Abstract

Students are able to convey their ideas, emotions, and feelings to the reader through their piece of writing. One area of pragmatics called deixis is also one of the writing aspects that students must be aware of in order provide meaning in writing. This article was aimed to found  how  the reason deixis used in the students’ writing descriptive text at the tenth grade MIA 2 high school Kemala Bhayangkari Medan. The data in the study is analyzed through descriptive qualitative. Three methods used include document analysis, observation, and interviews by the researcher. The result of this research showed five types of deixis, how the deixis used, and the reason deixis used in their writing using Levinson theory (1983). The results have revealed that the reason students used deixis are: to indicate a specific location, chronology events, to conveying a personal point of view, to incorporate cultural and social signifiers, and to create a strong and coherent connection. This study's results should help students learn more about how language works in real life and how words point to things. This will especially help them use the right words to improve their writing skills.

Abstract

This comprehensive study embarks on an exploration of incivility strategies manifested in YouTube comments on a political speech by Ron DeSantis, aiming to uncover the intricacies of digital communication and its influence on public discourse. By carefully analysing viewers' comments, this study employs a qualitative methodology to categorise incivility into five different strategies: negative incivility, sarcasm, baldness, positive incivility, and withheld politeness. This classification was crucial in identifying the dominant use of negative incivility, which emerged as the most common strategy among viewers, indicating a direct approach to criticism and disagreement. It was followed by sarcasm and bald on record strategies, which highlighted layered interactions that not only facilitated dissent, but also served to entertain and foster a sense of community among viewers. Although observed less frequently, positive incivility and withheld politeness strategies were also noted, contributing to the diverse spectrum of incivility in digital discourse. The research further delved into the motivations behind the impolite utterances, and revealed that the main drivers were expressing negative feelings towards the utterance or speaker, the desire to entertain, and the intention to advocate for change. In conclusion, this study highlights the complexity of online communication, especially in politically charged contexts, and emphasises the role of digital platforms in shaping public discourse. The study suggests that future research be extended to various digital platforms and cultural contexts to deepen the understanding of online interactions and their evolving nature, thus contributing significantly to the broader discourse on digital incivility and its implications for public dialogue.

Abstract

Subtitling strategies used by subtitlers in transferring the message of speaker’s utterances from one language to another language in the audiovisual landscape. The purpose of this study is to explain the reasons for employing subtitling strategies in the subtitle of Indah Asmigianti on OmeTV. It adopted a descriptive qualitative method. The study focuses on understanding the reasons behind the utilization of subtitling strategies in the subtitles of Indah Asmigianti's YouTube channel. The data were taken from utterances of Indah Amigianti and four strangers. The source of data was taken from Indah Asmigianti’s YouTube channel which was uploaded on January 02, 2023, with the title “Korean People Got Shocked When I Spoke Their Language” complete with its subtitle. The analysis of subtitling strategies in Indah Asmigianti's conversations based on Dries's theory (1995), reveals that there were two main reasons behind the use of subtitles, namely traditions and the strategies accustomed for both the source and target viewers. Notably, historical circumstances did not emerge as a significant factor in this particular research. An intriguing discovery in this study was the influence of localization in the subtitling process. This newfound insight contributes to a deeper understanding of subtitling complexities, particularly as a form of cultural translation in the digital landscape.
