Abstract

In general there are four types of language varieties in sociolinguistic study; they are slang, register, jargon, and argot. Jargon is one of language varieties in sociolinguistics. Jargon is the feature of language variety which is used for specific field and just understood by them who stand on those specific fields, but it is not secret. The forms of jargon are abbreviation, acronymn, word, and phrase. This research aimed to know the jargon used in United Indonesia Magazine. In this study, the researcher applied the descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data is several articles publised in the United Indonesia Magazine. The researcher employed a document analysis technique to collect the research data. This technique is carried out by observing and determining the articles which contains Jargon. The result of this research found 8 sport jargons used in the United Indonesia Magazine. From the 8 data, four jargon was in the form of words and four jargon in the form of phrases. This research found some functions of jargon that were giving a person a sense of belonging to a specific group, making it easier for a person to communicate with their group, and as an effective signal for identification.

Abstract

The study aims to examine to what extent a role-play method can increase students’ participation in English learning. Classroom Action Research (CAR) is conducted to achieve the purpose. Research data are collected through observation to look at students’ participation and questionnaires that are distributed throughout 3 cycles of role-play implementation. The study shows that the role-play method can be enacted to improve students’ participation in learning English. There is also an increase in students’ participation during the three cycles of role-play enactment which proves that this method has a prominent potential in enhancing students’ English learning engagement.

Abstract

Literacy movement serves a vital role to support, facilitate, and enhance literacy skills that is crucial to every human being overall development including character, social, and professional development. This comparative study on literacy movement in Indonesia and Spain analyze how these nations  promote literacy movement to accelerate students’ literacy skills and how the literacy movement implemented. Likewise, this study adopts a case study in which the data were derieved from observation protocol, document analysis, questionnaies, and interview transcripts. The data analysis revealed that Indonesia through Gerakan Literasi Nasional (GLN) promotes the literacy by creating literacy culture in educational ecosystem start in family, school, and society as a mean of long-life learning to improve life quality whereas the Ministry of Education Culture and Sport in Spain created a program called Act on The Improvement of the Quality of Education (LOMCE in Spanish) to promote and create a literate environment and improve educational result. As it further investigated, the most noticeable comparison between the practice of literacy movement in Indonesia and Spain is on the equality of literacy movement in every region. In Spain, the literacy movement is equally well-established in every region whereas the equality of literacy movement in Indonesia region is still not equal yet. In this matter, the implementation of literacy movement should be supported by qualified educators, appropriate materials, adequate infrastructure, and effective literacy policies in order to effectively promote the students’ literacy skills and development.

Abstract

The majority of students in higher education find it challenging to understand cultural differences and communicate in English. In reality, students' enthusiasm wanes as a result of distractions like poor internet connections and challenging coursework. Using knowledge-sharing techniques in this situation is a solution to overcoming these challenges. The purpose of this study is to describe how students feel about using knowledge-sharing techniques in an online intercultural communication course. Three English Department students who participated in the research's Knowledge-sharing Practice in Intercultural Communication Learning at a university in Bogor were the main subjects of the study. Students in intercultural communication classes at higher education institutions range in age from 20 to 22 and academic standing. Focus groups discussion, interviews, and other forms of narrative inquiry were used in this qualitative study. This study discovered that implementing knowledge-sharing practices in online learning aids students in removing confusion from Intercultural communication classes, encourages higher education students to voice their opinions, aids higher education students in showing respect for cultural differences, stimulates students to think critically, encourages students to participate in the discussion, and inspires students to study abroad, but it is still challenging for them.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating how a fiction text unravels racism and reflects the social structure in real life. The intertwining between fiction and reality makes this a fruitful space to deconstruct the practices of racism as a part of post-colonial activism. The study uses sociology-based literary criticism to deconstruct the portrayal of racism in The Kite Runner. Findings demonstrate that racism as illustrated in the novel can be made visible in pedagogical practices and inspire language learners not to mimic them in their lives.

Abstract

This study reports on secondary students’ reflection towards multimodal reading tasks through virtual digital platform learning. It investigates students’ learning outcomes after studying a multimodal reading involving through five-step learning activities, such as lesson preparation to examine the lesson-planning process, including the use of supplementary materials, and the meaningfulness of activities, scaffolding/modeling to focus on making explicit and direct links between past learning related to the students’ schemata and new concepts, comprehensible input to consider adjusting teacher modeling multimodal reading to enhance comprehension, practice and application  and review and assessment to assess students’ learning, and provided feedback to students on their output The data were collected during the 2nd academic term (January-May 2020). The research was conducted in the Senior High School in Indonesia in which thirty five students (20 females and 15 males)  participated in this study. The data were analyzed by using Braun Clark’s (2006) thematic analysis.  The findings show that encountered some benefits from this digital platform learning such as the availability of myriad sources online which the students could access at their flexible and convenience time. Additionally, Student teachers’ autonomy, agency, engagement, confidence, skill-set, and the ability to collaborate through online discussion are the important point that they experienced during their learning reading digital texts. Finally, the short time of the studies included in exploration might also indicate the strong need for further longitudinal research on the topic.

Abstract

YouTube is a mobile application and social network that are integrated with various platforms and other media such as blogs or presentation materials. Developing a learning community through YouTube makes students experience online learning in an interesting way. The purpose of this study was to find out students' perception in learning English through online learning during Covid-19 pandemic. The participants selected for this research were five students from one of the universities in Bogor, Indonesia. This study uses qualitative research design. The results of this study indicate that YouTube is very helpful in online learning for students and this media can be accessed during online learning because it provides many educational videos to learn English and other skills.  However, some difficulties were also found in this study.  YouTube is also considered to add education fees in terms of connection. Students, in addition, stated that they had problem with their connection i.e., unstable signals and the ability to understand the video. This activity aims to summarize responses on the use of YouTube as a media of online learning during Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

There are many universities holding an exchange program for helping students improve their English skill and create identity shift. This research aims to know what identity shift students’ study abroad experience and to know the effects of identity shift on students’ study abroad. The researcher uses a qualitative method in this research. Photovoice task and in-depth interviews are used to get the data. The respondents of this research are eleven students who joined the study abroad program. It is concluded that there is an identity shift in themselves. The researcher found the effects of the identity shift of students’ study abroad such as the respondents speak English more, understand different accents, and give respect to different cultures. Therefore, by joining a study abroad program, they can increase their confidence and improve their English skills.

Abstract

This paper discusses the novel "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens which expresses the author's society "Victorian Age". It is clear that Dickens was much more successful than his predecessors in exposing the troubles of the society including class division and social struggle in the 19th century. The objective of this study is a psychological study of the main character “Pip” and the moral values from the story. The paper contains an introduction which expresses the role of literature in Victorian society. Moreover, it sheds light on Dickens and how he deals with the problems of Victorian society in Great Expectations. This paper entirely focuses on the struggle of the main character to find his dream as a gentleman and his love, the characterization of the main character, and moral values can be taken from the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. It also consists of the conclusion sums up the findings of the paper.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the translation methods of Indonesian Cultural Terms. It suggests that there are 8 translation methods including Word-for-word translation, Literal translation, Faithful translation, and Semantic translation, Adaptation Free translation, Idiomatic translation, and Communicative translation. A qualitative approach was applied in this study. The method for analyzing data is content analysis. Peer discussion and triangulation were applied to enhance the validation. The result of the translation method mostly uses literal translation with 32.29%. This proves that the Target Language (TL) still has many vocabulary deficiencies. The translator could not find equivalent cultural terms, then the translator had to borrow them from the Source Language (SL) as the translator could not find the equivalent of cultural terms from the original novel.
