Abstract

This study aimed to examine how Sophie's identity is conveyed through signs (icon, index, and symbol) in the film The School for Good and Evil. The type of this study is qualitative research and uses descriptive research design. The data consists of visual and verbal signs. The data were collected by repeatedly watching the film, selecting key scenes, documenting relevant visuals, coding them according to Peirce's semiotic consisting of triadic model and types of signs, and validating interpretations through secondary references. The data analysis employed Peirce's semiotic framework and Erikson's psychological development concept, which integrated with stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis shows that icons depict Sophie's unstable self-perception, while indexes reveal the connection between her inner conflicts and external effects that indicate her identity confusion, and symbols depict the social and cultural expectations around her. These signs collectively illustrate Sophie's struggle between her authentic self and the identity imposed by external pressures. By uncovering how the film's semiotic elements guide the interpretation of identity conflict, this study highlights the role of cinema in constructing and influencing perceptions of self-worth, beauty, and morality in media narratives.

Abstract

Purpose: Ambiguity is a phenomenon that is inevitable in the process of constructing meaning, while metaphors are attempts to comprehend and perceive something through connecting it to something else. This research aims to explore the ambiguity and conceptual metaphor in the American Eagle campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney. Methodology: The method applied in this study is qualitative research with textual analysis approach toward campaign narration including slogans, campaign titles, advertising dialogue, video narratives, and product descriptions. Results: The findings show that in the American Eagle campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney contain lexical and structural ambiguity in the form of phonetic similarity, semantic broadening, and lack of clarity in syntaxis. Applications/Originality/Value: This research also found that there is a metaphor a concept existed in in the American Eagle campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to identify the types of conceptual metaphors that appear in grief narratives on the Medium.com platform and to explain how these metaphors represent the grief experiences of the authors.Methodology: This qualitative study deploys content analysis. The data consist of all sentences containing metaphorical expressions about grief collected through documentation. Ten narratives on the theme of grief published on the Medium.com platform were selected as the source of data. The data were analysed using Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) by the Pragglejaz Group (2007). Results: The results show two types of metaphor in stories i.e., ontological metaphors, which are more dominant, and structural metaphors. Moreover, the metaphor embraces various representations such as grief as a burden, ocean, physical strength, wild animal, or self-disintegration. Structural metaphors also appear, especially those that describe grief as physical pain and an expression of love. Overall, metaphors function as cognitive tools that help writers organize, understand, and express complex experiences of grief that are difficult to describe literally. Applications/Originality/Value: This study contributes to the development of metaphor studies in emotional discourse. Further research is recommended to expand the data corpus, compare across cultures or languages, and explore the use of metaphors in the context of grief therapy.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research aims to identify the forms of emotion regulation of the main characters in the film Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice) using Gross and John's (2003) Emotion Regulation Process Model, and to analyze their narrative representation through Chatman's (1978) Story and Discourse framework. The study employed the documentation method for data collection and Thematic Analysis for interpretation. This analysis involved Theory Operationalization and Initial Coding, where Gross and John's framework classified psychological forms and Chatman's framework categorized narrative structures. The research findings indicate that healing and successful emotional regulation must begin with adaptive antecedent-focused strategies. Narratively, the film critiques the suppression of expression driven by collectivist cultural norms and ideologically promotes emotional openness as an absolute prerequisite for achieving narrative New Equilibrium. This research contributes to providing an integrated reading between clinical psychology and cinematic studies. Practically, this study serves as a foundation for educators and counselors to utilize film as an educational medium in mental health literacy programs in schools.

Abstract

Purpose: Conversational implicature is important to study because it helps people understand the implied meanings in conversation. Therefore, this study aims to describe the use of conversational implicatures found in movie script Wicked (2024) and the results can be used as a source of pragmatic teaching materials for undergraduate students. The focus of this study includes identifying types of implicatures, and forms of flouting conversational maxims in the movie script Wicked (2024). Methodology: This study used qualitative descriptive method. The data source is all dialogue in movie script Wicked (2024) that contains implied meanings or flouting of conversational maxims. Data collection techniques were carried out using reading and note taking techniques while data analysis was conducted by using Grice's (1975) theory of cooperative principle, which focuses on types of implicature and forms of flouting conversational maxims. Results: This study examined 36 utterances and identified two types of conversational implicatures: generalized and particularized, with generalized implicature dominating the findings at 52.8%, meaning that most of the implied meanings can be understood without specific context. In addition, four form of flouting conversational maxims were found, namely flouting maxim of Quantity, Quality, Manner, and Relation, with flouting of quantity dominating the findings at 33.3%, illustrates that characters in the movie provide excessive or insufficient information to convey a particular meaning.Applications/Originality/Value: The results of this analysis can be used as authentic teaching materials in pragmatic teaching. Thus, this study not only enriches pragmatic studies but also provides an interesting alternative learning medium.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the types and functions of assertive speech acts in The Twilight Saga novel. Methodology: The data of this qualitative text analysis were the speeches of the main female character, Bella, which contains an act of assertive speech. The data were collected using document analysis and were analyzer using the framework of Searle's speech acts theory (1969). Results: The findings show all types of assertive speech acts used by Bella, namely, stating, claiming, describing, reporting and concluding. Furthermore, stating is the most dominant category, reflecting the emotional transparency and honesty which are typical of the romance-fantasy genre. Correspondingly, while concluding is the least due to the storyline's emphasis on feelings rather than logical conclusions. In addition, the functions of assertive speech acts are binding the speaker to the truth of the proposition in stating, claiming, describing, reporting and concluding. Applications/Originality/Value: These results imply that the act of emphatic speech in romantic fiction plays a central role in shaping character intimacy, emotional development, and thematic depth. Future research could expand data across sagas, compare novel-film adaptations, or include multimodal analysis to explore how assertive actis shift across media and narrative contexts.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the challenges faced by English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta in achieving formal language proficiency, with a particular emphasis on vocabulary development as a crucial component of communicative English proficiency in academic writing. The research seeks to identify how vocabulary limitations hinder students' ability to construct formal, accurate, and contextually appropriate expressions in their essays. Methodology: This study analyzes ten student essays purposively selected from academic writing tasks. The analysis framework was adapted from Hymes' (1972) and Canale and Swain's (1980) communicative competence model, focusing on clarity, vocabulary use, formal register, and identified challenges.Results: Findings indicate that students generally demonstrate communicative clarity but struggle with lexical depth and formality. While their ideas are coherently expressed, most rely on basic vocabulary and exhibit inconsistent control over academic register. Occasional attempts at lexical sophistication were observed but were not consistently sustained, reflecting transitional proficiency between informal and academic discourse. Applications/Originality/Value: This study highlights the essential role of vocabulary enrichment and register awareness in developing communicative proficiency in academic writing. Its originality lies in analysing how vocabulary-related challenges specifically affect students' ability to use English formally in written contexts, offering pedagogical insights for enhancing academic vocabulary instruction and formal writing competence in higher education.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to classify, identify, and analyse the various forms of code-switching that are present in Ika Natassa's Divortiare. The study focuses on how the novel's narrative style, emotional expression, and characterization are influenced by the alternation between Indonesian and English. Methodology: A qualitative text analysis design is used in this study. The novel's bilingual Indonesian and English utterances make up the primary data. Documentation technique, such as repeated reading, underlining, and methodical classification of instances of code-switching, were used to collect data. The analysis adheres to the qualitative methods of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing described by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The primary analytical tools used were Poplack's (1980) structural framework and Gumperz's (1982) functional model, which were backed by pertinent sociolinguistic and bilingualism theories. Results: According to the results, Divortiare demonstrates three different forms of code-switching: tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. Specifically, the novel's code-switching serves a number of communicative purposes, such as message qualification, interjection, repetition, and personalization. The analysis shows that English insertions function as stylistic devices that reflect contemporary urban Indonesian culture, heighten emotion, and create character identity in addition to acting as linguistic alternations. Applications/Originality/Value: By illustrating how structural types and communicative functions interact to create character voice and narrative meaning, this study advances literary linguistics. The results show how bilingual expression functions as a stylistic tool in modern Indonesian fiction, enhancing affective tone, influencing interpersonal relationships, and portraying bilingual speakers in social contexts.

Abstract

Purpose: (1) To identify the ideologies of users as reflected in comments on CNN News Instagram posts about the meeting between Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Volodymyr Zelensky, (2) to examine how Instagram functions as a social media platform in shaping public discourse about the Trump–Zelensky meeting.Methodology: descriptive qualitative with Teun A van Dijk's critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach, which covers three dimensions, namely macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. A total of 160 clean comments were collected through purposive sampling. These comments were selected based on the completeness of the arguments, the use of evaluative language, the clarity of the theme, and their suitability for CDA analysis. Four selected comments were analyzed in depth. Teun A van Dijk's (1998) socio-cognitive approach is used to understand Instagram's role in the process of shaping public discourse.Results: Four main ideologies were found in the Instagram comments: anti-US power rejection ideology, diplomatic ethics, anti-Zelensky nationalism and populism, and pro-peace. In the socio-cognitive analysis, Instagram acts as an active and persuasive space for discourse production, a place for ideological reproduction and negotiation, and algorithmic visibility to reinforce the dominance of certain ideologies.Applications/Originality/Value: Instagram as a discursive party that shapes public opinion on international political issues. This research can be used as a reference for studies on digital political communication, discourse analysis on social media, and the influence of algorithms on public opinion formation.Keywords: critical discourse analyasis (CDA), teun A. van dijk, instagram comments, political ideology, trump and zelensky, public discourse, social media.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the perspectives of English Language (EFL) teachers at the junior high school level towards TBLT, how teachers design and implement task-based speaking classes, especially regarding how to improve students' confidence, collaboration, and speaking performance, as well as the challenges and methods used to overcome these challenges. Methodology: The researchers employed a qualitative descriptive strategy. Data was collected at Al Abidin Islamic Junior High School in Surakarta through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with three English teachers, and documentation. The data analysis approach adopted by Miles and Huberman (1994) included data reduction, data presentation, and Results: The findings of this study indicate that teachers have very positive attitudes toward TBLT, are more flexible, motivated, and prefer using the TBLT approach compared to traditional techniques such as PPP and CLT. Teachers stated that they structure assignments according to students' abilities, needs, and learning styles, and use diagnostic tests to differentiate assignments. Group presentations, role-playing, and realistic simulations such as vlogs and situational discussions are also frequently used in its implementation. Differences in student ability levels, limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and time constraints are obstacles encountered in learning activities. Teachers address these issues with personalized instruction, language support, and the creation of an engaging learning environment through games and other activities.Applications/Originality/Value: This study has the advantage of emphasizing the importance of a teacher in providing appropriate speaking activities to increase confidence, collaboration, and speaking performance in English as a Foreign Language, as well as providing practical solutions to overcome challenges in the classroom. This shows that TBLT is a versatile and effective conceptual framework.
