Abstract

This article discusses Amina Wadud’s gender equality argument in interpreting the verse of jilbab in QS. al-Aḥzab [33]: 59. This is based on the historical fact that the verse is always associated with the command for women to veil and distinguish between free and enslaved person women during the jahiliyah period. Using a descriptive-analytical qualitative method with Amina Wadud’s gender analysis approach, this article concludes that the understanding of QS. al-Aḥzab [33]: 59 warns Muslims always to control themselves, guard and protect women, and not neglect the commandments of Allah. From the perspective of Amina Wadud’s progressive interpretation, QS. al-Aḥzab [33]: 59, which is initially interpreted as women getting orders to veil and not dress openly as self-protection from sexual harassment from the opposite sex, develops to get protection from all kinds of dangers that befall it. This verse instructs the prohibition of harming or harassing women because, in the public sphere, they have a strategic position to foster aspects of community morality. Changes supported by modern currents show that the opportunity for women’s contribution has developed relatively high, so the umbrella of protection for women has become a significant thing. This is in line with Pasal 28G Ayat (1) UUD 1945, which mandates that the state guarantee the enjoyment of rights without discrimination and gender differences. Thus, Amina Wadud’s argument indicates that protection under any conditions for women must be established to have a positive impact on the progress of sexually-based morals in society and eliminate the culture of objectification attached to women.

Abstract

The position of Tarjumān al-Mustafīd by Abdurrauf al-Singkili as a precedent for interpretive literature in Indonesia has ontological problems. Accusations circulated that Tarjumān al-Mustafīd was just a translated copy of al-Baiḍāwi's commentary on Anwār al-Tanzīl wa Asrār al-Ta'wīl. In comparison, other groups consider it a translation of Tafsīr Jalālayn. These two claims seem to cast doubt on Tarjumān Al-Mustafīd as an authentic interpretation work. Every work of interpretation always involves the subjectivity of the interpreter. Through an analysis of the epistemology of interpretation, this research reveals the genealogy, method, and validity of al-Singkili's interpretation in Tarjumān al-Mustafīd. The findings of this research highlight three essential aspects: First, Tarjumān al-Mustafīd is not merely the result of translation (vernacularization) of one particular interpretation as has been alleged so far. Several other tafsir, such as Tafsīr Jalālayn and Tafsīr al-Khāzin, also influenced the presentation pattern of Tarjumān al-Mustafīd. Second, al-Singkili's interpretive method is similar to al-Baiḍāwi but not wholly the same. Al-Singkili also adopted the pattern of writing the Indonesian turath books, which use keywords such as fāidah, tanbīh, the word mufasir, and others. Third, Tarjumān al-Mustafīd qualifies as a valid or authentic interpretation of consistency and correspondence. This research offers a novel contribution by positioning Tarjumān al-Mustafīd as a unique synthesis of classical Islamic exegesis and the scholarly tradition of the Nusantara, demonstrating its originality as an interpretive work that bridges global Islamic scholarship with localized epistemological frameworks.

Abstract

This study re-examines the classical interpretations of nushūz and ḍaraba found in QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:34, 128 and explores their relevance to domestic violence issues in Indonesia. The research method that was employed is a literature study that explores the words nushūz and wadribū (ḍaraba: to hit) in QS. An-Nisā'[4]:34 and 128 through the commentaries of al-Ṭabarī, al- Qurṭubī, and Ibn Kathīr from the perspective of gender equality. The findings indicate that al-Ṭabarī views nushūz as a wife’s arrogance, al-Qurṭubī interprets it as animosity between spouses, and Ibn Kathīr regards it as the wife neglecting her obligations. In QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:128, nushūz is understood as the husband’s negligence or withdrawal from his wife. Meanwhile, waḍribūhunna in QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:34 is interpreted by al-Ṭabarī as a non-harmful physical measure, by al-Qurṭubī as a light, corrective action, and by Ibn Kathīr as a blow that causes no injury. Although these classical interpretations often depict the wife as the erring party and the husband as being in the right—a stance that risks perpetuating unequal power dynamics—the Qur’an itself underscores the principle of equality between men and women. In this light, nushūz should apply to both spouses, reflecting the possibility that either partner could be at fault. Al-Qurṭubī’s understanding of nushūz as mutual hatred is more compatible with notions of gender equity. Additionally, interpreting ḍaraba as “offering guidance” or “providing a positive example” is more appropriate than viewing it as a physical strike, which can escalate into domestic violence. This reinterpretation, therefore, holds promise for fostering more equitable marital relationships in contemporary society.

Abstract

The history of the writing of Qur’anic tafsir in Indonesia is closely tied to the works of Ulama within the Pesantren. The development of Qur’anic tafsir writing in the Pesantren environment has been highly dynamic, characterized by variations in appearance, writing style, language, script, interpretative style, and approach. One distinctive feature of tafsir works produced within the Pesantren is exemplified by the Tafsir Sūrah Yāsīn, authored by KH Bisri Mustafa from Pesantren Raudlotut Thalibin Rembang, Central Java. This work showcases a unique interpretation, particularly in its approach to natural science verses. Adopting the integration model introduced by Ian G. Barbour, it can be argued that KH Bisri Mustafa’s interpretation of natural verses aligns with the category of natural theology. This perspective asserts that awareness of God can be discerned through natural phenomena, where the existence of God is reflected in the design of nature. The intricate design of nature fosters awareness of God’s presence and existence. This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach to examine KH Bisri Mustafa’s interpretation of scientific verses in surah Yāsīn. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on integrating religion and science, particularly within the context of Qur’anic tafsir in Pesantren circles.

Abstract

This research examines the scientific interpretation of agricultural verses in the Ministry of Religion’s interpretation. The Ministry of Religion’s scientific interpretation work responds to efforts to integrate science and the Qur’an. It is motivated by modern social life characterized by advances in science and technology. Scientific interpretation is used in interpreting kauniyah verses by involving scientific tools. The meaning revealed results from a dialectical process between the Qur’an and scientific disciplines or modern science. This qualitative-descriptive research seeks to trace and classify the interpretation of agricultural verses in the Ministry of Religion’s scientific interpretation works. The findings show that the Ministry of Religion’s scientific interpretation of agricultural verses includes several aspects, such as the nature of human creation as managers of the earth, livelihoods, land use, use of plants for human life, water resources, and preventing water crises. The Ministry of Religion’s scientific interpretation of these agricultural verses responds to contemporary environmental crises and global warming phenomena. This interpretation also provides insight into ecological preservation by farming as a provider of life in the universe. Such environmental preservation can mitigate global crises caused by rapid industrial and technological life.

Abstract

This study explored the concept of Islamic revival proposed by KH. Ahmad Sanusi, a traditional Islamic scholar, in his Quranic exegesis Tamshiyyah al-Muslimīn in the early 20th century. Moreover, this research investigated the narratives of Islamic revival, and the decline of Muslims explained in the exegesis. The study employed a qualitative approach based on library research to achieve its objectives. Additionally, content analysis was utilized to enhance the depth of the research analysis.  The findings reveal that Sanusi's Islamic revival concept is rooted in the Qur’an, social life, and spirituality. Regarding the Qur’an, Sanusi emphasized the importance of understanding the Quran as a source of guidance for Muslims in all aspects of life. He criticized both traditional and modernist scholars for their misinterpretation of the Quran. Concerning social life, Sanusi highlighted the significance of mastering various fields of knowledge, promoting unity among Muslims, and engaging in deliberation based on equality. In terms of spirituality, Sanusi responded to the Sufi concepts and practices that some scholars considered deviant at that time. He argued that Sufism did not hinder Muslims from achieving progress in life. Sanusi's thoughts on Sufism were influenced by al-Ghazali's concepts, which were widely spread in the Indonesian Muslim community. This study contributes to the understanding of Islamic revival from the perspective of a traditional scholar who accommodates local culture and traditions without compromising the fundamental message of Islam.

Abstract

This article explores the contextual meaning of jilbāb and khimār in the Qur’an by integrating Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics and the classical framework of ‘ulūm al-Qur’ān (the sciences of Qur’anic interpretation). The study addresses the central problem of how verses on jilbāb (Q.S. al-Aḥzāb [33]: 59) and khimār (Q.S. an-Nūr [24]: 31) can be interpreted through the fusion of horizons between text and reader, especially in light of contemporary gender and modesty discourses. Using descriptive-analytical library research, this article draws from primary sources—the Qur’an and Gadamer’s philosophical works—alongside secondary references on tafsir and hermeneutics. The findings reveal that jilbāb and khimār are best understood as protective-preventive measures rooted in both historical context and ethical intentions. Rather than prescribing fixed models of clothing, the Qur’anic injunctions emphasize dignity, modesty, and the social protection of women. By applying Gadamer’s key concepts—effective history (Wirkungsgeschichte), pre-understanding (Vorverständnis), and fusion of horizons (Horizontverschmelzung)—the study demonstrates how traditional interpretations may evolve through dialog with present-day realities. This approach contributes to the ongoing discourse on gender, religious norms, and the role of interpretation in Islamic scholarship.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Islam and the state from the perspective of Sayyid Qutb, with a focus on his interpretation of political governance in Islam. Sayyid Qutb is renowned for advocating a symbiotic theory, which posits that religion and the state are mutually dependent. In this framework, Islam requires the support of the state to effectively implement its teachings, while the state needs Islam to provide moral and ethical guidance. Qutb’s perspective serves as a middle path between two opposing paradigms: the integralist approach, which fully merges religion and politics, and the secularist approach, which entirely separates them. His ideas have significantly influenced both modernist and neo-modernist movements within Islamic political thought. By analyzing Qutb’s writings and interpretations, this study underscores the continuing relevance of his ideas in contemporary debates on the role of Islam in governance. The findings suggest that his symbiotic model provides a compelling framework for understanding the dynamic interaction between religion and politics in Islamic societies. Practically, this research offers insights for policymakers and scholars regarding the integration of Islamic values into modern governance systems. Future studies could further explore the implications of this paradigm across diverse sociopolitical contexts, particularly in Muslim-majority countries.

Abstract

Despite its health hazards and public debate, the liquor industry continues to innovate and grow. Indonesia seeks to balance economic investment and public safety regarding the liquor industry based on local culture and wisdom. This article aims to demonstrate the Qur'an’s normative stance on liquor through al-Qurṭubī’s legal exegesis in considering the profit and loss of liquor investment in Indonesia. The article employs a qualitative research method by utilising a semantic and content analysis approach to explore the discussion topic. The investigation focuses on the interpretation of sakar and khamar through the explanations outlined in the tafsir al- Qurṭubī, al-Jāmi' li Ahkām al- Qur'ān volumes 1, 3, 6, and 17, in addition to various relevant academic works. The research shows that liquor is harmful to consumers and not in line with Indonesian culture in general for the safety of Indonesia's generations. This article contributes to the science of Qur'anic exegesis integrated with social science and public policy that highlights the importance of philosophical, sociological, and human rights considerations in economic and public health policies.
