Abstract

Science learning outcomes such as science process skills and attitudes toward science are still important issues in science education. In this study the researchers tried to get a picture of the students' learning outcomes to get input on the learning process of science in the coastal area. As an initial study of the development of maritime-based contextual science learning media, the purpose of this research is to know the extent of science process skill level, attitude toward science, and academic achievement of students in coastal area. There were 114 students of the 8th grade of four lower secondary schools in Merbau Island participated as respondents in this study. Instruments used in data collection are science process skills tests and attitude toward science questionnaires for lower secondary school students. The results showed that 8th grade lower secondary school students in Merbau Island had high attitude toward science. On the contrary, the science process skills and academic achievement of their science are relatively low.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the competence of the Mathematics teacher of Dumai Junior High School which is below the national average value. This study aims to analyze how much influence of achievement motivation, teacher participation, and teacher participation in MGMP together on teacher competence. To achieve this goal, this paper used a survey research type with a quantitative approach. The research population was all Mathematics teachers of Dumai for Middle School who had participated in the 2015 UKG, totaling 88 people. With the total sampling technique, the entire population was determined as a sample. The data analysis used is descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis. The results showed that there was a positive and significant influence of achievement motivation on the competence of Mathematics teachers by 26.3%. There is a positive and significant effect of teacher participation in the MGMP on the competence of Junior High School Mathematics teacher by 22.5%. There is a jointly significant effect of 30.8% achievement motivation and teacher participation. The achievement motivation variable has a greater influence than the teacher participation variable. This means that the high and low competence of junior high school mathematics teachers in Dumai can be influenced by achievement motivation and teacher participation in MGMP.

Abstract

This study aims to develop student worksheets (LKPD) based on scientific literacy on the digestive system subject of class XI IPA high school. The small group test was conducted at SMAN 4 Dumai, because the LKPD used so far had not been based on scientific literacy so the scientific literacy ability of students was still low. This type of research was a research and development model of Borg and Gall. The validity instruments were the RPP, the LKPD, and the question validation sheets. The practicality instrument was a questionnaire of teacher and student responses. The validator consists of 2 lecturers (subject and education experts) and 2 teachers (practitioners). The data obtained is qualitative data converted to quantitative data. RPP validation results from 7 aspects of 3.8 (valid). LKPD validation of 3.77 (valid) includes content aspects of 3.92, linguistic 3.63, content 3.67, and characteristics of 3.85. LKPD is classified as practical after being tested on 15 class XII science students who have received food digestion subject before. The results of the response of students by 3.51 from 3 aspects, namely subject, language and presentation. The results of teacher responses amounted to 3.77. It can be concluded that the LKPD developed is feasible and practically used in the learning process.

Abstract

The study was conducted to observe the effectiveness of Lesson Study as an approach used to increase the skills of an out-of-field Mathematics teacher or ‘non-optional’ teacher, in building the conceptual understanding among students during the teaching and learning process. This qualitative case study was conducted using a Lesson Study approach involving a novice Mathematics teacher who is also a non-optional teacher, in a district of Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. An expert in Mathematics, School Improvement Specialist Coach(SISC+) was involved in the classroom observation. There were three different sessions conducted and the observation was recorded. Transcripts were prepared for the three observations for comparison and analytical review on the learning and teaching process with the Excellent Mathematics Teacher. It was observed that the Mathematics teacher’s competency improved after evaluating the students’ response and achievements after the learning session. Teachers who were involved,developed their skills and expertise through discussions during the Lesson Planning, teaching and review sessions. The teachers are more confident in addressing students issue as well as class control ‘Lesson Study’ approach had contributed to upgrade the skills and efficiency of the non-optional Mathematics teachers as well as enriching the learning strategy, approach and methodology.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and analyze the effect of economic literacy and the amount of pocket money on students consumption behavior through self-control. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. The types of research data are primary data and secondary data. The population in this study was 899 students majoring in social studies and a sample of 244 students. The sample uses Arikunto's opinion with a percentage of 25%. Data collection techniques in this study were tests and questionnaires. The data analysis technique in this study used SPSS 25. The results of this study show that Economic literacy and the amount of pocket money have a positive and significant effect on the self-control of students in the Social Sciences Major State Senior High School in Bagan Sinembah District. Economic Literacy and the amount of pocket money have a negative and significant effect on the consumption behavior of students in Social Sciences majoring SMA Negeri in the Bagan Sinembah. This proves that the better the economic literacy, the wiser and more rational in consumption will be and through the self-control that exists in students, especially it will help students in managing their pocket money.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine comprehensively the effect of the application of REACT learning models based on the Malay cultural context of Riau on students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities. The research was a quasi-experimental research with Pretest-post-test control group design. The sample of this study was all students of class VII SMP 12 Pekanbaru. The results of data analysis were: (1) There was a difference of the mathematical problem-solving ability of Pekanbaru junior high school students between who learned to use REACT learning models based on the Malay cultural context of Riau and students who studied with conventional learning; (2) There was a difference of the mathematical problem-solving ability of Pekanbaru junior high school students between who learned to use REACT learning models based on the Malay cultural context of Riau and students who studied with conventional learning in terms of aspects of student ability levels, (3) There was no interaction between the learning model and the level of students’ ability to the ability to solve mathematical problems; (4) There was a difference in the mathematical problem-solving ability of Pekanbaru junior high school students who learned to use the REACT learning model based on the Malay Malay cultural context in terms of aspects of student ability levels.

Abstract

One of the challenges in the teaching of chemistry to students in higher education is their introduction to the visualization and molecular depiction software, deepening thus their understanding and creating new conceptions in the physical and biological sciences. This paper describes the implementation of a learning unit for 1st and 2nd semester undergraduate students (that were not previously exposed to molecular visualizations) in agricultural technology for chemistry and biochemistry courses respectively. A series of educational activities are presented beginning with the use of simple molecular models as plastic and wooden balls for atoms and sticks for bonds, to enhance the previous knowledge of the 2-D structural conformations. The students are introduced in depth to the theory of chemical bonding, molecular shapes, and polarity. This represents a continuum of increased complexity in inquiry-based learning, starting from simple molecules and ending with the exploration of the shape and function of a protein molecule, such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 protease; Thus easily leads to the study of the interactions between this protease and inhibitory drugs, via freely-available software tools. The gains in the students’ understanding and help for future courses and their career are analyzed.

Abstract

Teaching practice is central to achieving the goals of teacher education. It provides student-teachers needed experience in real teaching and learning environment. This study examined student-teachers perception of the effectiveness of teaching practice supervision. The quantitative descriptive method was employed to conduct the study. Random sampling technique was employed to sample 150 student-teachers at the 400 level of a university in the metropolis. A researchers-designed questionnaire titled “Student-teachers’ Perception of the Effectiveness of Teaching Practice Supervision Questionnaire (STPETPSQ)” was used for data collection, with descriptive and inferential statistics used for data analysis. Findings revealed that the majority of the student-teachers perceived teaching practice supervision as effective for improving students’ teaching knowledge and skills. There was no significant difference was established in the perception of student-teachers on the basis of departments. It was recommended that teaching practice supervision should be improved upon to assist student-teachers to adopt appropriate and varied teaching methods.

Abstract

Improving the quality of education can take advantage of technology that is currently increasingly advanced. The expected result, the education world is no longer awkward in using technology to improve its quality. One of the lessons that requires learning media technology is chemistry. This study aims to develop interactive learning media using Autoplay Studio 8 for Hydrocarbon material and conducting some tests to determine the response of educators and students as well. The media created were tested, including testing the feasibility based on expert validation and the responses of educators and students to the developed media. The research method used in the development of instructional media that used a research and development (R&D) approach. Overall the interactive learning media Autoplay Studio 8 developed was declared valid by a validator consisting of three material experts and three media experts with an average percentage value of media experts being 94.15%, and an average percentage of material experts 93 7%. The response of chemistry teachers and students with an average percentage score was 94.6% and 92.33% categorized as very practical. It can be concluded that media is ready to use in the real learning process.

Abstract

The quality of human resources is an important factor in the midst of intense business competition at the moment. One way to improve human resources is through education. Education is very important because the presence of education will change one's mindset for the better, as well as the importance of education for UMKM business owners. In sago-based UMKM, the level of education of business owners is still relatively low because most business owners only have graduated from elementary school, as well as business success, because 70% of business owners have low incomes and sales have not increased from year to year. Therefore, this research was carried out with the aim of: 1) analyzing the level of education of business owners; and 2) analyze the factors that influence business success. Sampling used propotional random sampling to obtain 80 business owners. The data analysis technique used was descriptive quantitative and multiple linear regression. The results of study found that that the education level of sago-based business owners was still low. The entrepreneurial characteristics, business characteristics, access to capital, marketing capabilities, and government support and business networks have a positive and significant effect on the success of UMKM.
