SoCul (ISSN:2798-4672 ) is a bimonthly journal aiming at facilitating and sharing the disseminations of research findings, elaboration of theories, methods, knowledge, social engineering and learning and outputs in terms of breakthroughs, innovations, best practices in terms of community service or outreach relevant with Social and cultural issues. It mainly focuses, not limited, research papers related to what are considered being connected with social culture issues such as cultural values and heritage, literature, language learning, art and education. It may include economic and technology issue in the sense of social engineering and network development for poverty and illiteracy solution.

Abstract

This research is intended to reveal the impact of patriarchy in Hendrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. In conducting this research, the researchers use qualitative method. The data are collected in the forms of word, and need the researchers’ active participation and also the deep analysis of the research. The researchers use Marxist feminist that considers describing women’s basic material weakness and women’s statues and class on the family. The researchers also use the three structures of patriarchy by Walby to classify the data. The first result is the impact of patriarchy in economic control. Second result is the impact of patriarchy in culture structure such as woman subordination and gender stereotype, and the third results is the impact of patriarchy in violence such as Violation of Women’s right and Verbal violence.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine whether or not there is an effect on the use of generative learning strategy to improve students’ writing skill in descriptive texts at grade eight of SMP N 6 Tondano. This study involves 30 students consisting 15 students in experimental group and 15 students in control group. This study uses a quantitative research design which is a quasi-experimental research. Data collecting is done by giving a test to write a descriptive text with pre-test and post-test, by students’ in two groups. The mean score of experimental group is 17.73 and control group was 9.6. The data are analyzed using the t-test formula, the results is 5.055. The degrees of freedom is 28 were competency interval 0.05 (95%) is 2.048 and 0,01 (99%) is 2.763. Based on the result, it can be concluded that students’ skill in writing descriptive texts using generative learning increases, but does not increase significantly because from the post-test results on experimental group there are no students’ who are able to achieve score above the KKM. So, the researchers suggest that generative learning strategy should be replaced with other learning strategy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the values of heroism in the novel The Call of The Wild by Jack London. This study aims to describe the heroism values contained in the novel The Call of the Wild by Jack London with a objective approach. To analyze the data, the researcher used qualitative methods, because the data were collected in the form of words. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources. The main source is the novel itself entitled The Call of the Wild. Secondary sources are books, articles, internet, and other literary works. In this research, there are six elements of the values of heroism they are: 1) Strength, 2) Bravery, 3) Integrity, 4) Saving Others, 5) Willing to Sacrifice, and 6) Selfless.

Abstract

This study looked into whether or not using a spelling bee game may help pupils enhance their vocabulary mastery. The goal of this study is to see if students' vocabulary improved after playing the Spelling Bee Game. The quantitative method is used to conduct this study. This study uses a pre-experimental design with a single group pre test and post test. The subject of this research is first grade of SMP Anugrah Tondano consists of 10 students. The tests are in the forms of arrange random words, multiple choice and connecting pairs. The results of this study reveal that the mean post-test scores are higher (75) than the pre-test scores (46). Based on the findings, it can be stated that using the Spelling Bee Game to boost students' vocabulary is helpful since it stimulates students' learning and spelling of nouns.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal struggle in Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. In conducting this study, the writers delimit only in revealing Josephine’s struggle for a better life. This research is qualitative research. The data are collected in form of words or picture rather than numbers. The data are taken only from the work itself and to see the interrelationship between the elements of the novel. The result of this study is to show the struggle of Jo for a better life. The first struggle is about Jo’s family, the second is struggle for Jo’s goals, and the last one is struggle in her love. Jo was motivated from the condition around her, so she wants to earn money to help her family financial, and make herself achieve the dream. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott teaches that struggle is a part of human life, so do not give up to achieve any good things all human beings heart's desire.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze woman's fight for emancipation in Jane Eyre novel by Charlotte Bronte, a novel written in the Victorian era and first published in 1847. Woman emancipation refers to woman's struggle to obtain rights that should be given in order for her potential to develop and function fully in certain aspects of life. In this study, the writers use qualitative research because the data are gathered in the form of words rather than numbers. The mimetic approach also employs in order to seek woman’s fight for a better life. There are two kinds of sources namely primary and secondary sources. The primary source is the novel itself whereas the secondary sources are from books and internet references. The result of the analysis shows Jane Eyre’s fight for woman emancipation, she has authority and freedom as a human being who is fully entitled to herself, and is able to decide the best path for herself. By using the feminism theory of Betty Friedan in The Feminine Mystique, it can be concluded that Jane Eyre is able to show her ability and become a female character who can be an excellent role model in the fight for emancipation.

Abstract

This research is titled "An Analysis of Politeness Maxims Used by the Main Character in Coco Movie," this study focuses on maxims related to the politeness principle by Leech. As a result, the researchers create a problem as follows: What kinds of maxims are used in the Coco Movie? The researchers employe Leech's Theory to address the question. The descriptive qualitative approach is employed in this study. The discussions in the Coco Movie script are the source of this study's data. After examining the data, it is discovered that the Movie Coco contains five maxims. The following are the statistics: 9 tact maxims, 5 generosity maxims, 1 modesty maxim, 4 approbation maxims, and 5 agreement maxims. Furthermore, tact maxim is the most frequently used maxim in Coco’s movie since the main character in this movie is concerned more with giving benefit to people around him, by using the tact maxim the speaker shows respect to the hearer by employing the tact maxim.
