Abstract

This study intended to look at the connection between students' achievement in mathematics and their test anxiety at higher secondary level. Data were collected from 205 students in six schools located in Gazole Block, Malda district, West Bengal, using a descriptive survey method. For selected participants, a multistage method of sampling was employed. Data were gathered using the Anxiety Test Scale for Students, developed and standardized by Asamoah (2018) guaranteeing validity and reliability. For data analysis, the mean, t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient techniques were applied. The results showed that there were notable differences in test anxiety between urban and rural students, as well as between male and female at the higher secondary level. However, there was no discernible difference in math proficiency between males and females or between rural and urban students. A negative correlation was observed between test anxiety and achievement in mathematics, suggesting that higher levels of test anxiety correspond to lower mathematics achievement scores. Conversely, addressing test anxiety among higher secondary students may contribute to enhance their performance in mathematics.

Abstract

This paper explores the assessment of student projects in fashion design by comparing the evaluations of teachers and students (peers). Peer assessment (PA) is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool for enhancing students' assessment skills and providing alternative perspectives on project quality. However, concerns persist regarding the reliability and validity of peer assessments compared to those of teachers. To address this gap, this study aims to  compare the assessments of teachers and students, focusing on variables such as Self, FIT, COLOUR, DRAWN, and BEAUTY in fashion design projects. The study used simple random sampling to sample 10 designs of Higher National Diploma (HND) two students enrolled in the fashion department of the Creative Arts Faculty. Teh descriptitve and correlation analysis methods were used to analyse the sample gathered.  The Descriptives analysis revealed differences in the mean scores and variability between the Student and Teaching Staff groups for the variables Self, COLOUR, FIT, DRAWP, and BEAUTY. Again, a correlation analysis revealed strong positive correlations between various self-perception categories. This results practically implies that peer assessment is a requisite assessment mehtod in higher education, especially for practical courses such as fashion design. Collaborative assessment, especially among peers is therefore recommended to help students build confidence and ensure a sense of ownership of their projects coupled with sharpening their practical skills.

Abstract

Aim: Childhood wasting is a significant public health issue throughout the world, notably in developing countries. 8.4% of Bangladeshi young children under five years old are currently wasted, which has an effect on the country's overall public health outcomes. The study's aim was to determine childhood wasting among under five years old in Bangladesh. Methods: The study's dataset was obtained from the country-wide Bangladesh Demographic Health and Survey (BDHS) in 2017–2018. The study sample contained 30,830 under-five children. The associations between specific independent factors and nutritional status were assessed using chi-square tests, and the risk factors associated with early childhood wasting were found using binary logistic regression. Results: The majority of the children (51.6%) in the study's sample were male, and they resided in rural areas the most often. From 17% in 2007 to 8% in 2017, the frequency of childhood wasting has reduced over time. The study also discovered that mothers' overweight/obese and underweight body mass indices, as well as their relative age (24–35 months and 36–47 months), were risk factors linked to childhood wasting in Bangladesh. Conclusion: This study presents the significant risk factors for severe child wasting in Bangladesh. Countries that suffer from childhood malnourishment may use the findings of this study for further research.

Abstract

This Qualitative Multiple Case Study was conducted to explore teachers’ experiences under the Human Resource Management practices of school heads. Selected elementary school teachers from public and private schools, and their school heads from Pagadian City Division were interviewed. This study has emerged from the major components Human Resource Management Practices, Challenges, and Coping Mechanisms of School Heads during the first Emergency School Years. Based on the components they experienced under their school heads, they were provided a clear picture of teachers’ tasks or activities, planned for the school in general, managed their workloads, listened to teachers’ voices, offered technical assistance, considered teachers’ emergency excuses, realigned budget for teachers’ supply and find means to support teachers. However, the school head also faced challenges such as communication due to the parade of tasks and insufficient resources for module printing. Nevertheless, they were able to solve these challenges. Different modalities call for different tasks, different tasks demand different preparations, different preparations advance to level of operations. School Heads resilient attitude toward the goal of negating these uncontrollable stretches and putting colleagues’ contexts on top of decision making save the day.

Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of Single Fathers. Peculiar experiences like causes of broken marriages, struggles in raising their children, strategies in managing struggles, and future plans for their families were highlighted. Phenomenological approach was utilized to extract meanings from the participants’ constructs. Transcripts were analyzed using the Moustakas’ (1994) 8-step procedure. The SFs’ broken marriages are caused by infidelity, economic challenges, abuse of substance, and differences of religious belief. The SFs were burdened with fulfilling and managing multiple responsibilities, and attending to financial obligations. The SFs’ unwavering faith to the Almighty, their humbleness, and genuine love for their children enabled them to navigate the challenges of single parenthood. The SFs look forward to prioritizing the educational plan for their children, and developing themselves to become worthy and ready of building a complete and united family. The essence of the phenomenon is: The Single Fathers shouldered a heavy burden of responsibilities and financial obligations, and while raising their children alone, they drew strength from unwavering faith, humility, and a deep-seated love for their children, and planned to prioritize their children's education and personal development in pursuit of rebuilding a complete and united family once again.

Abstract

Field study courses are part of the university’s curriculum, which pre-service teachers are required to take. These courses allow them to apply what they have learned from their chosen programs and gain real-world experience in the teaching profession. The journey in field study is an excellent way to learn about the responsibilities of a teacher and to develop one’s growth in professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes. This study described the challenges and opportunities encountered, as well as the coping mechanisms used, by pre-service teachers during their field study journey. Seven pre-service teachers from a Philippine state university, enrolled in the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English during the academic year 2023-2024, were purposely chosen as participants of the study. A qualitative narrative inquiry research design and validated researcher-made, open-ended interview questions were used. The findings revealed that the student teachers were most challenged in adjusting to a new environment, lesson planning, adjusting to their role as practicing teachers, dealing with personal struggles, and managing personal expenses. Meanwhile, the study revealed that the pre-service teachers encountered opportunities primarily through learning from resource teachers, trying out the teacher's role, handling students, adapting to various teaching-learning environments, using technology in teaching, and learning from students. The coping strategies they used included personal motivation or willingness to learn, effective time management, balancing personal struggles as student teachers, applying learning theories, applying previous learning and life experiences, and personal ingenuity. These findings may provide educational institutions with opportunities to intensify and improve their practice teaching curriculum.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the practices of Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) English majors in dealing with English language anxiety. Through interviews with the eleven research participants, peers, and classmates, the study identifies triggers, manifestations, and coping strategies associated with language anxiety among BSED English students. Findings reveal that past negative experiences, fear of criticism, lack of confidence, and performance pressure contribute to language anxiety, manifested in various physical and emotional symptoms. Coping mechanisms include self-talk, self-acceptance, breathing techniques, and preparation, which highlight the importance of psychological and practical approaches in managing anxiety. The study concludes that language anxiety poses significant challenges for BSED English students but can be effectively managed through targeted interventions and support strategies. Recommendations include integrating anxiety-reduction techniques into teaching practices, providing opportunities for practice and feedback, fostering a supportive classroom atmosphere, offering mindfulness workshops, and conducting further research on effective interventions. Implementation of these recommendations can enhance students' academic performance and well-being, creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for English language learners.

Abstract

This study focused the efficacy of the School Readiness Initiative programme in the assessment of Early Childhood Development (ECD) learners in Buhera District. A qualitative case study was used to establish the effectiveness of the School Readiness Initiative on the assessment of Early Childhood Development learners. Ten teachers from different schools were purposively sampled. Questionnaires, interviews and observations were used to collect data from the participants. Data were presented in narratives and later analysed in themes. The results revealed that the School Readiness Initiative programme has positive effects in as far as Early Childhood Development learners` assessment is concerned. Some challenges in implementing the School Readiness Initiative programme in schools were poor internet connectivity, prolonged power cuts, and lack of expertise to use the Smart Tablet for Early Learning Assessment (STELA) tool on the part of the ECD teachers. The study therefore, recommended continual training of ECD teachers on various assessment techniques including the use of the STELA tool. It was also recommended that schools should have alternative sources of power such as solar energy.
