The purpose of this research is to discuss some sentences containing prepositional phrase which enables the author to find its ambiguity and its solution. This prepositional phrase analysis is done by studying some previous articles found in Search.ebschost.com. The preposition phrase chosen to be analyzed refers to the preposition phrase which begins with the preposition “with”. The result that can be taken from this research shows that (1) the prepositional phrase may attach only to VP in particular sentence, while on the other hand, (2) it may attach both to VP and to NP so that the meaning of the sentence may be ambiguous. To avoid the ambiguity, the possessive determiners and the relative clauses may be used instead. The qualitative method was employed since it referred to the theoretical frames which consists of previous researches, findings, and theories.

Teachers can measure the competencies that students achieve during the teaching process. In this pandemic era, the activity of the teaching process does not apply in the classroom. However, the teaching process can be applied online using technology. The objectives of this study are: (1) For the online voice assessment feature; (2) Investigate the implementation of online assessment of speaking skills in vocational schools; (3) Research the gaps and solutions to overcome the gaps in the implementation of online voice assessment in the pandemic era with 21st century skills. This study uses a qualitative model description to investigate the case design. The researcher collects data through interviews. The interview was conducted with an English teacher who teaches grade 12 of one of the SMKN in Kota Cirebon. The results of this study showed that the implementation of online speaking skills assessment is using WhatApp as a means of communication in the learning and assessment process, and speaking tasks are guided by using video dialogues and video presentations. The problems experienced by teachers in carrying out online speaking assessment are students' ability to think critically and responsibility to perform and fulfil the tasks; the limited media used in the online speaking skills assessment which is just WhatsApp, the kind of speaking task that is not compatible with 21st century skills. Then there are solutions to counter those problems are by teachers motivating students, guiding students in critical thinking and last but not least the role of government in developing and introducing how to use online platforms.

Abstract

This study, utilizing a narrative inquiry approach, explores the perceptions of eighth semester English education students regarding online learning activities facilitated by their instructors over a period of twenty months during the Covid-19 pandemic. The participants included 30 students who were engaged in online learning during the pandemic. The study employed three audio-recorded post-teaching conferences and three guided group interviews to gather data on the participants' online learning experiences during the pandemic. The qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results indicated that, in addition to the challenges that arise in online learning, such as mastery of learning materials and the volume of assignments given by instructors, students also expected more detailed feedback from their instructors across various teaching contexts, for several reasons. The findings suggest that differences in perceptions regarding online learning and the need for students to develop more independent learning strategies and recommendations are important topics for further discussion.

Abstract

Flipped learning (FL) has been a popular approach for it’s potential in promoting student’s engagement in EFL context particularly. Although it is considered applicable in higher and K-12 education, researches in the latter category are still scarce, especially that reported its implementation in detail. This preliminary action research is involving 14 secondary school students. It focuses on how utilizing FL engage EFL student in learning and what challenges teacher faces during the implementation. Findings indicate that FL implementation combined with teacher’s approach has not yet promoted student’s engagement in learning English. During in-class session, even though the students participated in playing board game in a speaking activity, only few of them kept practicing enthusiastically. Student’s commitment for outclass activities as instructed by the teacher and task completion were still low. The problems identified were that students got less frequent mobile device use after school and their minimum parent’s support. Further action plans are recommended for the follow-up research.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know the forms of mimesis that are represented in the American comicbooks. The characters are mostly well-known fictional superheroes and active worldwide, but usually based in USA. The mimesis analysis was done by comparing some aspects in the real life and those in the comics. Those comparison aspects will be seen and examined to point out the true mimesis used by the writers and how Indonesia is pictured there. The mimesis theory was taken from Krofli? (2011). There, Indonesia was illustrated in three ways, i.e.: 1) by the picture; 2) by a character’s explanation; and 2) by both. The comparison aspects were divided into two parts, i.e.: 1) the condition of Indonesia when they were written; and 2) the plots and their conotative meanings. Those illustrations and comparisons resulted 3 different point of views, i.e., positive, negative, or neutral. There are 30 data analized and it resulted only 12 data with full mimesis similarities and 18 data with partly similarities or completely different mimesis with the real conditions. The other aspects analyzed was about their description of Indonesia as a whole, and it turns out that only 3 data that have positive vibes, 11 data say negative things about Indonesia, and the other 16 are neutral.
