Abstract

Qur’anic literacy remains a fundamental component of Islamic education and an essential competency for students in Islamic higher education institutions. However, variations in students’ Qur’anic reading abilities continue to present challenges for universities seeking to strengthen both academic and religious competencies. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Qur’anic literacy development programs implemented by Ma’had Al-Jami’ah at IAIN Palopo. Employing a mixed-methods approach with a convergent descriptive design, the study involved 68 students from the Islamic Educational Management Study Program selected through proportional sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data analysis techniques. The findings reveal that the Qur’anic literacy development programs are implemented through three integrated components: Tahsinul Qira’ah courses, Character Building Training (CBT), and special mentoring sessions for students requiring additional support. Students generally perceived the programs positively, with the largest proportion of respondents (39.71%) categorizing the programs as highly effective. Furthermore, learning achievement data showed that the dominant grade in the Tahsinul Qira’ah course was B+ across both student cohorts, indicating satisfactory academic performance. The integration of perceptual and achievement-based evidence suggests that the programs are effective in strengthening students’ Qur’anic literacy. This study contributes to Islamic educational evaluation by proposing a comprehensive assessment framework that combines students’ perceptions and learning outcomes as complementary indicators of program effectiveness. The findings highlight the strategic role of Ma’had Al-Jami’ah in fostering religious competencies and supporting holistic student development within Islamic higher education.

Abstract

Indonesia’s religious and cultural diversity presents both opportunities and challenges for Islamic education in fostering social cohesion, tolerance, and mutual respect. In recent years, increasing concerns regarding religious intolerance, identity-based polarization, and exclusivist interpretations of religion have highlighted the need for inclusive educational approaches grounded in Islamic values. This study aims to revisit Abdurrahman Wahid’s concept of pluralism and examine its implications for inclusive Islamic education in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study utilizes philosophical and historical approaches to analyze Abdurrahman Wahid’s writings and relevant scholarly literature. The findings reveal that Gus Dur’s concept of pluralism is constructed upon three major pillars: Islamic universalism, Islamic cosmopolitanism, and the indigenization of Islam. These concepts collectively promote respect for human dignity, openness to intercultural dialogue, and the harmonious integration of Islamic teachings with local cultural traditions. The study further demonstrates that Gus Dur’s pluralistic thought provides a strong conceptual foundation for inclusive Islamic education by emphasizing tolerance, mutual understanding, social justice, and democratic values while maintaining commitment to Islamic principles. Unlike previous studies that primarily focus on the political or theological dimensions of Gus Dur’s thought, this article highlights its educational significance in addressing contemporary challenges related to diversity and social cohesion. The study concludes that Abdurrahman Wahid’s pluralistic vision remains highly relevant for strengthening inclusive, moderate, and socially responsive Islamic education in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

Faith formation constitutes a central objective of Islamic Religious Education, particularly at the elementary school level where students begin to develop their religious understanding and identity. Among the instructional approaches used to transmit Islamic values, prophetic narratives occupy a significant position because they provide concrete examples through which abstract theological concepts can be understood. This study aims to explore the representation of tawhid values in prophetic narratives contained in Islamic Religious Education textbooks and to examine their educational significance for faith formation. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study uses content analysis to investigate narratives of the prophets presented in fourth-grade Islamic Religious Education textbooks. The analysis focuses on identifying and interpreting the representation of three major dimensions of tawhid: tawhid al-rububiyyah, tawhid al-uluhiyyah, and tawhid al-asma’ wa al-sifat. The findings reveal that prophetic narratives function not only as historical accounts but also as pedagogical instruments for transmitting faith values. The stories consistently represent Allah’s sovereignty, exclusive worship of Allah, and belief in Allah’s names and attributes through meaningful narrative experiences that are accessible to young learners. Furthermore, the narratives integrate theological teachings with moral virtues such as patience, honesty, perseverance, responsibility, and trust in Allah, thereby supporting both faith formation and character development. This study contributes to Islamic educational scholarship by repositioning prophetic narratives as pedagogical resources for tawhid education rather than merely moral or historical stories. The findings highlight the strategic role of Islamic Religious Education textbooks in facilitating value internalization, religious socialization, and the development of students’ faith-oriented identities.

Abstract

The determination of lineage (nasab) for children born out of wedlock remains a contested issue in Islamic family law, particularly regarding the admissibility of DNA testing as legal evidence. This study examines the legal position of DNA testing in determining the lineage of children born out of wedlock and analyzes its implications from the perspective of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. This study employed normative legal research with descriptive-analytical characteristics using conceptual, statutory, and comparative approaches. Data were collected through library research and analyzed qualitatively using inductive-deductive reasoning. The findings reveal that DNA testing possesses strong scientific validity in establishing biological relationships and may function as corroborative evidence in lineage determination. However, within Islamic law, DNA testing cannot independently establish nasab shar‘i, as legal lineage remains contingent upon lawful marriage. From the perspective of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, DNA testing supports the realization of ḥifẓ al-nasl (protection of lineage), ḥifẓ al-nafs (protection of life), and ḥifẓ al-‘irḍ (protection of dignity) by ensuring biological certainty, protecting children’s rights, reducing social stigma, and strengthening parental responsibility. Nevertheless, its application also presents potential risks, including genetic data misuse, privacy violations, and family conflict. This study concludes that the benefits of DNA testing outweigh its potential harms, provided that its implementation remains limited, legally regulated, and accompanied by strict protection of personal genetic data. Therefore, DNA testing should be positioned as a modern evidentiary instrument that supports the realization of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah without replacing the legal requirements of lineage recognized in Islamic law.

Abstract

Religious conversion in Islam extends beyond the formal declaration of faith and involves a continuous process of religious learning and spiritual adaptation. Among the various dimensions of post-conversion religious development, engagement with the Qur’an occupies a central role in strengthening faith and deepening religious understanding. This study aims to examine the religious motivations that encourage Muslim converts to learn the Qur’an and to explore their experiences of Qur’anic engagement in a rural Indonesian context. Employing a qualitative field research design, the study was conducted in Padang Raya Village, Seko District, North Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving Muslim converts residing in the village. The findings reveal that learning the Qur’an constitutes a significant aspect of the post-conversion journey of Muslim converts. Religious motivation was shaped by both external and internal factors, particularly family support, marital relationships, and personal spiritual aspirations. The study further demonstrates that engagement with the Qur’an extends beyond learning recitation skills and encompasses efforts to understand, internalize, and practice Islamic teachings in everyday life. Participants reported various spiritual benefits derived from Qur’anic learning, including emotional comfort, inner peace, strengthened faith, and increased religious commitment. Despite limited access to formal religious education in this geographically remote area, converts exhibited strong enthusiasm for participating in Qur’anic learning activities. This study contributes to the literature on conversion and Qur’anic engagement by highlighting the role of the Qur’an as a source of religious motivation, spiritual development, and faith sustainability among Muslim converts in rural Indonesia.

Abstract

Access to justice in Indonesia’s Religious Courts remains structurally constrained, particularly for low-income litigants who frequently navigate divorce, child custody, and inheritance disputes without adequate legal representation. Despite a comprehensive normative framework grounded in Articles 27(1) and 28D (1) of the 1945 Constitution, Law Number 16 of 2011 on Legal Aid, Law Number 50 of 2009 on Religious Courts, and Supreme Court Regulation Number 1 of 2014 concerning Legal Aid Posts (Posbakum), the substantive realization of the constitutional right to equality before the law remains limited in practice. This study examines the constitutional urgency of pro bono legal aid provision in Religious Courts and analyzes how the collective responsibility of law enforcement officers should be conceptualized to ensure its effective implementation. This study employed a normative juridical method using statute and conceptual approaches, supported by primary legal materials, regulatory documents, and scholarly literature. The findings reveal three main points. First, pro bono legal aid constitutes a constitutional obligation rather than a discretionary service, as substantive equality before the law requires the removal of economic, geographic, and informational barriers to justice. Second, the implementation gap in Religious Courts is primarily caused by fragmented institutional responsibility, limited budget allocation, uneven distribution of accredited legal aid institutions, and weak accountability mechanisms. Third, effective legal aid provision requires an integrated collective responsibility framework involving judges, advocates, legal aid institutions, and court registrars as interdependent actors in ensuring access to justice. This study contributes to the literature by reframing pro bono legal aid in Religious Courts as a constitutionally mandated collective responsibility essential to fulfilling equality before the law.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed students’ learning environments and social interactions, creating both opportunities and challenges in contemporary education. While digital technology offers substantial benefits for communication and learning, its uncontrolled use also exposes students to various risks, including excessive smartphone dependency, reduced academic focus, social media addiction, exposure to harmful online content, and behavioral changes. This study aims to examine the roles of parents and Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in protecting students from the negative impacts of technology at SMP Negeri 4 Ponrang, Indonesia, and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing these efforts. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving parents, Islamic Education teachers, and students. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that parents function as primary digital gatekeepers through supervision, communication, guidance, and moral education. Meanwhile, Islamic Education teachers serve as moral guardians by strengthening students’ ethical awareness through religious instruction, behavioral supervision, and counseling. The study also found that effective digital risk prevention requires strong collaboration between family and school. Supporting factors include students’ self-awareness, family support, positive social environments, and teacher involvement, while inhibiting factors include rapid technological development, easy internet access, environmental influence, and limited parental supervision. This study highlights the importance of integrating digital literacy, digital ethics, and Islamic character education to strengthen students’ moral resilience in navigating contemporary digital challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the developments and research trends in psycholinguistics within Arabic language learning through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The review examines scholarly publications related to Arabic language acquisition, cognitive processes, affective factors, instructional strategies, social learning environments, and technological integration in Arabic language education. Data were collected from relevant academic publications and analyzed using thematic synthesis to identify publication characteristics, dominant research themes, and their implications for Arabic language learning development. The findings reveal that psycholinguistic research in Arabic language learning has developed into an increasingly dynamic and interdisciplinary field. The dominant themes identified include language acquisition, cognitive processing, learning theories, affective factors, social environment, and communicative instructional strategies. The review indicates that successful Arabic language learning is not solely determined by vocabulary mastery and grammatical competence but is also strongly influenced by learners’ cognitive readiness, emotional conditions, social interactions, and opportunities for meaningful communication. Furthermore, recent research trends demonstrate growing attention to learner-centered approaches, communicative learning, psychologically supportive environments, and technology-enhanced instruction. This study highlights the importance of designing adaptive and integrated Arabic language learning that accommodates learners’ cognitive, affective, and social characteristics. Future studies are recommended to strengthen empirical evidence through experimental, quantitative, mixed-method, and longitudinal research designs to examine the influence of psycholinguistic factors on Arabic language learning outcomes more comprehensively

Abstract

This study examines prewedding practices as a form of premarital behavior in Tarapung Raya Village, South Tapanuli Regency, and analyzes their ethical implications through the perspective of Tafsir Al-Misbah on QS. Al-Isra’ verse 32. This study addresses an important gap in existing scholarship, as previous studies have largely discussed prewedding practices from general Islamic legal perspectives, while limited attention has been given to empirical analysis grounded in Qur’anic ethics, particularly in rural Muslim communities. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving couples who conducted prewedding photography, religious leaders, and community figures. The findings reveal that prewedding photography has become increasingly normalized as part of contemporary wedding culture, influenced by modernization, digital visual culture, and changing social trends. The practice is no longer viewed merely as wedding documentation but also as a medium for romantic expression, emotional intimacy, and social prestige. The findings further indicate that prewedding sessions commonly involve physical interactions such as holding hands, hugging, close body positioning, and forehead kissing between unmarried couples. From the perspective of Tafsir Al-Misbah on QS. Al-Isra’ verse 32, such interactions may be categorized as behaviors approaching zina (muqaddimat al-zina) because they potentially cross Islamic ethical boundaries concerning modesty, physical interaction, and moral restraint. The study demonstrates that the ethical evaluation of prewedding practices cannot be based solely on social normalization or cultural acceptance. Instead, such practices must be assessed through Islamic preventive ethics that emphasize dignity, self-control, and the avoidance of behaviors potentially leading to moral transgression. This study contributes to contemporary Islamic studies by highlighting the tension between modern visual culture and Islamic morality, while offering a Qur’anic ethical framework for critically evaluating emerging social practices in Muslim communities.

Abstract

This study examines the Mappanonno ritual among the Bugis Muslim community in Bone, Indonesia, with a focus on understanding its ritual process, cultural meanings, and religious dimensions. Specifically, this study explores how Mappanonno reflects expressions of gratitude, ancestral tradition, and religious belief within the lived experiences of the local community. This study employed a qualitative field research design using a phenomenological approach. The research was conducted in Lea Village, Tellu Siattinge District, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving traditional leaders, religious figures, community elders, and local residents. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Mappanonno consists of four main stages: preparation of ritual offerings, communal prayer and Qur’anic recitation, symbolic offering at the river, and communal gathering. The ritual carries multidimensional meanings for the community, functioning as an expression of gratitude to Allah, a means of preserving ancestral heritage, and a spiritual practice associated with protection from misfortune (pattola bala). The study also finds that Islamic elements are strongly embedded in the ritual through collective prayers and the recitation of selected Qur’anic chapters such as al-Fatihah, al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, and an-Nas. This study concludes that Mappanonno represents a meaningful intersection of gratitude, ancestral tradition, and religious belief, reflecting the dynamic integration of Islam and local culture in Bugis Muslim society.
