Abstract

Students are able to convey their ideas, emotions, and feelings to the reader through their piece of writing. One area of pragmatics called deixis is also one of the writing aspects that students must be aware of in order provide meaning in writing. This article was aimed to found  how  the reason deixis used in the students™ writing descriptive text at the tenth grade MIA 2 high school Kemala Bhayangkari Medan. The data in the study is analyzed through descriptive qualitative. Three methods used include document analysis, observation, and interviews by the researcher. The result of this research showed five types of deixis, how the deixis used, and the reason deixis used in their writing using Levinson theory (1983). The results have revealed that the reason students used deixis are: to indicate a specific location, chronology events, to conveying a personal point of view, to incorporate cultural and social signifiers, and to create a strong and coherent connection. This study's results should help students learn more about how language works in real life and how words point to things. This will especially help them use the right words to improve their writing skills.

Abstract

This study examined the references used in Akshata Murthy's speech "Best Friend," focusing on the types of references and their realization. References in communication are very important and have a great role to play in conveying the speaker's message. This study provides a theoretical framework on reference in speech and emphasis the importance of reference in effective communication. The research methodology involves descriptive qualitative analysis, with data collection through browsing, watching, copying, selecting, and underlying relevant sentences. The research found that there are many anaphoric references in the speech, which play a role in creating cohesion and coherence. The results contribute to the field of linguistics by providing an understanding of the types of reference and their significance in communication. The analysis of Akshata Murthy's speech revealed the use of various types of references, including personal, comparative, and demonstrative references, to create cohesion and coherence. Anaphoric and cataphoric references were effectively used to connect ideas and maintain the flow of the speech. Recommendations for future research include comparing referencing in speeches by different speakers and exploring the impact of figures of speech on audience comprehension and engagement. This research also has practical implications in the understanding of reference in discourse. Overall, this research thoroughly examines the analysis of references in Akshata Murthy's speeches, shedding light on the types of references employed and their manifestations. The research underscores the importance of reference in effective communication and provides insights into the utilization of diverse reference types in establishing cohesion and coherence in speech.

Abstract

This study aims define which languages predominate in the Labuhanbatu Utara landscape, how texts are used, and why the texts are used. The study also suggests that societies, stakeholders and governments value local languages (expressions of cultural identity) and the Indonesian language as national identities to communicate formally or informally, especially in public settings. A descriptive qualitative design was used for this research. Bogdan and Biklen (1992) said that qualitative research is descriptive, i.e., it explains what is happening and what the data reveals. The research data was taken from the writings displayed on the nameboard, roadmap, mosque, store, pamphlet, billboard, etc.. installed in the data source in Labuhanbatu Utara. The study's data collection techniques included observation and documenting. According to the study's findings, the Indonesian language and local language have been used more and more in the past, especially in the landscape of government areas.
