Abstract

This study investigates the use of Nearpod in a Higher Education teaching and learning process which was conducted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on evaluating how Nearpod can promote active and interactive learning that has become one of the challenges in managing online classes with a large number of students. This qualitative descriptive study employed classroom observations, interviews, and questionnaires to collect the data. The participants involved in this study were 100 students from a university in Bandung. The research findings reveal some benefits that a cloud-based education platform, Nearpod, is likely to be effective to attract students‘ attention and promote their interaction and engagement. The students have a good perception towards the use of this tool as it provides various, fun, and meaningful activities. Furthermore, it allows them to get immediate feedback individually as proof of their comprehension of the materials. On the other hand, the aforementioned strengths might be constrained by the unstable internet connection and limited capacity of the selected Nearpod type. Based on the study, it is recommended to use the platform with different levels to see whether it will be as effective and engaging as at a higher level.

Abstract

This study is an investigation of college students’ English tense knowledge, according to their work of writing simple past sentences. The students’ written work was analyzed to find the most frequent errors made by students when they were writing their activities done in the day before. The errors were then identified in the sentences on their writing. The study used descriptive qualitative method, and was conducted through (a) identifying the most frequent errors in student’s simple past sentences, (b) classifying the errors into their categories, and (c) analyzing what causes the errors to be made. The result shows that the most frequent errors made by college students in writing simple past sentences are errors of verb formation.  The verb formation errors are classified into three forms of error: regularizations, archi-forms and alternating forms. The dominant errors found in this research are archi-form (88%) and alternating form (12%). The errors are most likely caused by the students’ confusion in selecting a class member of verb as there are two choices to use, the students’ growth of grammar knowledge that make them have bigger or more selection of verb use and the students’ comprehension failure of mastering tense.

Abstract

In speaking English, students still find many difficulties especially when students make speeches, and unfortunately in giving speeches students are rarely given feedback so they don't know where their mistakes are. Feedback can be given by teachers or their peer. In fact, transactional peer feedback is believed to be able to foster students’ participation as well as communicative competence in compared with the feedback from the teacher (Liu & Carless, 2006). In this paper, the researcher intends to find out how peer feedback is implemented, the focus especially discusses the types of feedback used by the participants in this study, and the effect of conducting peer feedback on students' speech. This study makes use of descriptive qualitative method. Involving 6 participants. The data sources of this research are observations, student speech scores, and interviews. Observations were conducted in 3 weeks, the students' speech scores from the assessments of their peers before and after peer feedback, and interviews. From the observation, the researchers identified the types of feedback that were often used by participants, namely corrective feedback, reinforcing feedback, and didactic feedback. From the interview, the researcher perceived that the students found it beneficial from given feedback. In addition, peer-feedback techniques also have a positive effect on participants. Peer feedback can improve student speech, student confidence, and fun learning activities. Even though it was revealed that peer feedback has a lot of benefits, but most of participants agree that peer feedback activities should be followed by feedback from the teacher. Because they believe the feedback from their teacher is more reliable.

Abstract

The social media has become a potent digital tool to make strong political and social statements globally especially with the internationalization of English. This has been underscored by the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria. The protest, led mainly by Nigerian youths, remains one of the most sweeping social media activisms in the history of the country. The reverberations and revolts which accompanied the initially peaceful protest have brought to the fore the power of the social media. This study identifies the discursive strategies and semiotic resources deployed during the #EndSARS protest to underscore the role of English in the construction and counter construction of discourses. Using Critical Discourse Studies and Multimodal Discourse Analysis, the paper interrogates about 30 purposefully sampled posts from selected WhatsApp platforms during the protests. The study argues that the social media affords users a platform to communicate without the gatekeeper constraints of mainstream media to create group membership, spread ideologies, and to draw national and global attention using the medium of English to cut across geo-political and linguistic boundaries. The study also reveals that while the initial #EndSARS protest constructs an organized, peaceful, and regenerative group of young Nigerians in search of a better Nigeria, a Nigeria of progressive and savvy minds, the counter discourse celebrates disruption, destruction, and death yielding the negative construction of hoodlums, arsonists, looters, and criminals which the #EndSARS protest was supposed to interrogate and repudiate thus temporarily entrenching the status quo and the mentality of business-as-usual in Nigeria.
