Abstract

Anxiety is a psychological condition frequently experienced by athletes when facing evaluative situations or competitive events. This condition can affect athletes’ focus, emotional stability, and mental readiness to perform at their best. One technique that is not pharmacological has the potential to lessen feelings of anxiety is the consumption of dark chocolate, which contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tryptophan, and magnesium that play a role in mood regulation. This research sought to ascertain the impact of consuming 70% dark chocolate on the anxiety levels of taekwondo athletes in Bondowoso prior to participating in a belt promotion test. The study employed a randomized controlled trial design involving 60 athletes who were split up into an experimental group and a control group. The analysis results showed that the reduction in anxiety scores in the group consuming dark chocolate was greater than in the control group, with a mean difference of 7,43 in the experimental group and 2,90 in the control group (p = 0,000). These findings indicate that consumption of dark chocolate with 70% cocoa content has an effect on reducing anxiety levels among Bondowoso taekwondo athletes facing promotion tests.

Abstract

Background: Inflammatory gingival enlargement is a periodontal condition often associated with plaque accumulation and can be exacerbated by local factors such as tooth malposition. Chronic inflammatory changes can develop into a fibrotic component that does not fully regress after nonsurgical therapy, necessitating surgical intervention to restore physiological and aesthetic gingival contour. This case report aims to describe the management of gingivectomy as a corrective therapy for gingival contour in a patient with tooth malposition that did not show optimal resolution after initial therapy. Case: A 23-year-old woman presented with gingival enlargement in the anterior mandibular region accompanied by bleeding during toothbrushing. Examination revealed crowding of teeth 33–43, moderate OHI category, plaque index 32%, gingival index 1.2, and pseudopockets with an average depth of 4 mm. Initial therapy, including scaling and root planing and oral hygiene education, resulted in improvement in inflammation, but gingival enlargement persisted. Gingivectomy using the external bevel technique was performed in the area, followed by gingivoplasty and periodontal pack placement. Result: A two-week post-procedure evaluation revealed no gingival enlargement or bleeding on probing, a decrease in probing depth to an average of 2 mm, and significant improvements in hygiene and plaque index. Conclusion: Gingivectomy preceded by early-phase therapy effectively removes excess gingival tissue, reduces pseudopockets, and creates a more physiological gingival contour. Controlling etiologic factors and maintaining oral hygiene play a crucial role in successful therapy.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, including in the working area of the Lateri Community Health Center in Ambon City. TB transmission occurs through airborne droplets and poses a high risk to family members living in the same household as patients due to frequent and close contact. Family knowledge plays a crucial role in determining preventive behaviors against TB transmission. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of family knowledge and TB prevention practices. This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population and sample consisted of 42 respondents who were family members of TB patients, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using the chi-square test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed that the majority of respondents had good knowledge (81%) and good prevention practices (81%). Bivariate analysis revealed that respondents with poor knowledge tended to have inadequate prevention practices (75%), while those with good knowledge were more likely to demonstrate good prevention practices (79.4%). The statistical test results indicated a p-value of 0.006 (p < 0.05), confirming a significant relationship between knowledge level and TB prevention practices. It can be concluded that higher levels of family knowledge are associated with better TB prevention practices. Therefore, continuous health education is essential to strengthen the role of families in preventing and controlling the transmission of tuberculosis.

Abstract

The misuse of dextromethorphan among adolescents and young adults has become a health issue that is increasingly receiving global attention. Drug abuse remains a public health problem that requires serious attention in Indonesia. This issue not only involves the misuse of narcotic and psychotropic drugs, but has also expanded to include over-the-counter limited drugs that are easily obtained without a prescription, such as dextromethorphan. Adolescents are the group most vulnerable to drug abuse behavior. Several factors contribute to this problem, including peer influence, lack of knowledge about drugs and their effects, and the ease of obtaining limited over-the-counter medicines. In Bengkulu Province, the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority and Bengkulu Regional Police in 2023 confiscated thousands of bottles of cough medicines such as Samcodin and Komix that were proven to be misused by teenagers, including in South Bengkulu. This study used the accidental sampling method with a single variable. Data were collected through questionnaires before and after educational intervention involving 39 respondents to determine students' level of knowledge about the dangers of dextromethorphan abuse. The results showed that before the educational intervention, 11 respondents had good knowledge, 5 had moderate knowledge, and 23 had poor knowledge. After the intervention, all respondents (39 people or 100%) were categorized as having good knowledge. The Wilcoxon test result showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the educational intervention significantly improved adolescents' knowledge about the dangers of dextromethorphan abuse.

Abstract

Constipation is a common digestive disorder characterized by infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, and straining, and is particularly prevalent among adolescents due to low dietary fiber intake. Addressing this issue requires innovative approaches to improve fiber consumption through foods that are both familiar and acceptable to this age group. This narrative review explores the potential use of Eucheuma cottonii (seaweed) and Pleurotus ostreatus (white oyster mushroom) as high-fiber functional ingredients in adolescent-targeted food products. Evidence from recent studies indicates that both ingredients are rich in dietary fiber and can contribute to improved digestive health. When moderately substituted into popular food formulations such as dimsum mentai, they can enhance nutritional value while maintaining acceptable sensory characteristics. This review aims to explore the potential of these two ingredients by discussing their nutritional composition, functional roles, and sensory effects, highlighting their promise in the development of fiber-enriched snacks for constipation prevention and management in adolescents. These strategies are expected to support healthier dietary patterns and improve overall gastrointestinal well-being in this population.

Abstract

Anemia is a nutritional problem among adolescent girls and remains a public health concern. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for anemia among female students at SMAN 1 Sampolawa. This research employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional analytic design. The sample consisted of 78 female students selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The inclusion criteria were students in good health at the time of data collection, while the exclusion criteria were students who were menstruating during data collection. Data were collected through observation and interviews, and protein intake was assessed using a 24-hour food recall. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test and multivariate analysis with a significance level of α = 0.05. The bivariate analysis showed no significant association between protein intake (p = 0.767) and nutritional status (p = 0.747) with the incidence of anemia. However, a significant association was found between menstrual cycle and anemia (p = 0.001). The multivariate analysis indicated that protein intake was not significantly associated with anemia (p = 0.767; OR = 0.80; 95% CI = 0.18–3.54), and nutritional status also showed no significant effect. In contrast, menstrual cycle was significantly associated with anemia (p = 0.001; OR = 49.00; 95% CI = 9.53–251.80), indicating that menstrual cycle is a strong risk factor for anemia among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Poor sleep quality is prevalent among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, particularly those undergoing hemodialysis, significantly impacting their quality of life, mental health, and mortality risk. Complementary therapies such as aromatherapy, guided imagery, music therapy, and progressive muscle relaxation have shown efficacy in reducing anxiety and improving sleep in chronic illness populations. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of various complementary therapies for managing sleep disturbances, anxiety, and quality of life in hemodialysis patients. Following PRISMA guidelines, we analyzed peer-reviewed English articles (2015–2025) sourced from Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and Crossref. Screening and data extraction were conducted by two independent reviewers to ensure rigor. The final synthesis of ten studies (six RCTs, two quasi-experimental, and two cross-sectional) indicates that non-pharmacological interventions, notably acupressure, offer a safe and holistic approach to enhancing sleep quality. These findings support Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory by emphasizing patient empowerment in symptom management.

Abstract

Sexual violence against children and adolescents is a serious problem that affects physical, psychological, and social health. Early adolescents, particularly seventh-grade students, are in a vulnerable stage due to rapid developmental changes while still having limited knowledge of self-protection. A preliminary study at SMPN 10 Banjarmasin showed that most students did not adequately understand the definition and forms of sexual violence. Therefore, effective health education using media appropriate to adolescent characteristics is needed, one of which is self-protection-based audiovisual media. This study aimed to determine the effect of self-protection-based audiovisual health education media on the knowledge level of seventh-grade students about sexual violence at SMPN 10 Banjarmasin. This study used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental one-group pretest posttest design. The sample consisted of 61 seventh-grade students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire measuring knowledge of sexual violence before and after the intervention. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results showed an increase in students’ knowledge levels after receiving self-protection-based audiovisual health education, with a p-value < 0.001. Therefore, this media is recommended to be used as the health education methods in schools.

Abstract

Differences in socioeconomic and lifestyle characteristics between urban and rural populations may shape the distribution of CHD risk factors, but comparative evidence remains limited. This study examined factors associated with CHD among adults aged ≥35 years between urban and rural areas. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey, including 426,581 respondents aged ≥35 years. Data were analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariable logistic regression. CHD prevalence was higher in urban than rural areas (2.3% vs. 1.1%). In urban areas, CHD was significantly associated with older age (adjusted prevalence odds ratio [aPOR] for ≥75 years: 7.11; 95% CI: 5.30–9.55), hypertension (aPOR: 4.83; 95% CI: 4.27–5.47), diabetes mellitus (aPOR: 2.67; 95% CI: 2.26–3.17), low physical activity (aPOR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.25–1.76), sex (aPOR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.08–1.37), and alcohol consumption (aPOR: 0.53; 95% CI: 0.36–0.78). In rural areas, significant factors included older age (aPOR for ≥75 years: 2.68; 95% CI: 1.69–4.23), hypertension (aPOR: 5.66; 95% CI: 4.62–6.93), diabetes mellitus (aPOR: 3.57; 95% CI: 2.67–4.77), low physical activity (aPOR: 1.70; 95% CI: 1.22–2.37), smoking (aPOR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.42–0.73), sex (aPOR: 1.38; 95% CI: 1.10–1.73), and low vegetable consumption (aPOR: 2.57; 95% CI: 1.20–5.49). Hypertension was the strongest factor associated with CHD in both urban and rural areas. Targeted prevention strategies should prioritize hypertension control and context-specific healthy lifestyle interventions.
