Abstract

Abstract: Reading is one of the activities that students can use to expand their knowledge and strengthen their critical thinking skills, and one of the most essential components of reading is vocabulary mastery. In this case, both vocabulary and reading cannot be separated. So, this research aimed to find the correlation between students’ reading ability and their vocabulary mastery.In this research, the researcher used quantitative approach, to measure the correlation between two variables; vocabulary mastery (X) and reading ability (Y), the researcher used a Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The researcher analyzed it by using the statistic software Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) 16. In this research the researcher using a test. The test consisted of 40 multiple choice questions that were divided into two parts. Twenty questions are for vocabulary and twenty questions are for reading. The subject of this research is 37 students at eighth grade of SMP Darul Falah in the academic year 2021/2022.From the calculation, it was found that the mean for vocabulary mastery was 51.62 and the standard deviation was 17.797, while the mean for reading was 53.65 and the standard deviation was 14.026. The significant value was 0.000, which is less than 0.05. Further, the r-value is 0.766 based on the table correlation coefficient, which means there was high and positive correlation between the two variables. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and the reading ability of eighth grade students of SMP Darul Falah Kemang Indah. This correlation includes a high correlation based on the degree of correlation.Finally, because there are some limitations to this research, it is highly recommended for future researchers to carry out a deeper analysis, and it is hoped that future researchers will use more populations and samples in their research. In addition, this research also serves as feedback to English teachers to evaluate their teaching performance especially in using vocabulary and reading, so that vocabulary mastery and reading ability are always connected.Key Words: Correlation, reading ability, vocabulary mastery

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate students’ speaking problems in the third semester and the strategies used in overcoming their speaking problems in the fourth semester at University of Islam Malang. The sample of this research were 3 representative students of each class in the fourth semester who got A score in speaking from semesters 1-3. The researcher employed descriptive-qualitative method. The instrument of this research was conducted through interviews.              The findings research showed that students had some speaking problems in the third semester. The problems were afraid of making mistakes, feeling insecure, and lack of vocabulary. All those problems occurred when they spoke English in the classroom. The main problem that often occurred in students speaking English was feeling insecure. To solve their speaking problems in the third semester, students used several strategies that were implemented in the fourth semester including speaking practice and preparation, having good interaction, and learning by using media. Among all the strategies that were often used by students to overcome their speaking problems were practice and preparation.In addition, this study was expected to be useful for teachers in providing theories related to methods or techniques for teaching students speaking strategies. Secondly, for the students, this study could provide information for students related to students speaking difficulties and strategies used for improving their speaking skills. There were several suggestions, for teachers, students, and future researchers. Teachers should be able to practice and prepare the strategies in teaching and learning activities in order the students could be easier to understand the lesson that they gave. Teachers could prepare with creative material so that the students were more interested in learning speaking English. Then, students could practice their speaking English with their friends in order they could be more fluent in speaking English. Also, students could prepare before getting presentations in order they could reach good results. Furthermore, the strategies used by students in overcoming speaking problems could be examined more deeply by future researchers. Abstract

Abstract: This research was the analysis of translation methods in the short story “The Real Princess” by Hans Christian Andersen translated from English to Indonesian by the participants of the research. The participants were selected from the translation II class of the 6th semester of the English Education Department of UNISMA using typical sampling of purposive sampling by questionnaire and interview. The data were collected from 4 participants' translation documentation with the A score from the translation I class and having some experience in translating. There were 22 sentences from the short story and a total of 88 data to be analyzed by the researcher. The analysis process was based on Newmark’s translation methods theory with qualitative descriptive methods that includes document analysis. As the results of the research, the researcher discovered 6 translation methods used by the participants to translate the short story. These translation methods were faithful, literal, communicative, semantic, free, adaptation. Faithful translation was the most used translation method among the 6 discovered translation methods. Keywords: Translation, Translation methods, Short story, Newmark

Abstract

Abstrak: Pemecahan masalah mengutamakan proses dan strategi yang dilakukan peserta didik dalam penyelesaian masalah daripada sekedar hasilnya. Di satu sisi pemecahan masalah matematika penting, namun di sisi lain peserta didik sering mengalami kesulitan dalam pemecahan masalah matematika. Selain itu peserta didik juga lemah dalam menganalisis soal, memonitor proses penyelesaian, dan mengevaluasi hasilnya. Dengan kata lain, peserta didik tidak mengutamakan teknik penyelesaian tetapi lebihmemprioritaskan hasil akhir. tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis peserta didik pada materi relasi dan fungsi melalui model pembelajaran think pair share kelas VIII SMP Negeri 3 Batu Dalam penelitian ini pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kualitatif,jenis kualitatif yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Proses pengambilan data dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 3 Batu. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan 3 cara, yaitu observasi, tes dan wawancara. Setelah data diperoleh, kemudian dilakukan analisis data kualitatif yang terdiri dari: analisis sebelum di lapangan dan analisis selama di lapangan. Analisis selama dilapangan meliputi reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan hasil kesimpulan. Setelah itu dilakukan uji keabsahan data. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa peserta didik dengan kemampuanpemecahan masalah matematis tinggi memenuhi empat indikator dengan baik, yaitu: mengidentifikasi elemen-elemen yang diketahui, yang ditanyakan, serta kelengkapan elemen yang dibutuhkan; merumuskan masalah matematis atau membuat model matematis; mengaplikasikan siasat untuk memecahkan permasalahan matematika; serta memaparkan atau menginterpretasikan hasil berdasarkan permasalahan awal. Peserta didik dengan kemampuan pemecahan masalah sedang memenuhi memenuhi indikatormengidentifikasi elemen-elemen yang diketahui, yang ditanyakan, serta kelengkapan elemen yang dibutuhkan dengan baik, indikator merumuskan masalah matematis atau membuat model matematis dan mengaplikasikan siasat untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan matematika dengan cukup baik; serta indikator memaparkan atau menginterpretasikan hasil berdasarkan permasalahan awal dengan kurang baik. Sedangkan peserta didik dengan kemampuan pemecahan masalah rendah memenuhi memenuhi indikator mengidentifikasi elemen-elemen yang diketahui, yang ditanyakan, serta kelengkapan elemen yang dibutuhkan dengan baik; indikator merumuskan masalah matematis atau merancang model matematis dengan cukup baik; serta indikator mengaplikasikan siasat untuk memecahkan permasalahan matematika dan memaparkan atau menginterpretasikan hasil berdasarkan permasalahan awal dengan kurang baik.Kata-kata Kunci : pemecahan masalah, think pair share, relasi dan fungsi.

Abstract

Abstrak:Penelitian ini memfokuskan tentang interprestasi Perempuan Dalam lagu ke dalam sebuah bentuk karya seni akan digambarkan sebagai bentuk yang berbeda-beda tergantung dengan lirik lagu yang salah satunya disimbolkan dengan gelas yang mempresentasikan perempuan yang anggun, cantik, menawan, namun gampang pecah. Konsep bentuk dalam penciptaan seni lukis adalah menghadirkan objek perempuan dengan destruksi bentuk juga perempuan yang direpresentasikan secara simbolik melalui komposisi elemen-elemen seni rupa pada bidang dua dimensi dengan figur objek yang telah mengalami proses deformasi. Penelitian yang digunakan yaitu menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan menggunakan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Sumber data yang digunakan adalah Lirik Lagu Tradisional Banyuwangi yag diantaranya Kembang Galengan, Ulan Andhung-Andhung, Lare Ayu, Kembang Pepe, Kembang Peciring, Dhonge Mekar. Pada aspek yang pertama simbol sprit hidup yang merujuk pada keyakinan bahwa Tuhan adalah penguasa alam semesta dan manusia wajib untuk mengikuti perintah tuhan baik pada menerima takdir Tuhan. Kedua yaitu simbol kehalusan budi pekerti yang terdiri dari tiga aspek yaitu watak, kepribadian perilaku Ketiga, adalah simbol mempertahankan keluarga yang terdiri dari tiga aspek yaitu cinta akan keluarga, mau berkorban dan memiliki kepedulian.Kata Kunci: Simbol, Citra Wanita, Lagu Tradisional Banyuwangi

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to discover translation methods used by the higher translation achievers of English education department of UNISMA in translating academic text. The research design was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was translation students who got an excellent final score in 3rd translation subject and students who have massive practice in translating. In order to identify the translation methods used by the higher translation achievers, a questionnaire and documentation were used as the instruments for collecting data. The instruments are collected through online and offline. The translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988) were used as the framework of this study. The process of data analysis included data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings of this study showed the students used four types out of eight translation methods used by the higher translation achievers in translating thesis abstracts. Moreover, faithful and semantic were indicated as the most effective methods determined by the higher translation achievers to translate academic text. Keywords: translation methods, abstract, higher translation achievers

Abstract

Abstrak: Novel sebagai salah satu bentuk karya sastra mencerminkan realitas sosial yang di dalamnya memuat berbagai permasalahan dan problematika yang dialami oleh manusia. Salah satunya mengenai poligami yang merupakan bagian dari konflik sosial dalam lingkup keluarga. Novel berjudul Dua Barista karya Najhaty Sharma menyajikan sebuah cerita berupa problematika kehidupan rumah tangga yang menerapkan sistem pernikahan poligami. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk 1) mendeskripsikan solvable conflict dan 2) mendeskripsikan perpetual conflict dalam novel Dua Barista karya Najhaty Sharma. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu pendekatan sosiologi sastra dengan menggunakan teori konflik keluarga yang dikemukakan oleh John Gottman. Metode yang digunakan yaitu metode kualitatif dengan jenis deskriptif. Sumber data yang digunakan yaitu novel berjudul Dua Barista karya Najhaty Sharma. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu teknik pengkajian isi dokumen. Teknik analisis data  pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik analisis interaktif. Hasil dari penelitian ini yaitu 1) solvable conflict yang meliputi ketegangan, perbedaan pendapat, salah paham, dan pengambilan keputusan. 2) perpetual conflict yang meliputi faktor keturunan, pertentangan, kesetiaan pasangan, ketegangan, penolakan oleh keluarga, dan pandangan buruk masyarakat.Kata kunci: solvable conflict, perpetual conflict, poligami, novel

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe the linguistic problem faced by students in MA NU 03 Sunan Katong Kaliwungu Kendal in learning speaking and the students’ ways to resolve it. The method in this study was qualitative descriptive. XI grade in MA NU 03 Sunan Katong Kaliwungu were the population in this study which is XI social 3 as the sample by doing lowest sampling from all the class in XI grade. The data used in this study were observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The instrument of this research consist of the question of interview was adapted from Heriansyah (2012) and Robah (2021) and the questionnaire was adapted from Balqisa et al. (2020). The findings of this study showed that the student’s speaking performance was still low. The students have several linguistic problems in learning speaking based on students’ belive. Poor of grammar was dominated linguistic problem faced by students continued with a lack of vocabulary. Moreover, the third dominated linguistic problem in speaking was a lack of pronunciation. To overcome the linguistic problem, the students had several strategies to solve their problem in speaking such as using handphone to increase vocabulary and pronunciation, reading some book, listening to music, and watching films to improve vocabulary, asking to friend and teacher to get more information, and practice with their own self or with their friends in the class. Based on the findings, it gifts the information about the linguistic problem faced by students in English and their way to solve their problem in learning. Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to know the correlation between students’ foreign language anxiety and their speaking performance, whether or not there is a correlation between them. The research design of this study is quantitative research in form of correlational design. The subjects of this study were 42 students from forth semester students of English Department in Unisma that took speaking 4 class. FLCAS questionnaire that consists of 33 items was used to collect data of students’ foreign language anxiety and the document of students’ midterm test score to know their speaking performance. The result of this study is there is a low negative correlation between students’ foreign language anxiety and their speaking performance, the higher anxiety of students the lower their speaking performance. Keywords: Correlation, foreign language anxiety, speaking

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to know the correlation between students’ anxiety and their English speaking achievement, and also to discovery the significant difference in the students’ speaking achievement among MIPA1, MIPA2 and MIPA3 classes. This research used correlation design with quantitative approach. The person who takes part in the activity of this research was 72 students from eleventh grade students of MIPA1, MIPA2, and MIPA3 classes in SMA Islam Al-Maarif Singosari. FLCAS questionnaire that consist of 22 items was used to collect data of students’ anxiety and the document of students’ final test score to know their English speaking achievement. The first finding of this study shows there is a negative correlation between students’ anxiety during class presentations and their English speaking achievement, and it is correlated at -0.921 which means the correlation is in a very high correlation. The second finding shows that there was a significant difference on the students’ speaking achievement among three classes.Key words: Correlation, Anxiety, English Speaking Achievement
