Abstract

This research is attentive to the sorts of CS and CM, the frequency, and the reasons used to code switch and code mix in the class used by the teacher of SMAN 7 Banjarmasin. The design is used in qualitative and quantitative research. The form of percentages using a quantitative approach then discussed, analyzed, and explained using a qualitative approach. The sources of the data are the teacher utterances that contain CS and CM. In results, there are three types of CS and CM that are used by the teacher. The types of CS are intra-sentential, inter-sentential, and tag switching. The types of CM are intra-lexica, intra-sentential, and involving a change of pronunciation. The teacher always uses CS more than CM. The teacher often to use CS inter-sentential. Then, the teacher often uses CM intra-sentential. The research shows there are six reasons to use CS and CM in a classroom. They are the rhetoric reason, the topic of conversation, being emphatic, interjection, repetition used for clarification, and softening and strengthening request or command. Then, there are three reasons to use CS and CM in the classroom. They are the rhetoric reason, repetition used for clarification, and softening and strengthening request or command.

Abstract

Teachers have important roles in the development of a nation. Teachers’ roles become broader nowadays since transferring the materials in the classroom is not the only duty to fulfill. Research is one of the government ways to improve and develop teachers’ professional development. There are factors affecting teachers’ in conducting research that need to be found out. This paper aims to find out the problems faced by teachers, factors affecting to conduct research and how the teachers solve the problems. The research method was sequential explanatory multi-method strategy with quantitative data that is explained in qualitative way. The research instruments were adapted questionnaire from Borg (2009) and the interview guide created by the researchers. There were 12 public and private junior high schools in Tulungagung that include 37 participants of English teachers chosen for this study. This research is expected to be helpful for the future researchers that have interest about teacher research and practically beneficial for the teachers in any level of school to be more engaged in doing the research besides teaching. Key words: factors, affecting, junior high school teachers, teacher research, Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze and investigate how the speaking exposure undergone by members of ESA. Then, the result of study can give relevant information for improving English speaking skill. These are the reasons as stated above why the present study was designed. How the speaking exposure undergone by members of ESA was investigated through narrative study with semi-structured interview. Three selected members of ESA (respondents) were involved in this research. They all are from members of English Student Association at University of Islam Malang. This study employed qualitative data analyses. The qualitative data were gained from the transcribed interviews (spoken discourse). The findings of the study yielded that in terms of speaking exposure received by members of ESA, the respondents were found to be easy in gaining speaking exposure in most of the English programs in ESA. They are easy to obtain the speaking exposure because the respondents are very active in joining and participating English activities. Further, based on the data gathered from most of respondents’ voice about speaking exposure, it is clear that speaking skill needs to have more chances to enhance the English speaking.            Keywords: narrative study, speaking exposure, English Student Association.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are: (1) Do the students who taught by using picture series have better achievement in writing narrative text than those who are not taught by using picture series technique writing for the eighth grade students of MTs Zainul Hasan IV in the academic year 2019/2020.The lookup was once carried out at MTs Zainul Hasan IV East Java, from October 2019. The lookup approach was once experimental. The matters of the lookup are the college students of the eighth grade A and the second grade B. Each of them consists of 20 students. There are 5 boys and 15 females in the eighth grade A and there are moreover 9 boys and eleven females in the eighth grade B. The eight grade A is as an experimental class which used to be taught the utilization of picture series and the eighth grade B is as a control class which used to be taught using translation. The facts have been obtained from test. The researcher acquired quantitative statistics for her research. They are the students’ rankings of students’ writing take a seem at after having eight instances treatment for each and every class. The researcher analyzed the facts the use of ANOVA by means of the use of SPSS 20.The result analysis test used descriptive statistic, normality test, test of paired pattern t test, homogeneity test, test of impartial sample t test. The descriptive statistic was pretest of experimental group is 16.90 and imply for pretest of control team is 16.35. The researcher found imply of experimental of posttest is 20.80 and imply control group of posttests is 18.70. Standard Deviation for pretest of experimental group is 1.804. And Standard Deviation for pretest of control group.is 1.089. A normality test used to be 0.097, while 0.097>0.05 (a: 5%), it should be referred to that the facts used in this research have been usually distributed. test of paired sample t test was each of the corporations have been the equal at (2-tailed) at Sig 0 lower than 0.05. But from the skill of experience -3.900 used to be greater than -2.350 of the.control group homogeneity test was once the posttest used to be 0.268 > 0.05. It should be said that the variance of the posttest information was homogeneous  test of independent pattern t test was the sig (2-tailed) used to be < 0.05, it should be concluded that statistically exceptional or significant on the probability. And the mean distinction was 2.100, because it has high quality value it capability that the first group of experimental group was higher than the 2d group or control group.Keywords: Picture Series, Narrative Text, Writing Skill.

Abstract

Indonesian government seriously takes the issue of the teacher education graduates who are considered not to have an established ability to become professional teacher in school, even resulting in disagreement with the implementation of the program. This further calls for a more thorough investigation of the inherent legitimacy of new teachers in Indonesia, as well as their quality. The objective of this study was to reveal pre-service teachers' perceptions of their own competency and readiness to teach. This study employed a survey research design involving 67 undergraduate students of university in Lamongan. The result of this research showed that p value (.258) is greater than ɑ (.05), sugeesting that there was no correlation between pre-service teachers’ perception toward their competence and readiness for teaching profession. Nevertheless, on their perceptions, the pre-service teachers perceived their competence and their readiness were positively in good category and ready for teaching profession. By realizing and considering the aspects for the teaching profession, they feel more confident and ready to face the real environment of teaching as their profession.Keywords: pre-service teachers, perception, competence, readiness

Abstract

AbstractThe existing of inappropriate English workbook for third grade students of Junior high school become main problem for the students. The existing of English Workbook has limited training and limited material for students. The aim of this study was to develop English workbook by contextual teaching and learning for third grade of SMP SIMANJAYA Lamongan. This study involves third grade students, English teacher, and two experts. The developing English workbook based on the need analysis and interview. The design of this study was Research and Development (R&D). The procedure of this study were, need analysis, writing a course grid, developing the product, try out the product and revising the final product. The instruments of this study is questionnaire. The data from the expert are analyzed and describe qualitatively. The try out is to know the whether it was appropriate and effective for students in third of Junior High school. The final product of this study is English workbook which using contextual teaching and learning. The result of this study showed that students were agree and interested in the learning process through this English workbook. Key words : English Workbook, contextual teaching and learning

Abstract

The teaching strategies have a significant impact on the students' understanding in a process of learning. This study aimed to investigate the teachers’ strategies and problems faced by the English teachers in applying the strategy especially in teaching English speaking skills at SMP Negeri 12 Malang. The study involved three English teachers as participants of the study. This research design was qualitative research of case study. Based on the end of the result, it was discovered that there were some strategies that the English teachers used in teaching English speaking skills. The strategies that the English teachers used are the active learning method which combines with role-play strategy and the expository learning method which combine it with the drilling strategy. Besides those strategies, the teachers also have another technique to solve any problems in conducted speaking class such as lack of vocabulary, lack of confidence in speaking English and pronunciation problem. To overcome this issue, each of the English teachers has different techniques in solving this problem.

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of Focus on Forms (FonFs) and Focus on Form (FonF) instruction on productive vocabulary knowledge. Being designed in quasi-experimental, 65 students in the classes of first grade of junior high school were divided into two different groups receiving different instruction. FonFs group as Experimental group receiving instruction through present-practice-produce (PPP) task, while Control (FonF) group receiving instruction through Dictogloss task. These two group were proved on different level of productive vocabulary knowledge before treatment by the score of productive vocabulary level test, the scores than became pretest score. After the treatment, a set of test was given to get the posttest score. To achieve the purpose of this study, the scores of the productive vocabulary test then analyzed using ANCOVA in SPSS 20. The result of this study indicated that FonFs and FonF instruction affected students’ productive vocabulary knowledge ability. It concluded that Form-Focused instruction is claimed to be indispensable for productive vocabulary knowledge. Keywords: focus on forms instruction, focus on form instruction, productive vocabulary knowledge

Abstract

This research anxieties with the mind mapping be implemented to improve the speaking skill of the students of Mentari class in elementary level at Fajar English course. In addition, the purposes of this research are to describe how mind mapping can be implemented to improve the speaking skill of the students of Mentari class in elementary level at Fajar English course. This research used Classroom Action Research. This research aimed to apply a strategy to help the students learning to speak effectively. Classroom action research is a research action that uses a specific strategy, uses significant teacher observations and has certain research rules. Likewise, researcher used questionnaires and interviews as instruments. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher can conclude that in two research cycles, the researcher found strategies to solve problems in the speaking class, such as: brainstorming before starting teaching; show students examples of mind mapping; demonstrate how to make mind mapping, use pictures as initial ideas, use colors, use lines as a connecting topic; Explanation that mind mapping is a visual display of ideas. Branches of sub topics spread from ideas of thought; provide student paper for making mind maps; asking students to say words in mind mapping; asking the students to make paragraph from the topic and apply in mind mapping; giving the students a chance to speak base on mind mapping orally; asking the students to speak up based on mind mapping. The second, the technique was more effective to help them to improve talking. This was proven by the result of the observation checklist, analysis guide of the teacher, questioner, and the students’ score often in the two cycles raised than preliminary study scores. Those scores were no one get 75 (previous score), 17 students or 70% got under 75 score or 8 students’ or 30% passed the minimum started achievement 75 (in cycle 1), and 20 students or 80% passed the minimum standard achievement, 75 (in cycle 2). This research has reached the criteria for success.Keywords: Extensive reading, Independent learning

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using “Think Aloud Technique” on the eleventh-grade students reading comprehension achievement at one of “Vocational School in East Java Indonesia”. Quasi-experimental research is the design of this study that employs “XI A1” as the experimental group and “XI A2” as the control group. The experimental group got treatment by “Think Aloud” technique while the control group had no treatment but taught by using group discussion technique. The researcher conducted this study in four meetings, three meetings for giving treatment in the class, and a meeting for conducting the post-test. The data was collected by using multiple choice reading comprehension tests. The data obtained were analyzed by using the independent t-test formula. Result of data analysis showed that there is a significant effect of using the think aloud technique on the eleventh-grade students’ reading comprehension achievement in Vocational School in East Java (p=.034).
