Abstract

AbstractTeaching speaking as a foreign language is a complicated activity. Teachers perform some efforts to achieve oral competence in English. The teachers should prepare a good lesson plan, appropriate teaching strategies, and speaking assessment. A lesson plan is considered a crucial part of teaching speaking because it contains the objectives of the course, teaching and learning activities, and the assessment to check students’ understanding of the lesson. This research is conducted to describe the process of teaching speaking activity in informal English institution. This study was intended to answer the research problems: What is the planning to teach speaking skill, What is the teaching strategy to teach speaking skill, and What is the assessment to assess speaking skill. Therefore, this study had some objectives to investigate the planning, teaching strategies, and assessment activity in teaching speaking. The research was conducted using qualitative design which focuses on a case study. The research site was at Mr. Pepsi English course kampung inggris Pare Kediri due to some special treatment given by the teacher in teaching speaking. The researcher selected this course since the course program focus on speaking skill. A qualified teacher who has been teaching within three years and teach the impromptu program at the course was required as the research subject. To collect the data, the researcher conducted observation, interview, and documentation. The findings revealed that the teacher planned the teaching activities by designing a lesson plan as guidance in the class. The strategies used by the teacher to teach speaking are an oral presentation, discussion, dialogue, and reading aloud. In addition, an assessment for speaking skill was interview practice. Some suggestions addressed to English teacher, government, and future research on the basis of the result. EFL teaching practitioners should improve the ability to design a lesson plan and selecting strategies for teaching speaking. Assessment activity should be related to the objectives of the course. Also, the government should provide training and workshop to enhance the quality of the EFL teacher. For the next researcher, conducting a study in the same research design is suggested by using different skills and set of place.Key Words: speaking comprehension, teaching speaking, English course

Abstract

The use of online learning brings many changes to teach EFL in Indonesia. The teacher should be creative in making a medium to make the students interested in and enjoyed the lesson. The purpose of this study is to know how to use Instagram as a medium for teaching students' speaking skills and students’ response toward the treatment of Instagram. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles. It involved 27 Islamic Preaching and Communication students of Institute Sunan Kalijogo Malang.  In the treatment process, the students were asked to make some videos of some chosen topics. The students were asked to fill in the questionnaires of the Instagram implementation. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was concluded that students had improved their speaking skills and given positive responses through the use of Instagram as a medium in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive texts. The subjects of this study were eight grade students. Total of the students were 21. This study consisted of 2 cycles, each cycle consisting of 3 meetings. In the first cycle, the picture strategy procedures were (a) The researcher gave a picture to students, (b) the researcher asked students to write vocabularies of the picture (c) the researcher asked students to arrange vocabularies into sentences. However, steps above had not been successful to improve the students’ ability so the researcher improved steps in cycle 2 into (a) the researcher divided students into 7 groups with 3 members for each group, (b) the researcher gave the group picture, (b) The researcher asked students to discuss the picture, (c) The researcher asked students to write the vocabulary from the picture, (d) The researcher asked students to make a written description on each paper based on the written vocabulary. The steps improved in cycle 2 made students easy to write a description because they discussed the picture. Because the score in cycle 2 met the criteria, the researcher stopped the study.Arikunto. Abstract

The effect of direct and indirect written corrective feedback has long been debated among the teachers and researchers. The previous studies have also been conducted and found the different results that have not been settled. It still becomes a big question, therefore the researcher conducts the same study in the different level, in non-formal education. This study aims are to find out which written corrective feedback is more effective in improving writing performance of the students and to verify the previous studies about the effectiveness of both feedback. The design of this study is a true experimental research. 21 students in intensive course participated in this study. They were divided into two groups. 10 students in experimental group One were given direct written corrective feedback and 11 students in experimental group Two were given indirect written corrective feedback. In analyzing the data the researcher used Independent sample T-test. The findings revealed that the students who are given direct written corrective feedback achieve significantly better (p: .002) writing performance than the students who are given indirect written corrective feedback. It means direct written corrective feedback is more effective in improving writing performance than indirect written corrective feedback. Keywords: writing performance, direct feedback, indirect feedback.

Abstract

Abstract YouTube is easy for students to access via mobile phones or laptops. They can lookout videos in the schoolroom or in the schoolroom anytime, anyplace which builds them also actuated and keen to acquire. Since the YouTube site is free, both students and teachers can easily lookout and upload videos. Schoolteachers from complete the world birth created their have watercourses on YouTube and regularly upload severals dissimilar academic videos that pupils get utile. Covid-19  has  been  declared  as  a  global  pandemic  by  WHO. It affects all aspects of humans’ life, including their education. Teaching and learning processes during the pandemic of Covid-19 are done online. However, many Indonesian teachers have not used this  teaching media and learned is its benefits yet. Therefore, this research was used to investigate students' views on using YouTube to learn English. This research adopts survey method. In addition, interviews will be conducted after this survey to obtain more in-depth data. The participation of survey data and interview data may make the survey results more reliable relative to the subject under study. The study involved forty-four students as study participants to answer the questionnaire. In addition, this study also tracked the results of the questionnaire by interviewing 3 of 44 participants. In order to collect data, the questionnaire was distributed using Google format media (with multiple choices) and Whatshapp media (recorder) to collect interview data. The survey results show that students have a positive view of YouTube. Most participants agree that they like youtube because it can help them learn English. Another positive effect is that students’ vocabulary has been improved. Therefore, the research results show that YouTube can be used as an alternative teaching medium to improve students' English learning level, especially vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Code mixing happens in bilingual or generally in multilingual society. It also happened in SMP Negeri 3 Busungbiu, a Junior High School, Busungbiu District of Buleleng Regency in Bali. The students often mixed English and Indonesian to express their idea during the English lesson. Based on the structure, the kinds of code mixing are in the forms of word, phrase, baster, repetition, idiom and clause. The research used descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative. The subject of the study was 9th grade students in class A and the English teacher of State Junior High school (SMPN) 3 Busungbiu, Buleleng, The study used recording and interview sheet.  From the research, the writer concluded that the highest number of code mixing in students’ transcript is code mixing in form of word level which attains 20 data and the fewest number of codes mixing in students’ and teacher transcript is code mixing in form of idiom level which has no data. The students’ reasons to do code mix were that they felt shy to speak English, were afraid in doing mistakes when they spoke English, and they lost the idea when they began to speak English. The English teacher also explained that the reason she used code mix was to help the students understand the meaning of English sentences easily and stimulate students to speak. Based on the classification of code mix done during the research, the researcher did not find code mix in idiom level from the two speaking transcripts because the students did not have many vocabularies in English. The result of this research may help the readers to know that code mixing often found in students learning foreign language, especially English.  This result of this research is expected as a feedback in improving the teaching process so students can improve their English knowledge without depending on the use of code mix. Keywords: bilingualism,code mix, teaching learning process

Abstract

This study aimed to know and dig out the deep students’ perception using zoom in speaking skill as the alternative solution, whether the use of zoom as media in online learning in speaking class effective or ineffective during pandemic eras of COVID-19. The subject of this study were thirty of English department students at fourth semester of University of Islam Malang. The research was survey qualitative. The data collection technique was undertaken by giving questionnaires through Google Form and use the technique of deep interview using smartphone recording in zoom meeting. There were thirty students participated in giving questionnaire and there were nine students participated in undertaking the deep interview at fourth semester of English department University of Islam Malang.The data were analysed and interpreted through qualitative procedure. The findings indicated that the majority of students at fourth semester of English department have negative perception in using zoom in speaking skill as the alternative learning media in this pandemic of COVID-19. The result of this study indicates that the use of zoom in speaking class ineffectively to be used in speaking class, the use of zoom in speaking class could not give the students real social interaction and make the students to be a silent learner in speaking without having adequate feedback and special opportunity in conducting the discussion in speaking class. Keywords: Speaking skill, students’ perception, the use of zoom.

Abstract

This investigation goal is to investigate and to answer of applying mini cluster forum in the classroom against student’s reading understanding. This enquiry was administered at Eleventh grade of SMK Darussalam Blokagung Banyuwangi. In this case, the researcher used quantitative research namely Quasi-Experiment so that it’s needed a sample of population at this school namely XI AK 1 as control class and XI AK 2 as treatment class. In treatment class, the researcher utilized mini cluster forum strategy to understand a literature or written text and used big cluster forum in control class. Besides that, there were two steps in this study to obtain data namely by holding pretest and posttest. The yield showed that the students instructed by exercising mini cluster forum got enhancement in comprehending of a written text. Abstract

AbstractThis study examines trained EFL learners peer feedback on narrative text in the context of students with low English language proficiency. Researcher conducted pretest to each students (n=26). They write a narrative text in which the title has been prepared by researcher then they review their peer writing. After that, students are given two coaching peer feedback. Each meeting is eighty minutes. After that researcher conducted posttest and compare pretest and posttest. Result showed that students who obtained training peer feedback are better than before getting trained peer feedback on their writing ability although it is not significant result. The improvement of students’ score can be seen from the difference both pretest and posttest. The mean score of pretest improved from 56 to 66.31. The researcher concludes that the extensive training will implicate to the significant result of their writing and it enhanced critical thinking of LP students.  Keywords: EFL writing, peer feedback, peer feedback training

Abstract

The comprehension of reading become daunting for ESP students.  The purpose of this research is to establish whether there is a significant relationship between student use of metacognitive reading strategies and reading comprehension; motivation for reading English text and reading comprehension; metacognitive reading strategies and motivation for reading toward reading comprehension of ESP Students at the second semester of Economics and Business department. The findings of this study showed a strong association between student use of metacognitive reading strategies and reading comprehension. Accordingly, there is also a strong relationship between reading motivation and reading comprehension. Nevertheless, there is a significant correlation between metacognitive reading strategies and reading motivation for reading comprehension.
