Abstract

Neglected anterior shoulder dislocation (NASD) is an uncommon yet clinically demanding condition, largely because diagnosis and treatment are frequently delayed. Patients often develop secondary problems such as glenoid bone loss, capsular contracture, and ongoing instability, all of which call for a carefully chosen surgical strategy. This report describes the management of a chronic case using open reduction and internal fixation. A 25-year-old man was seen after sustaining an anterior shoulder dislocation that had remained untreated for four months. Clinical examination combined with plain radiographs established the diagnosis. Through a deltopectoral approach the glenohumeral joint was reduced under direct vision and stabilized with two 2.0-mm K-wires. At the two-week review both clinical examination and repeat radiographs confirmed that the joint had been restored to an anatomic position with good stability. The patient had no appreciable sensory or motor deficit in the limb, and neurovascular function remained intact. These early results indicate that open reduction and internal fixation can reliably address chronic NASD and reduce the risk of recurrent instability. Nevertheless, longer-term surveillance is required to confirm lasting joint stability and to detect any late complications that may develop.

Abstract

Undernutrition remains a pressing issue among university students, particularly in tourism programs that emphasize physical appearance. This study aimed to examine the relationship between body image and restrained eating with undernutrition among students of the Tourism Destination Study Program at Universitas Airlangga. A cross-sectional design was employed involving 114 students from the 2024–2025 cohorts selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Body image was measured using BSQ-16, restrained eating was measured using DEBQ, and nutritional status was determined based on BMI. The results showed that most respondents had negative body image, practiced restrained eating, had inadequate macronutrient intake, and were classified as having normal nutritional status. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between body image and restrained eating with undernutrition, but in an inverse pattern. Students with undernutrition were more likely to have a positive body image and engage in unrestrained eating, whereas students with normal to excess nutritional statuses tended to have negative body images and practice restrained eating. These findings indicate that students in the tourism field tend to prioritize ideal body standards over objectively evaluating their bodies based on health indicators.

Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive chronic illness that requires long-term management and active family involvement. Functional limitations, recurrent exacerbations, and psychosocial impacts highlight the importance of family support in COPD care. This study aimed to analyze the role of family in the care and management of patients with COPD through a systematic literature review. The review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Literature searches were carried out using PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar with keywords related to COPD, family support, caregivers, self-management, and palliative care. Ten articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using descriptive and thematic approaches. The findings indicate that family support plays a crucial role in improving self-efficacy, self-management behaviors, treatment adherence, and quality of life among patients with COPD. Family involvement also contributes to care decision-making, prevention of exacerbations, and the effectiveness of palliative care. However, caregiving responsibilities may impose physical and emotional burdens on caregivers. Therefore, COPD management should adopt a family-centered approach through education, continuous support, and caregiver empowerment to achieve comprehensive and sustainable patient care outcomes.

Abstract

Undernutrition is a complex global issue that is still found in various parts of the world. To prevent the various impacts caused by undernutrition in children, early intervention is needed through the implementation of appropriate Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices, one of which is meeting the Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD) indicators for children aged 6-23 months. The fulfillment of MDD in children can be influenced by various factors, one of which is the maternal education. This narrative review aims to analyze the relationship between maternal education level and MDD fulfillment in children aged 6-23 months. A literature search was conducted for full-text open access articles published between 2015 and 2025 in English from scientific databases such as Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Maternal education level has consistently been shown to be positively associated with MDD fulfillment in children aged 6-23 months across various countries, although the strength of the reported association varies depending on the social and economic context, and access to nutrition information and health services. Therefore, the implications of public health policies are important to be directed not only at improving long-term formal education, but also at short-term interventions through nutrition programs such as nutritional counseling related to complementary feeding in antenatal and postnatal services, posyandu, and community-based nutrition education.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a public health concern in Kupang City, particularly in the working area of Sikumana Community Health Center (Puskesmas), which recorded 23 cases and 1 death in 2023, 46 cases in 2024, and 18 cases in 2025. This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of the Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Prevention and Control Program (P2DBD) at Sikumana Puskesmas. A qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews and documentation involving four informants. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed that the input components were reasonably adequate, including sufficient and well-trained human resources, as well as methods aligned with the Ministry of Health guidelines. However, infrastructure remained incomplete, notably the absence of fogging machines and limited abate stock. Funding was sourced from the Health Operational Assistance (BOK) allocated for abate procurement, fogging, and transportation. Regarding the process aspect, program implementation was not yet optimal, as indicated by suboptimal fogging activities, low community participation in larval nest eradication (PSN), insufficient understanding of abate usage, and address-related obstacles hindering epidemiological investigations. Program outputs also fell short of targets, with the Larva-Free Rate (ABJ) below 95% and household PSN coverage below 90%. Overall, the implementation of the P2DBD program was considered reasonably good; however, its effectiveness has not been fully achieved. Improvements are needed in community education, PSN monitoring, abate availability, as well as data management and cross-sector coordination.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem among children under five. The assessment of stunting status is conducted using the height-for-age (HFA) index based on z-scores, where a value of < −2 standard deviations indicates stunting. This study aimed to identify determinant factors contributing to stunting among children aged 12–59 months in the working area of Langara Public Health Center. This study employed a quantitative approach with an analytical cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 100 children under five selected using simple random sampling. The inclusion criteria were children aged 12–59 months at the time of the study. Data were collected through observation and interviews using questionnaires on respondent characteristics, complementary feeding (MP-ASI) history, and family income. Data analysis was conducted bivariately using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The bivariate analysis results showed a significant association between complementary feeding history (p = 0.003), while family income showed no significant association (p = 0.223) with the incidence of stunting among children aged 12–59 months in the working area of Langara Public Health Center.

Abstract

Adolescent smoking remains a critical public health concern in Indonesia. The prevalence of tobacco use among individuals aged 10–18 years has continued to rise, failing to meet the national target of 5.4% set by the Medium-Term National Development Plan (RPJMN). Given that smoking behavior is inherently progressive rather than a binary phenomenon, ordinal logistic regression provides a methodologically appropriate framework for examining its determinants. This study aimed to analyze the influence of cigarette price per stick, intention to smoke within the next 12 months, and peer influence on smoking behavior among 13-year-old adolescents in Indonesia. Secondary data were obtained from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Indonesia 2019, with a final analytical sample of 1,893 students aged 13 years. All three independent variables jointly exerted a significant effect on smoking status (p = 0.000). In partial analysis, cigarette price and peer influence were significant across all categories, whereas smoking intention was only significant for the "probably not" category. The model demonstrated satisfactory fit and validity, confirmed by the goodness-of-fit test (p = 0.919) and the test of parallel lines (p = 0.925). Physical environmental factors (cigarette affordability) and social environmental factors (peer influence) constitute the dominant determinants of smoking behavior among 13-year-old adolescents in Indonesia.

Abstract

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a significant nutritional problem and is closely associated with inadequate intake of protein and iron. One potential strategy to address this issue is through the development of functional foods based on local ingredients. Soft cookies, as a popular snack, can be nutritionally enhanced through the substitution of chicken liver flour and moringa leaf flour, which are rich in protein and iron. This study aimed to analyze the acceptability and nutritional content of soft cookies with these substitutions. A true experimental design with a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed, involving two factors: chicken liver flour substitution (30%, 35%, 40%) and moringa leaf flour substitution (5% and 10%), resulting in six formulations. Acceptability was evaluated using a hedonic test by 40 untrained panelists, while nutritional analysis was conducted on the best formulation using titrimetric methods for protein and ICP-OES for iron. The results showed that substitution significantly affected color, aroma, and taste (p<0.05), but had no significant effect on texture (p>0.05). The best formulation was F3 (35% chicken liver flour and 5% moringa leaf flour), containing 14.58 g protein/100 g and 7.05 mg iron/100 g. These findings indicate that the developed soft cookies have potential as a nutritious snack alternative to support anemia prevention among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Tract Infections (ARI) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among under-fives in Indonesia. Toddlers have a high risk of developing ARI due to their suboptiomal immune system. Environmental factors such as exposure to cigarette smoke, overcrowding, and lack of exclusive breastfeeding can exacerbate this condition. This study aimed to identify the main factors influencing the incidence of ARI in under-fives through systematic analysis. This study used a systematic literature review method with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) approach. Data wew obtained from Google Scholar using the keywords “risk factors”, “ARI”, and “under-five” for period 2019-2024. From the initial 8.200 articles, a selection process was carried out until 10 relevant articles were selected for further analysis.Exposure to indoor tobacco smoke worsens air quality and increases the risk of respiratory infections. Overcrowding and inadequate ventilation degrade air quality, creating ideal conditions for infection transmission. Exclusive breastfeeding, which is rich in immunoglobulin, has been shown to provide important protection against ARI. Therefore, prevention efforts should focus on reducing exposure to tobacco smoke, improving living conditions, and increasing education on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. The main factors influencing the incidence of ARI in children under-five are exposue to tobacco smoke, overcrowding, and lack of exclusive breastfeeding. ARI prevemtion efforts should include interventions against these factors to reduce the preva;ence and impact on under-fives

Abstract

Quercetin is a plant flavonol with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory properties that may be relevant to breast cancer therapy. This literature review aims to evaluate the potential of quercetin as an anticancer agent in breast cancer and to identify its main mechanisms, therapeutic combinations, and research gaps. Literature was reviewed from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and open-access journal platforms using combinations of the keywords “quercetin,” “breast cancer,” “anticancer,” “apoptosis,” and “chemotherapy sensitization.” The review focused on articles published from 2021 to 2026 and included experimental, in vivo, organoid, and recent review studies directly related to quercetin and breast cancer. The synthesis shows that quercetin inhibits breast cancer cell growth through apoptosis induction, reactive oxygen species regulation, mitochondrial membrane disruption, caspase activation, cell-cycle arrest, senescence-related pathways, and suppression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Combination studies indicate synergistic or chemosensitizing effects. However, most evidence remains preclinical; clinical validation, pharmacokinetic studies, and delivery-system optimization are still required.
