Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the dynamics of ugamo malim adherents in fighting civil rights. The research used qualitative methods through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with ugamo malim figures to understand the facts that exist in society. Furthermore, the researchers conducted data reduction before drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that people who adhere to ugamo malim are always faced with intolerance and discrimination. The incorrect understanding of the function and meaning of religion in life, including the views of the minority of ugamo malim adherents, makes it difficult for ugamo malim adherents to be accepted by the general public and government circles. The discriminatory actions felt by religious people from various regions in Indonesia united them in a social movement to gain official recognition from the state. Groups of adherents from various regions in Indonesia submitted a request for judicial review to the Constitutional Court (MK) and it was granted. The efforts of followers of ugamo malim to continue to exist and preserve the values and traditions of the Toba Batak people in social movement theory are called new social movements. The main and first social movement carried out by the ugamo malim community was marhamalimon. Through marhamalimons, various rituals were established, a new center of worship was established, and the organizational structure of the parmalim was also determined. Efforts to fight civil rights were also carried out by ugamo Malim through education. Various negative prejudices against ugamo malim people have been identified by various achievements in the field of education. Ugamo malim people have worked in many government and private institutions and occupy strategic positions.

The results show that the Community Service collaboration between IAKN Tarutung and USU contributed significantly to addressing farmers' complaints regarding plant pests. The service was carried out by involving the farming community, facilitated by Sampuran Village officials. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with five farmer groups were conducted to identify and address plant pest problems effectively. The program's sustainability strategy includes ongoing training sessions, the establishment of farmer self-help groups, and periodic monitoring facilitated by local agricultural extension officers.

Abstract

This research aims to examine how social identity is actualized during the Gotilon Feast at the HKBP Onan Baru Resort Church in Samosir Regency, North Sumatera. Gotilon Feast is understood as a space of inculturation that combines Batak Toba culture and Christian values, serving as a medium of expressing the cultural, personal, and communal identity of the Batak Toba-Protestant Christian congregation. The research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, collecting data through interviews, and documentation,  analyzed using social identity theory, Pierre Bourdieu's habitus theory, and Habermas's public sphere. The results show that the celebration reflects strong symbolic practices such as the use of ulos, tortor, Batak music (gondang), and the giving of silua. In addition to being a Thanksgiving ritual, the celebration also reveals social dynamics, including a shift in meaning toward a symbol of prestige and social status. The study also found generational differences in perception and variation in practice between rural and urban churches. Through the lenses of social identity theory, Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus, and Habermas' public sphere theory, the Gotilon Festival is seen as a cultural-religious event that constructs social identity through the intersection of faith and tradition. Thus, the celebration serves as both a religious practice and a public space where cultural and spiritual negotiations occur.

Abstract

This study addresses the urgent need to strengthen character education in response to the moral degradation caused by globalization, which has weakened students’ connection to local cultural values. It specifically aims to analyze the integration of Boru Ni Raja, a Batak Toba cultural concept that honors women as symbols of family dignity and moral integrity, into character and contextual education in the Silindung region. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA framework, 42 relevant articles published between 2015 and 2025 were analyzed to identify theoretical patterns, challenges, and opportunities for cultural integration in education. The findings reveal that Boru Ni Raja embodies values of respect, responsibility, loyalty, and social solidarity that align with the goals of 21st-century character education. The study is novel because it introduces a gender-based cultural framework, a perspective rarely discussed in previous educational literature on Batak Toba local wisdom. Academically, it contributes to expanding the theory of culture-based and gender-responsive education, while practically, it provides guidance for teachers to design contextual learning rooted in local culture. The study recommends future empirical research to validate this conceptual model in schools across Silindung and to compare it with other cultural contexts in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines how Boru ni Raja (women of royal descent) in Toba Batak society exercise agency to drive inclusive rural development in Silindung, North Tapanuli, Indonesia. Grounded in the social action theory of Max Weber and the structuration theory of Anthony Giddens, the study fills a crucial knowledge vacuum regarding how indigenous women navigate patriarchal systems through culturally embedded strategies. Using a 16-month multi-site ethnography (2023–2024), comprising 45 informants' interviews, document analysis, and participatory observation, the study reveals four key strategies: (1) leveraging cultural capital (82% efficacy), (2) building transgenerational networks (68%), (3) innovating local economies (57%), and (4) negotiating political spaces (39%). Findings demonstrate that Boru ni Raja reinterpret traditional values like Dalihan Na Tolu (kinship philosophy) and hasangapon (dignity) to legitimize leadership, resulting in a 320% increase in women’s institutional representation (2020–2023) and a 45% rise in average income. Despite resistance from male elites (60% of cases), their incremental approach transforms patrilineal structures without overt conflict, highlighting the potential of indigenous knowledge in fostering hybrid modernity. The study contributes to sociological debates on gender, development, and cultural change by theorizing subaltern agency in rigid hierarchies. Practical implications emphasize culturally sensitive empowerment programs for traditional societies.
