionally, participants reported increased confidence and motivation when learning through movies compared to traditional methods. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed strong positive trends in learner attitudes, especially in relation to enjoyment and vocabulary gain. The study concludes that English movies, when used intentionally and supported by subtitles, serve as an effective tool for developing listening skills across diverse learner groups and can complement formal or independent language learning practices.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of using video recording assignments in EFL speaking classes, focusing on their influence on students’ confidence, motivation, and learning outcomes. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data were gathered from 30 fourth-semester English Education students at UHN I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa Denpasar through a Likert-scale questionnaire. Findings indicate that the majority of students have a positive perception of video recording tasks. They reported increased comfort, confidence, and fluency when speaking English via video compared to in- class speaking. Students also found video recordings helpful for identifying speaking mistakes and improving performance. However, some challenges were noted, particularly technical issues and the time-consuming nature of video production. While most students acknowledged the benefits, opinions were mixed about whether such tasks should continue in future classes. These findings suggest that while video assignments can enhance speaking skills and learner autonomy, practical barriers need to be addressed for their effective implementation.
