Abstract

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases among older adults. Limited health literacy often reduces older people's ability to perform appropriate diabetes self-management, increasing the risk of chronic complications. Community-based health education has been recognized as an effective strategy to improve knowledge and self-management behaviors among individuals with diabetes. Objective: To improve older adults' knowledge regarding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus management through the Solusi Inspiratif Tanggap Diabetes Bersama (SITABETA) community-based education program. Methods: This community service program employed a community-based health education approach using the principles of Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME). Twenty older adults living in KP Stangkle RT 001/RW 016, Kemiri Muka Village, Beji District, Depok City participated in the program. The intervention consisted of health education sessions, diabetic foot care demonstrations, interactive discussions, and educational leaflets. Participants' knowledge was evaluated using pretest and posttest questionnaires, and the data were analyzed descriptively using frequencies and percentages. Results: Prior to the intervention, 50% of participants had poor knowledge, 40% had moderate knowledge, and only 10% demonstrated good knowledge regarding diabetes management. Following the intervention, the proportion of participants with good knowledge increased to 70%, moderate knowledge decreased to 20%, and poor knowledge declined to 10%. These findings indicate that community-based diabetes education effectively improved older adults' knowledge of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus management. Conclusion: The SITABETA program effectively enhanced older adults' knowledge regarding Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus management through a community-based educational approach. This program represents the translation of research findings into community service and has the potential to become a sustainable educational model for community health programs.

Abstract

Background: High out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditures and the persistent gap between health insurance coverage and utilization in rural communities continue to threaten household financial stability. Limited public understanding of self-enrolled membership in Indonesia’s National Health Insurance (JKN) contributes to low administrative independence and suboptimal use of health insurance benefits. This community engagement program aimed to improve community literacy regarding self-enrolled JKN membership through an educational facilitation approach. Methods: The program involved 30 housewives in Kampung Babakan, Petir Village, Bogor, Indonesia. A participatory and interactive educational facilitation method was implemented using a pocket guide containing practical information on self-enrolled JKN membership, including registration procedures, account activation, and membership status verification. Results: The educational intervention resulted in substantial improvements in participants’ knowledge and practical skills related to JKN membership. Following the program, all participants (100%) successfully activated their JKN Mobile accounts and independently verified their membership status, demonstrating enhanced administrative capability in accessing JKN services. Conclusion: Educational facilitation using practical learning materials effectively strengthened community literacy and administrative self-reliance regarding self-enrolled JKN membership. The program also helped reshape participants’ perceptions of JKN as a “health savings” mechanism that provides financial protection against healthcare costs, thereby supporting the sustainability of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) at the community level.

Abstract

Background: Technological advancements have accelerated digital transformation in public services, including the introduction of PANDAWA by BPJS Kesehatan. However, disparities in digital health literacy among community members remain a major barrier to optimizing access to administrative services under Indonesia’s National Health Insurance (JKN) program. This community engagement initiative aimed to improve participants’ health literacy, procedural understanding, and independence in accessing and utilizing PANDAWA services. Methods: The program was conducted in the service area of UPTD Puskesmas Tapos on November 13, 2025, involving 30 participants through a participatory approach that integrated lectures, feature demonstrations, hands-on practice using official leaflets, and facilitated interactive discussions. Program outcomes were quantitatively evaluated using a pre-test and post-test design Results: The results demonstrated a substantial increase in the proportion of participants with high health literacy, from 43% at pre-test to 80% following the intervention. Improvements in practical skills included participants’ ability to independently access PANDAWA through its designated single contact number and understand eight types of digital administrative services without requiring an in-person visit to a BPJS Kesehatan branch office. Conclusion: The program achieved its objectives of strengthening digital health literacy and promoting community independence in accessing PANDAWA services. These findings suggest that the intervention has the potential to support more efficient, cost-effective, and inclusive access to JKN administrative services at the primary healthcare level.
