Abstract

Vocabulary is the most crucial component for EFL learners in learning English because it is a key to acquiring and improving language skills. Nevertheless, to master vocabulary, the EFL learners need great effort. Therefore, this study aims to identify the effectiveness of spelling bee games in boosting vocabulary mastery of Gen Z students. This study employed a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The sample consisted of 32 students from class VII G, a show was selected purposively. The data collection involved pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using a parametric test (paired-sample test) assisted by SPSS 26. The result of this study finds that the significance of 2-tailed is lower than (<) 0.05, which reveals that spelling bee as a conventional game is still statistically effective in elevating Gen Z’ English vocabulary. Thus, conventional games can still be maintained to teach Gen Z students vocabulary, especially in teaching form (spelling) and use (constructing sentences).

Abstract

Validity testing of elementary students' character assessment instrument using CFA and Aiken’s V   Abstract: This study aims to develop and evaluate the validity and reliability of a character assessment instrument for elementary school students based on 18 character values established by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The instrument was tested on 258 students in Pandak District, Bantul, using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Aiken’s V. A purposive sampling technique was employed. The results showed that all items demonstrated high validity and excellent reliability, with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.902. The study also compared two scoring methods—with and without scaling—and found that scaling did not significantly affect the instrument’s validity. These findings support the effective use of the instrument without scaling. In conclusion, the developed instrument meets the criteria for validity and reliability and is suitable for accurately measuring students’ character. It is recommended that the instrument be further tested at different grade levels and analyzed using additional methods to enhance its quality.

Abstract

This study aims to estimate item parameters in Item Response Theory (IRT) using the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method in the context of Islamic schools in Pekalongan Regency/City, where small sample sizes pose a challenge. Unlike conventional methods such as maximum likelihood estimation, which tend to yield biased results with limited data, Bayesian MCMC incorporates prior knowledge and contextual information to improve estimation accuracy. Simulated datasets with varying sample sizes (30, 100, 300, 1000) and item numbers (10, 25, 30, 40) were used to compare the performance of Bayesian MCMC with traditional IRT methods. The results show that Bayesian MCMC produces more stable and accurate estimates, particularly in small-sample conditions. These findings suggest that Bayesian approaches are effective for psychometric analysis in Islamic education settings. The study concludes that Bayesian MCMC is a valuable method for improving the robustness of item parameter estimation in limited-data contexts.
