Abstract

This study aims to increase the students’ activity and the learning result in English in learning in the procedure text only reached 61.81. Used bottle is a tool that can be used as an appropriate English learning media to increase the students’ activity and learning result in learning the procedure text. This research method is quantitative that there is the influence of used bottle learning media on student learning Result in procedure text learning. This cycle is carried out in the form of an assessment process that consists of four stages, namely: (1) planning, (2) taking action, (3) observing, and (4) reflecting. This classroom action research was carried out in three cycles. The results of the study presented include the results of tests and non-tests. Student learning result increase the pre-cycle to the first cycle, the first cycle to the second cycle, and the second cycle to the third cycle. The average value before the cycle is 61.81 (low). The average value in the first cycle is 64.31 (medium) or an increase of 2.50, the average value in cycle II is 73.33 (medium) or has an increase of 9.02, and the average value in cycle III is 83.33 (high) or an increase of 10.00.Keywords: activity, used bottles, procedure text, learning result, learning media

Abstract

The reserach dealt with Acehnese proverbs with the aims of this study were to (1) toinvestigate kinds of translation strategies in translating the Acehnese proverbs into Bahasa Indonesia, (2) to investigate Acehnese proverbs realized in its translationinto Bahasa Indonesia, (3) to describe the translation strategies applied in the ways they are. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study were Acehnese proverbs and there were translated into Bahasa Indonesia by Hasjim M.K. at all (1977) taken from the book entitle “Peribahasa Aceh”. The results of this study showed that (1) There were three kinds of translation strategies in translating the Acehnese proverbs into Bahasa Indonesia namely exact equivalent, near equivalent, and literal meaning,  (2) In realization of Acehnese proverbs there were three ways in translating proverbs namely the words following the proverb could be introduced as the meaning of the proverb, it can be replaced with an equivalent local proverb, and its non-figurative meaning could be stated straight forwardly,  (3) In translating Acehnese proverbs, the translators need to know all aspects of cultural background of both languages.Key words: Translation, Strategies, Proverbs

Abstract

The objective of this experimental research were to find out whether: (1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Annotation strategy was higher than that taught by using Compensation strategy, (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-efficacy was higher than that low self-efficacy, and (3) there was  interaction between teaching strategies and self-efficacy on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade IX of SMP Negeri 18 Medan of 2016/2017 academic year. There were 52 students as samples of this research by applying cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this research were reading comprehension test and questionaire sheet. The data were analyzed using ANOVA at the level of significant α = 0.05. The result of the data analysis proved that:    (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Annotation strategy was higher than that taught by using Compensation strategy, with Fobs (66.73) ˃ Ftab (4.10),  (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-efficacy was higher than that with low self-efficacy, with Fobs (94.83) ˃ Ftab (4.10),  (3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and self-efficacy, with Fobs (11.29) ˃ Ftab (4.10).     Keywords: teaching strategies, self-efficacy, reading comprehension

Abstract

This study discusses about language use occurred by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The research is conducted by applying qualitative descriptive design. The subjects of this study are male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The data are the utterances produced by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. This research focuses on the show broadcasted on October 2016 by taking 4 videos randomly. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe kinds of the language use uttered by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show, (2) to elucidate language use represented by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show and (3) to describe reasons of different language use by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show in the ways they are. Additionally, the data are analyzed by applying theory of Interactive Model. The findings showed that the kinds of language use consist of 6 parts such as specialized vocabulary, expletives, empty adjectives, tag questions, polite form and telling joke or humor. The dominant language use uttered by male host is expletive, because male’s utterances are frequently stated in a negative connotation. There are common expressions generally referring to English expletives such as: bad language, profanity, swearwords, cursing, foul language, etc. On the other hand, female host utterances are found in specialized vocabulary as the most dominant because female host has more interest in talking family affairs, such as the education of children, clothes, cooking, and fashion, etc. Women also tended to talk about one thing related to the home and domestic activities. However, the representation of language use uttered by male and female are deficit, dominance and different. And the reason of this matter because of some factors such as psychology and different social status.Key words: Language use, Gender, Talk show

Abstract

This study examined 21 (twenty one) Internet memes taken from instagram wall of Meme Comic Indonesia (MCI). This studies applied Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis promoted by Van Leeuwen which particularly in this study was the merger between Three Dimensional of Fairclough and Visual Grammatical of Kress and Van Leeuwen. The results of this study revealed five kinds of stereotyped language about women which are women’s personality traits, women’s cooking domestics behaviour, women’s physical appearances, women’s teaching occupation and women’s driving motorcycle behaviour which considered as new kind of stereotype about women. It is also revealed that the process of realization of stereotyped language about women is by seeing the context of the features used by the creator of the internet memes. The reasons of using stereotyped language about women as humour can be seen as critics and warning attemptions by the creator of the internet memes.Key words: Stereotyped Language about Women, internet memes, Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis

Abstract

This study deals with the language maintenance of Mandailingnese in Tanjungbalai. It usesqualitative research design. It is conducted descriptively. This study aims to examine the types of language maintenance by Mandailingnese people in Tanjungbalai, find out the ways in maintaining the Mandailingnese language in Tanjungbalai and find out the reasons why the speakers of Mandailingnese people maintain their language in Tanjungbalai. The subjects were 10teenagers (boys and girls) of Mandailingnese. The use of instruments in this study were observation and interview. The observation were used to examine the types of language maintenance by Mandailingnese people in Tanjungbalai in order to describe the ways of Mandailingnese language maintenance. The interview was used to gain the reasons of Mandailingnese language maintainancein Tanjungbalai. The theories of Fasold, Fishman and Holmes are used in this study. The data were analyzed by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). There are four types of language maintenancein Tanjungbalai namely; low maintenance, medium maintenance, strong maintenance and extreme maintenance. There are two ways to maintain Mandailingnese language in Tanjungbalai namely; join the  community and teach the language to younger sister/brother. There are four reasons why they maintain their language namely; to express their identity as Mandailingnese people, to achieve self pride as Mandailingnese people, to tell certain issue and to creat closer relationship. Analysis of data clearly indicates that Mandailingnese language maintenance were done in Tanjungbalai.Keyword : language maintenance, reasons for language maintenance, Mandailingnese in Tanjungbalai

Abstract

Writing scientific writing is not essay and simple. Many writers often fail to communicate the idea or subject matter to the readers. The failure to communicate and deliver the idea is due to two factors- the lack mastery of the idea or subject matter itself and poor mastery of the language usage in scientific writing. In term of scientific writing, the language usages are typical ones and standard. This paper attempt to sum up and paraphrase the typical language of the scientific writing covering a) subject and action, b) cohesion and coherence, and c) concision and simplicity

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types of translation procedures in Patient Information Leaflets, to describe the realization of translation procedures and to explain about the reason of certain translation procedures realized in Patient Information Leaflets.The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study was translation unit that consists of words, phrases, clauses and sentences in Patient Information Leaflets in two versions, English as the source text and Bahasa Indonesia as the target text. The data was analyzed by using the theory of Translation Procedures based on (Vinay and Darbelnet ; 2000) to find the types, realization and the reason of certain translation procedures were used in Patient Information Leaflets. The results of the study were (1) there were eight types of translation procedures in patient information leflets namely borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalent, deletion and mixing procedures. (2)There were some realization of translation procedures in patient information leaflets , namely pure loanwords, naturalization, word for word translation, optional transposition, obligatory transposition, free modulation, obligatory modulation, equivalency, reduction, and combining procedures, and (3) there were seven reasons behind the realization of translation procedures namely the concept of the source text is unknown, preserving the verbatim meaning of the source text, unequivalent grammatical structures between source language and target language, naturalism in translation, clarity in translation, familiarity and maintaining the original terms of the source text.Key Words: Translation, Translation Procedures, Patient Information Leaflets, English and Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

This study deals with language attitude of Mandailingnese teenagers in Desa Sidojadi Kecamatan Bukit Malintang Kabupaten Mandailing Natal. It was aimed to investigate the language attitude of Mandailingnese teenagers in Desa Sidojadi Kecamatan Bukit Malintang Kabupaten Mandailing Natal, realization of language attitude and the reasons why they have the language attitude such the way it is. This study used qualitative method then the design was descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were the utterances of Mandailingnese teenagers in Desa Sidojadi Kecamatan Bukit Malintang Kabupaten Mandailing Natal. The source of data of this study was eleven Mandailingnese teenagers who lived in Desa Sidojadi Kecamatan Bukit Malintang Kabupaten Mandailing Natal. Observation and Interview were used to obtain the data. The data were analyzed by using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s Interactive Model (2014). Based on the data analysis, the Mandailingnese teenagers in Desa Sidojadi Kecamatan Bukit Malintang Kabupaten Mandailing Natal tend to be positive, they realized their language attitude in three domain, they are family domain, friendship domain, and religion domain. They have positive language attitude because they are loyal  to use Mandailing language, they feel proud to have Mandailing language, and they have awareness of language norm.Keywords: Language attitude, descriptive qualitative research, Miles, Huberman and Saldana’s Interactive Model
