Abstract

This research aims to examine how social identity is actualized during the Gotilon Feast at the HKBP Onan Baru Resort Church in Samosir Regency, North Sumatera. Gotilon Feast is understood as a space of inculturation that combines Batak Toba culture and Christian values, serving as a medium of expressing the cultural, personal, and communal identity of the Batak Toba-Protestant Christian congregation. The research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, collecting data through interviews, and documentation,  analyzed using social identity theory, Pierre Bourdieu's habitus theory, and Habermas's public sphere. The results show that the celebration reflects strong symbolic practices such as the use of ulos, tortor, Batak music (gondang), and the giving of silua. In addition to being a Thanksgiving ritual, the celebration also reveals social dynamics, including a shift in meaning toward a symbol of prestige and social status. The study also found generational differences in perception and variation in practice between rural and urban churches. Through the lenses of social identity theory, Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus, and Habermas' public sphere theory, the Gotilon Festival is seen as a cultural-religious event that constructs social identity through the intersection of faith and tradition. Thus, the celebration serves as both a religious practice and a public space where cultural and spiritual negotiations occur.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of gadget addiction on changes in the social interactions of early childhood children in Betungan Village, Bengkulu City. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, data was collected through in-depth interviews and documentation, analyzed using theory of social change and symbolic interaction. The results of the study show that, on average, children spend more than four hours per day using gadgets, far exceeding the one hour limit recommended by experts. This habit has led to a decline in children's participation in group play, difficulties in understanding emotional expressions, and limitations in two-way communication. Passive stimulation from screens replaces physical activity and creative play, which are essential for fine motor development and imagination, thereby hindering socio-emotional growth. The main factors contributing to addiction include easy access to gadgets at home, app designs that make it difficult for children to detach, and a lack of alternative educational and recreational activities. In addition, the use of gadgets as a distraction tool in parenting reduces face to face interaction and emotional closeness between parents and children. A collaborative effort between families, educational institutions, and local governments is needed to set screen time limits, provide child friendly play facilities, and develop interactive stimulation programs to mitigate the negative effects of gadget addiction on the social, emotional, and cognitive development of early childhood.

Abstract

This study aims to analyses how women or mothers act as content creators in the digital economy, highlighting their primary motivations for this activity. The research method used was qualitative with a descriptive approach, in Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan. Primary data collection was obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation, with structural functionalism (Talcott Parsons) as the analytical tool. Secondary data were sourced from relevant journals, books, and reports. The results show that women as content creators reflect the concept of structural functionalism. Adaptation is evident in mothers' ability to learn new technologies to meet their families' economic needs. Goal attainment is reflected in their motivation to earn additional income and achieve self-actualization. Integration is demonstrated through active interaction on digital platforms, fostering social networks and solidarity. Latency (pattern maintenance) is reflected in their efforts to balance traditional values with the demands of modernity in content creation. Thus, mothers as content creators play a role as active economic agents and responsibilities for their families, strengthening social cohesion and supporting social balance in the digital era.

Abstract

Tourism is a critical driver of economic growth, with rising demand for rural destinations grounded in cultural heritage. This study analyses actor relations in the development of culture-based tourism villages, using Kampung Zapin, Meskom, Bengkalis as a case. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, combining participant observation, and document analysis. Data were coded thematically to identify patterns of interaction, stakeholder roles, and governance strategies. Results show that internal actors, local communities and village administrations interact with external actors, including government agencies and tourism organizations, through overlapping yet complementary roles. Collaborative efforts focus on optimizing resources, seizing market opportunities, and addressing weaknesses. These findings highlight a governance strategy that integrates local strengths, namely kampung zapin, as a Malay tradition and custom, with institutional support, and offers a replicable model for visiting culture-based tourism villages. Zapin, as part of Malay culture, has proven to attract both national and international tourism. This research contributes to the literature on tourism governance and provides policy insights for enhancing rural tourism competitiveness in Indonesia and beyond.

Abstract

Voters with disabilities still face a number of structural and cultural barriers in exercising their right to vote. Therefore, the approach taken by the General Elections Commission (KPU) in ensuring inclusive participation is crucial to analyses. This study aims to explore differences in the approaches used, the factors that influence them, and provide suggestions for implementing more disability-friendly elections in various locations. This paper will compare the KPU strategies in Semarang City and Malang City in encouraging disabled voter participation in the 2024 General Election using a comparative literature study method analyzed using Peter Schroder's political strategy theory. Data were collected through literature studies and in-depth interviews with several informants. The study's findings indicate that the Malang City Election Commission (KPU) was more innovative, involving democracy volunteers, providing specialized services at polling stations (TPS), and building close collaborations with various institutions. In contrast, the Semarang City Election Commission (KPU) took a more cautious approach, focusing primarily on digital service innovation. However, other strategies, such as voter education and outreach, remained passive and limited in scope, as they did not reach all groups of people with disabilities, particularly those not integrated into formal communities.

Abstract

Corruption in social assistance programs in Indonesia represents a critical failure of public policy with far-reaching impacts on societal welfare. This study aims to analyse the relationship between social assistance policies, corrupt practices, and politicization by political actors, while also assessing their implications for governance. Employing a qualitative narrative approach and literature review combined with public policy analysis, the research seeks to understand how social assistance programs function both as instruments of welfare and as political tools. The findings reveal that weak leadership commitment and low institutional integrity have frequently led to the misuse of social assistance as a political instrument ahead of elections, while simultaneously opening space for systematic corruption. A comparative study with China and Rwanda demonstrates that the success of anti-corruption efforts is largely determined by the political will of leaders and the strengthening of governance systems. Therefore, reforming Indonesia’s social assistance policies should be directed toward three key aspects: strengthening anti-corruption regulations, digitizing transparent distribution systems, and ensuring political leadership commitment to uphold integrity. This article underscores that social assistance policies are not merely about welfare distribution, but are also deeply tied to the sustainability of democracy and the legitimacy of governance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyses the "military barracks" policy initiated by the Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi as a response to juvenile delinquency as well as a complex product of power. The analytical framework uses the three-dimensional theory of power by Lukes and the sources of power by Mann to explain the political, military, and ideological interactions in public policy formation. The research method is a single case study with a Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) approach. The data comes from the 12 most accessed national news and is strengthened by secondary data from the Indonesian Political Indicators survey (2025) regarding the level of public acceptance of this policy. The analysis is carried out through pre-processing of the text, identification of actors and concepts, the construction of discourse networks, and the calculation of network metrics to map the centre of power and framing of discourse. The results of the study show that the military barracks policy is an arena for the articulation of social forces that interact with each other. The program emphasizes how formal and symbolic power synergize to build legitimacy, while still provoking public debate about children's rights and the effectiveness of militaristic approaches. This study also found that the military barracks policy is a concrete example of how power is interpreted, exercised, and debated. This policy represents the dynamics of democracy at the regional level. Policy is not only a product of the executive branch, but an interaction between political, military, media, public and legislative actors who mutually test the limits of power.
