Abstract

Intervention on midwife behavior about early initiation of breastfeeding practice using short message servicePurposeThis research examined the effects of an intervention by delivering short message service towards midwife behavior.MethodsThis research was a quasi-experimental study with pre and post test design using control group. A total of 64 midwives in Palembang participated until data extraction. About 18 themes of short messages were delivered through participants’ mobile phone. Data were analyzed by univariate, bivariate, and linear regression tests.ResultsResults showed that the intervention improved early breastfeeding perceptions by about 7.3% (p= 0.0308). Participants’ knowledge was increased after intervention although there was no significant mean difference between groups. Almost all participants (over 80%) practiced imperfect early breastfeeding, especially in giving information since antenatal care, short-duration, and directing baby for sucking mother’s nipple.ConclusionNot all of participants facilitated early breastfeeding in every birth because of other factors such as unsupported mother and infant’s condition. Early initiation of breastfeeding is not easily implemented by health staff. It is better that midwives could motivate mothers to breastfeed within 1 hour since antenatal care. The important keys are having high commitment and confidence which contribute to midwives’ belief for practicing every step in every birth. We concluded that this research should be continued for long-term-analysis to give more significant results.

Abstract

Evaluation of the implementation of the regional regulation of smoke free areas in Padang Panjang cityPurposeThis study aimed to evaluate the implementation of the regional regulation of smoke free areas (SFAs) in Padang Panjang city.MethodsThis research was a mixed method study with a sequential explanatory design. Accidental sampling was used to select the respondents. Respondents were smokers and non-smokers between 15-50 years of age living in Padang Panjang city since 2009. Informants for the qualitative data were district government authorities, community leaders and non-governmental organizations selected by purposive random sampling. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis. The study was conducted in April-June 2015.ResultsCompared to previous surveys in 2007, 2011 and 2013, smoking prevalence did not decrease in Padang Panjang city. Key informants suggested commitment to SFAs regulation decreased when the mayor changed, since the new mayor is a smoker. The majority of respondents (94%) supported the SFAs regulation, about 90% had not smoked in SFAs and more than 50% of smokers had not smoked in the smoking rooms such as in market (82%) and bus station (78%).ConclusionIt is suggested for the government improve promotion of SFAs regulation, raise awareness of dangers of smoking in markets, public transportation and other public spaces and improve the regulation so its qualification is everyone who wants to be a leader has to be a non smoker.

Abstract

Pattern of concurrent infection of dengue virus serotype in the regional study areas of Yogyakarta Center for Environmental Health and Diseases Control: an analysis of  2013-2015 dataPurposeThis study aimed to determine the pattern in the spread of infection rates with dengue viral serotypes.MethodsThe study was a descriptive research with spatial mapping methods. Data of 132 respondents were collected based on RT-PCR in 2013-2015. The complete address of the village-level patient from the dengue arbovirosis surveillance data of the Center for Environmental Health and Diseases Control Yogyakarta were used to determine the coordinate points with utilization of RBI and Google Earth maps in searching addresses for distribution of case coordinate points. ResultsThere were similarities with the most complex quadruple joint infection rates of DEN in Semarang and Yogjakarta, while Kebumen obtained double DEN level. Three patterns of infection with DEN-1 and DEN-3 have p-value < 0.05 in Semarang in 2014, Sragen in 2015 and Semarang 2013 and 2 patterns in Gunung Kidul 2014 and Kulon Progo 2015. The patterns of infection with DEN-1, DEN-2 and DEN-3 in 2015 were covering Sragen and Semarang in 2013.ConclusionThe most complex areas of infection were Semarang and Yogyakarta. The pattern of most likely cluster infection with DEN-1 and DEN-3 and DEN-1, DEN-2 and DEN-3 allegedly was a result of two infected patients, different serotypes of different mosquitoes or infection of more than one serotype of Ae. aegypti or Ae. albopictus as the main vector.

Abstract

Predictors of tuberculosis recurrence in the district of Bantul PurposeThe purpose of this research was to identify associated factors of TB recurrence. MethodsThe study design was a retrospective cohort. We  used TB cases registered in Bantul regency data in 2003-2014 that consisted of 3418 patients. Sampling was conducted by non-random methods with purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria of 904 samples. The variables measured were: age, sex, drug swallowing supervisor, health service facility, socioeconomic and sputum conversion. We used the Cox proportional hazard model for data analysis to determine the rate of occurrence and timing of the occurrence of an event. ResultsMale sex (HR = 0.91; p-value = 0.17) age> 40 years (HR = 1.03; p-value = 0.59), low income (HR = 0.89; p-value = 0.11) were not predictors of TB recurrence, while hospital treatment (HR = 0.81; p-value = 0.00), no sputum conversion (HR = 0.58; p-value = 0.00), treatment failure (HR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.37-0.64), and treatment of less than 6 months (HR = 0.008; 95% CI: 0.00-0.07) were predictors of TB recurrence. There were 56 (6.18%) of 904 patients who experienced relapse after cured or failed treatment. The average patient relapsed after 17 months of completion of the first treatment. ConclusionHealth facilities, sputum conversion, end-of-treatment status and duration of treatment are pulmonary TB recurrence factors, and as a result can be used to predict TB recurrence in the district of Bantul.
