This study aimed to find out the use of the manual dictionary and electronic dictionary in learning and daily activity by the students in the University of Serambi Mekkah, Banda Aceh. This study used descriptive qualitative method for the data collection. The population in this study were the students at the University of Serambi Mekkah and the sample used in this study was 30 English major students in the University of Serambi Mekkah. The researcher used a questionnaire and interview in collecting the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher used percentage formula. The result of the study showed that 63% of students often used the manual dictionary, 96% of students often used the electronic dictionary. Meanwhile, the students majoring at English department in the University of Serambi Mekkah commented about the benefit of using the dictionary was that it could help adding the vocabulary and made the learning process easier.

This research was carried out to see factors that affect the classroom atmosphere on the effectiveness of English learning. It was done to investigate whether the noise, teacher factors, and classroom facilities had any effects on the effectiveness of learning English at SMP N 13 Banda Aceh. The method used in this research is a qualitative method, which is a descriptive qualitative design. Then the respondents in this study were grade 9 students at SMP N 13 Banda Aceh. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire, it was distributed to students in order to determine the effect of the classroom atmosphere on the effectiveness of learning English. The data analysis technique used in this study is calculating the percentage. The result shows that from the3 factors, they are the noise factor of 50%, then the teachers effect is 45%, and 33% facilities affect the effectiveness of learning English in SMP N 13 Banda Aceh.

Rewards and punishments are one of the strategies used to motivate students in learning English. This study purpose to find out the kinds of rewards and punishments used by the teacher in motivating students and to know the students’ responses of rewards and punishments in learning English at VIII-I grade at SMP Islam Ibnu Khaldun. The method used in this study was descriptive study. The participants of this study were an English teacher and 30 students of VIII-I grade. This study used interviews and questionnaires of instruments. Analyzing the data for the interview, the writer included the audio-tape recording, then the writer transcripted what the interviewers said and the writer classified the answers based on the transcription, and then draw the conclusion. To analyze the data the writer used percentage formula of questionnaire. From the results of the interview several rewards were used by the teacher in the classroom; praise, gifts, and grades and there were some punishments that were used by teachers; memorizing vocabulary, writing sentences, reading Al-Qur’an letters and cleaning class. In addition, the results of the questionnaire showed that most students responded positively to the provision of rewards and punishments by the teacher. In addition, 99 % of the students agreed that they became more active, more responsible, and also motivated. It turns out that those who considered punishment to be effective were 100%. Therefore, it could be concluded that implementation of rewards and punishments in learning process was more effective because it can make students study hard.

Instagram is now a photo and video-sharing social media platform used around the world, and English is increasingly used in captions by non-English speaking Instagram users. This study was aimed to figure out why students at Serambi Mekkah University write English captions on Instagram. This study involved 30 students majoring in English at the University of Serambi Mekkah. The research design used was a descriptive study. To collect data, a close-ended yes-no question questionnaire was distributed online through Google Form. The questionnaire measured the responses in terms of English learning and self-image factors. The results show that the reason students of Serambi Mekkah University used English in their Instagram captions is mainly driven by their need of improving their English proficiency, specifically the spelling and vocabulary. The self-image factor plays a relatively important role too, as half of the participants confessed that they used English in their Instagram post for the sake of being regarded cool and creative. This study suggests that EFL learners use social media not only to improve their English but also to show people their competency in using English.

One of language skills is speaking. Thus, it needs to be improved through appropriate teaching technique such as Debate; using British Parliamentary System. The population of this study consisted of all students who finished Speaking II and IV courses in the Academic Year of 2014-2015. Seventy-five students were chosen as the sample of this study; 32 students were in the control class and 43 students in were in the experimental class. Then, tests were used in collecting the data. The data were then analyzed by using t-test. The result showed that the students of English Study Program of FKIP USM who were taught speaking skill by using Debate with British Parliamentary System received higher score than those who were taught without implementing Debate British Parliamentary System. Based on the findings, the writers recommend that the lecturers can use Debate technique with British Parliamentary System in teaching speaking to improve students speaking skill.

Reading is one of the most challenging language skills for many students. They often find it difficult to comprehend a text they are reading, while in fact, reading comprehension is the indicator that one has mastered reading skill. The aims of this study were to find out the factors behind the difficulties faced by the students of SMP Negeri 16 Banda Aceh in reading comprehension. This was a case study using quantitative descriptive method. The result showed that difficulties frequently faced by the students in comprehending a text were their unfamiliarity with a complex word or vocabulary, difficulty in comprehending sentences, difficulty in comprehending a paragraph, difficulty in comprehending the whole selection or content of a text, and the difficulty in identifying the main idea, the plot of a text, the kinds of texts, and English structure without the help of a dictionary.

The objective of this study is to find out if there is a significant difference between the eighth-grade students of SMP Islam YPUI Banda Aceh who are taught writing recount text by using TAI strategy and those who are taught without using TAI strategy. This study was conducted by using quantitative approach and research design used was experimental study. The population of this study was all eight grade students of SMP Islam YPUI Banda Aceh. The total population is 60 students who are composed of two classes; VIII Male and VIII Female. Every class consisted of 30 students.While the samples of this study were the students who were taken from both classes. One class was as an experimental group and the other was as the control group. In this study, class VIII Female was taken as control group and class VIII Male was taken as experimental group.The data was analyzed by using t- test. Based on the result of the study, the writer found that there was a significant difference between the two groups. It can be proven from the result of this study where the result of post-test of the both group was 4.26, it was greater than t-table (2.00).Based on the result of the study, English teachers of SMP Islam YPUI Banda Aceh who teach writing skill especially recount texts are suggested to use TAI strategy in teaching and learning process because it can improve the students’ ability in mastering writing especially writing recount text.

The study was aimed to find out if there is a significant difference between the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh who are taught reading comprehension by MIT strategy and those who are taught without using MIT strategy. This study belonged to experimental study. The population of this study was all of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh in the academic year of 2017/2018. The total population was 151 students who were composed of five classes; class VIII1, class VIII2, class VIII3, class VIII4, and class VIII5. The sample of this study was taken randomly with the total of 70 students, 35 students in experimental group and 35 students in control group. Choosing class as experimental and control group was also done randomly. The data were gotten through test; pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 18.0. The result of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh who are taught reading comprehension by using MIT strategy and those who are taught without using MIT strategy. It can be proven from the result of this study, where the result of t-test of post-test for both group was 3.07. While the result of t-table with the level of significance 0.05 was 0.67. Thus, t-test (3.07) was greater than the t-table (0.67). Based on the result of the study, English teachers of SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh, especially those who teach reading comprehension, should implement MIT strategy in teaching and learning process because the implementation of the strategy can increase the students’ reading comprehension mastery.

Some strategies used by teachers when teaching English seemed to be less effective, causing the students to have a comprehension difficulty, including in reading. This issue was also found among the students of SMA Negeri 1 Darul Imarah, Aceh Besar. This study was therefore conducted to find out whether or not the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Darul Imarah taught reading comprehension by using KWL Strategy will receive a higher score than those taught without KWL Strategy. This study used the quantitative method with experimental design. Sixty students were taken as the sample. The data were analyzed by using t-test, and the result showed that the t-score of two means between post-test of experimental and control group was 2.19 thus, the t-test was higher than the critical value of the t-test for the degree freedom of 58 (167) at the level of significance 0.05.

The language that is used in teaching influences the success of teaching and learning process. When the medium used by teachers in teaching and learning process is not effective; thus, it makes the students get problem in learning English, including in learning reading skill. The aim of the study is to find out if the usage of English as the medium of language instruction in teaching students’ reading skill is better than the common way, and to find out how the students respond toward English as the medium of instruction during learning reading. This study is conducted by using one group pre-test and post-test design. The total population of this study was 60 students in the second grade (class VIII1 and class VIII2). While the sample of this study is students who are taken from class VIII1. The researcher used purposive sampling technique in choosing sample. The data were collected through test and questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by using t-test and percentage. The result of t-test calculation shows that t-test (8.34) is higher than the critical value of t-test for the degree freedom of 29, which is 1.70 at the level of significance 0.05. It means that the usage of English as the medium of language instruction in teaching students’ reading skill is better than the conventional language instruction. Based on the result of the study, the English teachers are suggested to use English as the medium of language instruction in teaching the students’ reading skill because it can increase the students' ability in mastering reading skill.
