Abstract

AbstractImproving student outcomes can be influenced by the basic role of the teacher, one of them is pedagogical competence. It is crucial because reflected in the curriculum and learning process implementation, and English teacher is a key role in effective language. The purpose of this study was to analyze the students’ perception of English teachers’ pedagogical competence, to know the students' achievement, and to determine the correlation between students’ perception toward teachers’ pedagogical competence and their achievement in English subject at SMA Islam NU Pujon. Being designed in a correlational study, the sample was 92 students at twelfth grade and used simple random sampling technique. The instrument in this study was the questionnaires and tests. The result of the responses from students regarding the questionnaire and test were in the medium category, and the result showed that the correlation coefficient value was .373 which means the relationship is positive. Furthermore, the sig. value was .000 which was less than .005 means that there was a correlation between students’ perception of English teachers’ pedagogical competence and their achievement. Abstract

The curriculum is a system that has several components to achieve a goal. The curriculum acts as an energy component for education, energy that supports the success of the objectives of each component of education to achieve educational goals. Therefore curriculum development dynamically needs to be done to meet the demands and changes that occur in the community. Curriculum integration is an effort to develop a better curriculum, especially in English language. In this lesson, the Cambridge curriculum used a language skills approach. In the 2013 Curriculum, the approach applied was language competence which included grammatical competence, social competence, and communicative competence.The purpose of this study was to describe the results of the integration curriculum (Cambridge and 2013 curriculum) on English subject, while also explaining the process of implementing learning using Integrated Curriculum (Cambridge Curriculum and 2013 Curriculum) on English subject. It also describe the strengths and weaknesses of the implementation of the integration curriculum (Cambridge curriculum and 2013 curriculum) on English subjects and can describe the constraints of implementing the English Integrated Curriculum (Cambridge and Curriculum 2013) on VIII grade at TAZKIA international Islamic boarding school Malang.This research is a qualitative research. It was conducted on VIII grade students at TAZKIA international Islamic boarding school Malang. The subjects of this study were the head of the madrasa, the deputy head of the madrasah curriculum section, the English teacher and students. The research tools used were interview guides, documentation sheets and observations, and student questionnaires. The data obtained was analyzed descriptively.Integration curriculum results, namely, in the process of integrating the Cambridge curriculum and the 2013 curriculum, there are adaptation and adoption processes. The adoption process is carried out on material content that is not in the 2013 curriculum but feels important in the Cambridge curriculum. The process of implementing learning by using Integration curriculum has 3 stages, namely learning planning, learning implementation, and learning assessment. Of the three stages, the English teacher of TAZKIA international Islamic boarding school Malang has carried out the process of implementing learning by using the Integration curriculum very well. The advantages of implementing integrated curriculum at TAZKIA international Islamic boarding school Malang are that the English language and reasoning skills of students increase.

Abstract

The learning process be managed professionally by professional educators as well, in order to achieve the goals that are based on an education. In this case, teacher’s pedagogical competence is needed, especially in this Covid-9 era; which obliges the learning process done in distance learning. This research discusses the pedagogical competence of English teachers in overcoming students' learning difficulties. The problems of this research are: first, what is the form of students' learning difficulties perceived by teacher’s perception; and the second, how the efforts of the English teacher pedagogic competence in overcoming the learning difficulties of students. This study employed qualitative design that attempt to explain a phenomenon. Interview was used as the primary tool to collect the data. Furthermore, these interviews provided further insight about the way teacher uses pedagogical competence to overcome students’ learning difficulties in distance learning during covid-19 pandemic. The results of this study show that the pedagogic competence of English teachers can overcome students' learning difficulties. With this competency, the teacher uses herself as a leader in the classroom to manage effective and efficient learning. So that it is an effort to overcome the learning difficulties of students.

Abstract

This study was conducted to see the correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking performance in speaking class of fourth-semester students.   It is intended to get the data about whether a statistically significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking performance. This research design was the correlation method. Toward data collection technique in this research was questionnaire and document study. The questionnaire was to measure students’ self-confidence and documents study to observe about their speaking performance.  Furthermore, the data were analyzed by applying analysis factor to classify the factor which conducted from self-confidence (Awareness, Capability, and Belief) and regression analysis which aimed to see the regression between three factors as the independent variable and students’ speaking performance as the dependent variable.  From regression calculation result showed that the F value 1.760 < 3.91, Sig score .157b > 0.05 and T scores (awareness 0.008, capability 0.533, believe 1.845) < 1.976. Thus, it can be concluded that self-confidence has low significant correlate with speaking performance. Then, based on the result, it is suggested that lecturers need the lecturers are suggested to facilitate and activate students' linguistic intelligence by fortifying their grammatical and vocabulary in the learning process. For the future researcher, this topic is quite general the researcher suggests doing deep investigations about the relationship between self-confidence and speaking performance aims to get details by using different statistical that such as factor analysis and multiple regressions to obtain the information more detailed about these relationships with more specific instruments. Therefore, the researcher also suggests applying add spoken test as the kind of better research instrument accompanies with make students classification belongs to the level of students’ confidence and speaking performance.Keywords: Self -Confidence, Speaking Performance

Abstract

Refusal is a problematic speech acts for someone who is learning a certain language they have never used as child such as English Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Negative responses to an interlocutor’s request are often applied to approve a refusal. In the classroom interaction, learners and lecturers tend to negotiate their requests using various strategies of refusal. Miscommunication appeared when they failed to transfer pragmatic competences.   The objectives of this research is to investigate types, the response of refusal strategies, and the reason behind the use of various refusal strategies as performed by Indonesian, Chinese, and Libyan EFL learners. It involved six Indonesian EFL Learners (ILs), three Chinese EFL Learners (CLs), and three Libyan EFL Learners (LLs). They were asked to respond to six varied directions which were achieved refusal strategies. Discourse Completion Task (DCT), observation, and semi-structured interview are used to collect the data for further analysis. Findings portrayed that all three EFL Learners used regret in their refusal strategies. However, the use of refusal strategy in each context given was different. They used indirect refusal strategies as acceptances to the interlocutor.  The reason of using politeness in their refusals is to maintain interlocutor’s face and minimize Face Threatening Acts (FTA).

Abstract

The purpose of learning English does not run on certain scope of school, but it reaches all grades. The significant aim is enabled the student to communicate in English. A communication skill can be developed and reached through some elements which should be studied, there are major of skill, namely; speaking, reading, writing, and listening which are presented in the 2004 English curriculum. It cannot be realized which English is a part of communication, and used in the world. English is a foreign language especially in Indonesia which attached middle of formal school. That is why English is not only learnt in some countries, but also categorized as foreign which learnt for communication. In English teaching process, TPS can be used as an alternative way that can be applied in teaching English, including reading. This research will be conducted to find out the effect of Think Pair Share on student’s reading comprehension achievement. The experimental research is done with an assumption that Think Pair Share never applied at the eleventh class SMA 17 Agustus 1945 Banyuwangi. Through it is necessary to do a research entitled “The Effect of Using Think Pair Share on students reading ability. Reading is a complex dynamic process that involves the bringing of meaning to and the getting of meaning from printed page (Rubin, 1993:4). Basically, reading is a process of getting ingormation from written words. Reading passages usually tells about the aim to grasp the author’s idea. By reading is not simply process of getting the meaning of the printed.             The hypothesis is statistically stated there is significant difference in the reading comprehension achievement between students taught using think pair share technique and the conventional technique. Abstract

The aim of this study is to developing a WebQuest for teaching writing recount text to the tenth graders. This product using Research and Development (R&D) adapted from Hyland (2013) which consist of need an analysis, product development, expert validation, first revision, product tryout, second revision and final product. This product was validating by a lecture of English Department in Brawijaya University and an English teacher of MA Bilingual Batu. The WebQuest was create by using google site and divided into seven sections such as introduction task, process, evaluation, conclusion, resources, and teacher page. The result showed that this product of WebQuest was suitable for teaching writing recount text.

Abstract

Teachers have important roles in the development of a nation. Teachers’ roles become broader nowadays since transferring the materials in the classroom is not the only duty to fulfill. Research is one of the government ways to improve and develop teachers’ professional development. There are factors affecting teachers’ in conducting research that need to be found out. This paper aims to find out the problems faced by teachers, factors affecting to conduct research and how the teachers solve the problems. The research method was sequential explanatory multi-method strategy with quantitative data that is explained in qualitative way. The research instruments were adapted questionnaire from Borg (2009) and the interview guide created by the researchers. There were 12 public and private junior high schools in Tulungagung that include 37 participants of English teachers chosen for this study. This research is expected to be helpful for the future researchers that have interest about teacher research and practically beneficial for the teachers in any level of school to be more engaged in doing the research besides teaching. Key words: factors, affecting, junior high school teachers, teacher research, Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop teaching material for debate activity in speaking class. The design of this research was Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research were 27 students in 4th semester of English Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty in Mayjend Sungkono University. The procedure of developing the teaching material for debate activity in speaking class was done through some steps adapted from Borg and Gall (1989). There were need analysis, material development, expert validation and revision, try out and revision, then product finalization. The researcher developed teaching material for debate activity in speaking class based on the interview to the lecturer and questionnaire to the students. The result ot the interview and questionnaire was used to develop teaching material for debate activity in speaking class before having validation from the experts. The material developed by adapting debate guidance from debate seminar and workshop, also from debate database book and guidance. The researcher added some parts of debate scripts examples, motion bank and debate website tournaments. There were 2 experts as validators. The first expert focused on the content of the product. The second validator focused on layout and the application of the product. After getting the validation and suggestions from both experts, the researcher revised the product.

Abstract

ABSTRACTEnglish language has basic skills; speaking, reading, writing, and listening. One of these basic skills which is still difficult and complicated for the students to learn is reading. Some problems which could be found in reading are: (1) finding the meaning of new words, (2) the lack of vocabulary, (3) less motivation, and (4) less interest in learning English. The researcher thought that through KWL (KNOW-WANT-LEARN) Strategy, the students’ can improve their Reading Comprehension of Descriptive Text of animals. The research answered this main question: How can 32 students of VIII F Class at SMPN 9 Banjarbaru in academic year 2016/2017 improve their Reading Comprehension of Descriptive Text through KWL Strategy?Research methodology was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) that was done from October 26 to November 10, 2016 in even semester of academic year 2016/2017 of SMPN 9 Banjarbaru, Kalimantan Selatan which involved 32 students of VIII F Class.There were two cycles used in this research and each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The result indicated that there is an improvement of students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text by using KWL Strategy.  It can be seen from: (1) the students’ behavior in paying attention in teaching and learning, (2) participation of students’ who were active, (3) enthusiastic of students’ activity in reading, (4) score result of Initial Reflection (IR) was 52.34, (5) Reflection result of (X1), (X2), (X3), and (X4) were 59.69, 67.19, 75.00, and 82.19 which showed the progress of Students in Reading Comprehension of Descriptive Text by Using KWL Strategy. It can be concluded that implementation of KWL Strategy in reading comprehension of descriptive text is effective and appropriate for the students to improve their reading comprehension.
