Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the role of spiritual leadership in strengthening the sustainable performance and economic resilience of MSMEs in emerging Asian economies facing post-pandemic shocks, climate risks, and increasing ESG regulations. Within a TSR–Maqasid Sharia framework, it explores the relationships between spiritual leadership and workplace spirituality, innovative work behaviour, organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB), and crisis responsiveness.Study Design/Methodology/Approach: The study adopts a structured narrative literature review, synthesising scholarly articles, institutional reports (ADB, OECD, World Bank, ASEAN), and practitioner documents. Data are analysed using content and thematic approaches guided by Tawhid String Relation (TSR) and Maqasid Syariah to integrate vertical (habluminallah) and horizontal (habluminannas) dimensions into MSME practices. Findings: Findings indicate that spiritual leadership – through vision, hope/faith, altruistic love, meaningful work, and sense of community – positively enhances MSME resilience by fostering intrinsic motivation, workplace spirituality, OCB, innovation, and crisis responsiveness. Sustainable performance is framed within the Prophetic Economy (Quad P: Prophet, Profit, People, Planet), aligning with Maqasid Sharia principles. In this regard, the Asta Gatra perspective can be used to show that MSME resilience is shaped by both natural and social dimensions, so spiritual leadership strengthens not only internal values but also the broader strategic capacity of the business. Originality/Value: This study contributes by extending Spiritual Leadership Theory within TSR and Maqasid Sharia paradigms, positioning spirituality as a strategic nonmaterial asset to achieve falah, sustainability, and long-term competitiveness under ESG pressures.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines how return on assets (ROA) and the debt-to-equity ratio (DER) influence firm value, measured by price-to-book value (PBV), in Indonesia’s transportation and logistics sector, and assesses the moderating role of DER in the ROA-PBV relationship. It also interprets the findings through the economic dimension of the Asta Gatra framework to explain their relevance to economic resilience and national growth. Study Design/Methodology/Approach: This study applies a quantitative approach using secondary panel data from transportation and logistics companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Purposive sampling selected 27 companies from a population of 37 companies for the 2021-2024 period. The study analyses the data using panel-data regression and tests DER as a moderating variable. Findings: ROA and DER positively and significantly affect PBV. The interaction between ROA and DER also has a positive and significant effect on PBV, indicating that DER strengthens the relationship between profitability and firm value. These findings show that effective asset utilisation and capital structure management strengthen firm value and support the financial resilience of transportation and logistics companies, with broader implications for economic resilience. Originality/Value: This study extends firm-value research by examining DER as a moderator of the ROA-PBV relationship in Indonesia’s transportation and logistics sector. It also integrates an Asta Gatra perspective to connect firm-level financial performance with the broader discussion of economic resilience and national growth.

Abstract

Purpose: This review examines how digital financial inclusion strengthens the resilience of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and its relevance to Indonesia’s Asta Cita development agenda and economic resilience. It focuses on how access to digital financial services develops into organisational capabilities that help MSMEs withstand disruption, adapt to change and sustain long-term viability. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses a structured narrative review of peer-reviewed literature published between 2016 and 2025 from Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Emerald Insight and SpringerLink, supported by selected Google Scholar studies and Indonesian policy documents. The review synthesises evidence on mechanisms, capabilities, resilience outcomes and boundary conditions. Findings: The review identifies four mechanisms: liquidity access, transactional visibility, managerial information and ecosystem connectivity. These mechanisms foster absorptive, adaptive and transformative resilience when MSMEs develop sensing, seizing and reconfiguring capabilities. Their effectiveness depends on digital literacy, affordability, trust, infrastructure, institutional support, consumer protection and regulatory readiness. Originality/value: The review develops a capability-conversion framework explaining why similar digital financial technologies produce different resilience outcomes. It links firm-level capability development with Asta Cita priorities and demonstrates its relevance to inclusive economic resilience and sustainable national development.
