Abstract

This study investigates how Indonesian K-pop fans interact in online discourse utilising politeness techniques and assessment expressions. Data were obtained using a qualitative approach with virtual ethnography, including questionnaires, social media observations, and textual analysis. Politeness Theory (Brown & Levinson, 1987) examines how fans preserve group cohesion and resolve problems, whereas Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005) investigates how emotions, judgements, and evaluations influence fan interactions. The data show that supporters utilise positive politeness to foster unity, negative politeness to diffuse disagreements, and direct or indirect expressions in intense debates. Meanwhile, appraisal analysis reveals that fandom discourse incorporates emotional responses, idol evaluations, and aesthetic enjoyment. These findings demonstrate how K-pop fandom operates as a dynamic linguistic arena, with politeness and assessment tactics influencing digital discourse and cultural identity construction.

Abstract

This study investigates English course teachers' perspectives on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, specifically ChatGPT, in English Language Teaching (ELT) within the informal education sector in Medan, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected from 17 teachers through questionnaires to explore their experiences, perceived benefits, and challenges associated with AI integration. The findings reveal that 64.29% of teachers recognized AI's potential to streamline lesson planning and generate ideas, while 42.86% appreciated its ability to personalize instruction. Additionally, 14.29% highlighted its role in enhancing language skill practice. However, significant concerns emerged, with 50% of teachers fearing reduced teacher-student interaction and 42.86% worrying about AI undermining traditional teaching values. Ethical issues, including potential bias (14.29%) and misinformation (7.14%), were also noted. The study concludes that while AI offers transformative opportunities in ELT, its integration must be supported by teacher training, resource allocation, and a balanced approach to preserve human-centered teaching principles. These findings provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers aiming to harness the potential of AI in language education.

Abstract

As a first-year PhD student, I was inspired by my lecturers to embark on this research to explore self translation with the aid of AI, specifically ChatGPT by OpenAI. This study investigates the potential benefits and challenges of using AI to translate Christian praise and worship songs between Bahasa Indonesia and English. By focusing on linguistic accuracy, cultural adaptation, and artistic integrity, using a qualitative case study approach, I evaluated the efficacy of ChatGPT in enhancing the quality and efficiency of self translation in worship music. My research involved translating five songs—two from English to Indonesian, two from Indonesian to English, and one from Batak to English—using an iterative process that combined ChatGPT's outputs with Google Translate and human expertise. The findings reveal that while ChatGPT can effectively bridge linguistic gaps and maintain the original compositions' integrity, human involvement remains crucial for ensuring linguistic, cultural, and contextual accuracy. This study underscores the potential of AI as a valuable tool in the self-translation of worship songs, highlighting the importance of human-AI collaboration.

Abstract

For many years, English has been a core subject in the National Examination (UN) across all levels of education, including Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High School. In 2020, the Indonesian Ministry of Education introduced a new policy that replaced the UN with the National Assessment, which aims to evaluate students' proficiency in literacy and numeracy skills. However, notably, the government has excluded English from the subjects assessed at the Junior High School level. Consequently, this study seeks to explore the perceptions of students and teachers regarding the omission of the English subject from the National Assessment. The research involved 3 English teachers and 43 students from a junior high school in Tebing Tinggi, North Sumatra, who had previously participated in the new assessment format. Data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews. Specifically, the questionnaire data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while the interview data underwent analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, as outlined by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings reveal that both students and teachers believe that English should be reinstated in the National Assessment. Additionally, the exclusion of English elicits contrasting sentiments; while the majority of students express dissatisfaction, the teachers predominantly feel a sense of relief. Ultimately, this article discusses several considerations concerning the implementation of the National Assessment.

Abstract

This study examines Business English acquisition patterns among employees at Pelindo, Indonesia's largest port operator, focusing on workplace communication challenges in an increasingly globalized maritime industry. Through qualitative case study methodology, the research surveyed 50 employees across various divisions using a mixed-method questionnaire combining Likert-scale assessments and open-ended responses. Results indicate high employee motivation for Business English acquisition (mean 3.50) driven by professional demands, yet reveal significant challenges in legal terminology comprehension (mean 2.95) and complex business document creation (mean 3.20). The study found that technology integration in learning processes (mean 3.80) and case-study approaches (mean 3.50) significantly enhance Business English acquisition effectiveness. These findings contribute to understanding specialized language acquisition in state-owned enterprises, particularly in maritime logistics contexts, and suggest the need for integrated learning approaches combining formal instruction with authentic business communication practice. The research implications are particularly relevant for developing targeted language training programs in international port operations contexts.
