The journal is a semiannual peer-reviewed publication of the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Nasional Karangturi Semarang. Abstract

In today’s modern era, it has become a common phenomenon to hear swearing words that are often spoken by people around us, as well as UNAKI students who live in dormitories and come from various regions. Lack of education about the use of swearing words, makes them quite often use these swearing words in daily conversation with their friends because they are young and vulnerable. Therefore, educating them about the dangers of swearing words is very much needed for the sake of the better quality of the younger generation. The aim is to analyze the use of swearing words that are often spoken by UNAKI students living in dormitories and to analyze the function of swearing words used by UNAKI students living in dormitories. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design. The population in this study was all students who lived in dormitories. 20 teenagers were sampled with 5 people from each area consisting of Lampung, Kalimantan, Medan, and Papua. The research data were obtained by observation, interviews, note-taking, and simak methods. The result of this research is that there are five types of swearing words used by UNAKI students who live in dormitories: obscenity, abusive, blasphemy, expletive, and humorous. They use swearing words to express their indescribable feelings such as anger, annoyance, and show intimacy in a friendship relationship. The conclusion is that the swearing words used by UNAKI students who live in dormitories have five types and three functions.

Abstract

This research entitled Maxim of Politeness Used in “The Grand Final of American Got Talent 2021”: A Pragmatics Analysis. This research focused on Leech’s theory maxim of politeness found in The Grand Final of American Got Talent. The purpose of this research is to identify, classify, analysis the types and the function of politeness in maxim used in the conversation in the event of The Grand Final of American Got Talent. The research method was conducted on qualitative methods. The data source was taken from the event of American Got Talent on youtube. The data are collected by listening method (simak) and note-taking technique (catat). In collecting data, the writer concentrates on the utterance which contains the maxim of politeness produced by the judges and participants of the grand final. Based on the result of the maxim of politeness in The Grand Final of American Got Talent 2021, it was found that six types and functions are maxims of politeness. There are tact maxims, generosity maxims, approbation maxims, modesty maxims, agreement maxims, and sympathy maxims. It is expected that this research will help the students and other readers in learning the pragmatic aspects, especially about the maxim of politeness.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate implementing the "English for School" program at M.A.N. 1 Bandar Lampung. The method used in this research washe descriptive qualitative method. The data source was students, tutors, and teachers in M.A.N. 1, the Bandarlampung academic year 2022/2023, through direct observation, interviews, and documentation of learning outcomes. The discussion and the observation aimed to gather information from the students, English teachers, and English tutors. The consultation with teachers, tutors, and students shows that the "English for School" program is well used to improve students' speaking skills, including the vocabulary and expressions related to daily conversation. Besides, the observation result found that student's confidence in speaking skills improved because of more practicing in English Area, especially with the tutors, and presenting something in English in front of the class during the program. The program could motivate and stimulate the students to use English in daily activities with anyone, anywhere.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate internal factors hindering the attainment of English proficiency standards in the Common ASEAN Tourism Curriculum. The study was conducted to tourism students. The study used a descriptive qualitative method and the data were gained through questionnaires for the students in three sub-divisions; Hotel Accommodation, Food and Beverage, and Hotel Engineering. The findings showed that there are several internal factors that hinder the attainment of English proficiency standards. The internal factors include the lack of confidence to use English in interaction in the learning process and outside the class; the minimum ability to reach general English and English proficiency standards; the monotonous learning style in learning English; the lack of self-esteem in case of following the learning process by doing an assignment or practicing; the limited exploration and use of knowledge about English terms based on their subdivision; the lack of intrinsic motivation as the reason to improve their skill in English; the passive attitude by the students toward learning process of English subject. Abstract

The identity-taking process involves a complicated push-and-pull relation from different related aspects like language, culture, and differences. To understand this concept deeper, a self-study is required to explore how one’s life experience of encountering diverse cultures, language barriers, and differences can trigger themselves to define who they are and what relation they have with their surroundings. This is study is a self-reflection based on the author’s personal life experience to ignite the challenges of constructing identity due to cultural barriers, language ownership, and social relations with other people involved.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the difficulties faced by EFL leaners’ in speaking English. The identification of the difficulties covers the six aspects of speaking skill, namely, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and task. The The participants of the study were the first semester non-English Department students of Universitas Tidar who took English as General Course Class. The research data were collected from the students’ spoken production and responses to the questionnaire. The results of the study show that there are three major difficulties identified from the students’ responses. They are grammar (48%), pronunciation (27%), vocabulary (12%), and the other aspects less than 10%.

Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of translation techniques applied in translating the figurative language in song lyrics in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam movie and the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research is descriptive qualitative study. The purposes of the research are (1) to find out the figurative language in song lyrics, (2)to describe the techniques used by the translator in translating the figurative language in song lyrics in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam movie subtitle into Indonesian, and (3) to find out the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research was a descriptive qualitative study. The data were the figurative language in song lyrics in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam movie. The other data were information obtained from the questionnaire distributed to three raters. The total data of the figurative language in song lyric from the movie were 91 data. The analysis on the translation techniques shows that there are three techniques applied in translating the figurative language in song lyrics in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam movie they are removal of figurative texture, alteration of figurative texture, and identify in figurative texture.

Abstract

Writing a summary related to reading and writing. Writing a summary of a text not only helps students assimilate what they have read by highlighting and connecting the key points but also enables them to articulate their thoughts in writing. It means that a summary must be brief, accurate, and written in individual words. This study describes teaching summarization both manual and automatic summarization for students. This research is library research. The analysis shows that writing and summarizing a journal article is a common task for students. Students can read articles for summaries, plan good summaries, and write summaries to completion. Writing a summary can be manual or online (automatic) summarization. Manually, students need to consider several points before writing a summary including avoiding using personal pronouns, making sentences as objective as possible, beginning by defining the problem statement, discussing the author’s methodology, describing the research results, connecting the main ideas featured, do not conclude, provide the interpretation, avoid using direct quotes from journal articles, use appropriate tenses and improve students writing design. Students must check their self-evaluation of summarising skills, such as expressing the central idea or theme as a statement/declarative, assessing the quantity, quality, and order of the evidence, constructing evidence for inferential reasoning, paraphrasing details in their words, and avoiding common pitfalls. While automatic summarisation involved an online summarizer tool. Many summarization tools are available for English languages with abundant resources. However, students need to consider the benefits and the limitations.

Abstract

Understanding proverbs in English is one of the materials that must be studied in English literature lessons at school. Proverbs are one of the oldest types of literature that have ever existed, and they are a type of literary work that must be mastered because proverbs themselves have meanings, goals, and values that are very beneficial to students. Through understanding literary material, students can learn valuable lessons in interpreting the meaning of the sentences conveyed. Therefore, this research aims to find out students' opinions on using body gestures to demonstrate and understand the meaning of proverbs in English. The method used in this research is qualitative research through a descriptive approach. The informants in this study were 36 students who took selective English literature subjects. Data were obtained through direct observation of learning activities and interviews to obtain more comprehensive information. After the data is collected, it is analyzed through three stages: data reduction, data display, and data conclusion. The results of the study show that utilizing body gestures in learning proverbs can help people more easily understand the meaning and significance of a proverb. In addition, students are also encouraged to be more active and motivated to be involved in learning activities because the learning situation becomes more enjoyable.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out the structural personalities (id, ego, and superego) of Tengo Kawana from psychoanalysis in the Town of Cats short story by Haruki Murakami 2011 and to find out the kinds of anxieties of Tengo Kawana viewed from psychoanalysis appears in the Town of Cats short story by Haruki Murakami 2011. To find the personalities and the anxiety of the major Character on the novel, the researcher used Sigmund Freud Theory. This research is descriptive qualitative by analyzing the novel into description and explanation. The data are collected by taking a note technique. The writer used referential method for analyzing the data by looking for Tengo Kawana’s utterances and narration, making note from the problem, classifying the data based on the structure of personality and anxiety. Analyzing the data is based on structure of personality and anxiety of Tengo Kawana in Town of Cats short story by Haruki Murakami 2011, drawing conclusion. The conclusion of this research shows that there are id, ego, superego and the kinds of anxiety appearing within Town of Cats short story by Haruki Murakami 2011.
