Abstract

Language errors are defined as violations or deviations from established language norms and rules. In practice, students' written work in the form of essays can be evaluated based on content, accuracy in word choice, sentence structure, and spelling. Based on this premise, the present study aims to identify the quality of students' descriptive text writing and the types of language errors that occur among students. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects of the study were seventh-grade students at SMP N 1 Gatak, and the data consisted of students' descriptive texts. The findings indicate the presence of various language errors in the descriptive essays produced by the seventh-grade students of SMP N 1 Gatak. These language errors can be classified into five categories: spelling errors, word formation errors, morphological errors, and syntactic and semantic errors. Overall, the findings demonstrate that students still require intensive training in grammar and spelling in order to produce essays with accurate structure and meaning. Therefore, Indonesian language instruction is expected to place greater emphasis on the contextual application of linguistic rules, enabling students not only to understand theoretical concepts but also to apply them effectively in producing well-structured and accurate written texts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the kinship between Javanese and Banjarese spoken in Central Kalimantan using a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach. The quantitative method is applied through lexicostatistical techniques, while the qualitative method focuses on analyzing linguistic similarities between the two languages. The main problem addressed in this study is the limited number of comparative studies that specifically examine the lexical relationship between Javanese and Banjarese. This research contributes by offering a detailed mapping of lexical similarities and sound change patterns, as well as providing recent empirical data from a region that has not been widely studied. The research data consist of 207 basic vocabulary items from the Swadesh list collected through observation and conversational methods. Four informants participated, including two native speakers of Javanese and two native speakers of Banjarese. The analysis was conducted by grouping vocabulary into categories, identifying pairs of words with similar forms and cognates, and describing phonemic correspondence patterns. The results show 44 pairs of related words. Identical pairs are the most frequent, totaling 26 word pairs, while the remaining pairs exhibit sound change patterns. These include phonemic correspondences between /a/ and /e/, /a/ and /o/, /u/ and /o/, the omission of the phoneme /h/, and the change of the phoneme /b/ to /w/. The percentage of relatedness is 21%, placing Javanese and Banjarese in the language stoch category according to Swadesh’s classification. These findings indicate regular and historically explainable phonemic similarities and differences, contributing to the study of language relatedness in Central Kalimantan.

Abstract

This study aims to map the variety of topics in descriptive texts written by seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu. Previous studies have not extensively mapped topics in descriptive texts written by junior high school students. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing 14 texts. The results show seven topic categories, with animals dominating five texts, followed by places in three texts and food and drinks in two texts, while objects, figures/families, concepts/abstracts, and plants only appeared once. These findings show a tendency for students to choose concrete objects that are close to their daily experiences. This study contributes to the understanding of students' topic selection patterns, which teachers can utilize to develop descriptive writing learning strategies that are more suitable for the characteristics of their students.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of sarcasm in the comment section of the official Instagram account @Pertamina as a form of public reaction to energy services and policy issues. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a pragmatic orientation, the study analyzed comments, of which 126 were identified as containing sarcastic expressions. The data were examined using Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis model and classified based on Camp's (2011) framework, which distinguishes propositional, lexical, and illocutionary sarcasm. The findings show that propositional sarcasm dominates (68 instances), followed by lexical (34) and illocutionary sarcasm (24). This distribution indicates that netizens frequently employ sarcasm to express direct and explicit criticism toward Pertamina, a state-owned enterprise responsible for sensitive public services such as fuel pricing and policy transparency. The study's contribution lies in extending Camp's theoretical model to the Indonesian digital context and in highlighting how sarcasm functions as a mechanism of social control and civic engagement. The findings suggest that sarcasm plays a significant role in shaping public discourse and evaluating institutional performance on social media.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze bilingual speech in a selected episode of the Makna Talks podcast featuring Nicholas Saputra. It focuses on identifying types of bilingualism-compound, coordinate, and subordinate-based on Weinreich and Martinet's (2010) framework and explaining how these bilingual patterns function within conversational discourse.Methodology: This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Eighteen utterances containing Indonesian–English language alternation were collected by observing and transcribing the selected podcast episode. The utterances were identified, classified, and analyzed according to Weinreich and Martinet's typology of bilingualism. Relevant theories and previous studies were also reviewed to support interpretation. Results: The findings show that only two types of bilingualism appear in the data: compound and coordinate bilingualism. Compound bilingualism is the dominant type, occurring in 14 utterances (77.8%), indicating an integrated use of Indonesian and English within the same units of meaning. Coordinate bilingualism appears in 4 utterances (22.2%), mainly in contexts involving quotations or discourse framing.Applications/Originality/Value: This study contributes to sociolinguistic research by demonstrating how bilingual speech operates in informal podcast discourse. It highlights bilingualism as a communicative strategy for identity construction, audience engagement, and media performance in contemporary Indonesian digital contexts.

Abstract

Purpose: The study aims to identify the type of speech acts found in positive comments on the TikTok trend "30 Days English speaking Challenge" and to explore the contextual function of these speech acts in the comments section. Methodology: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The data in this study were collected using purposive sampling by selecting positive English comments from the video trends in TikTok account @alelcipta uploaded from July to August 2025. The comments were chosen based on relevance to the content of the challenge videos and their suitability for the research focus in terms of speech acts. The data were analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques as proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994) which consist of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The technique used included documentation by taking screenshots of comments and analyzed according to Searle's (1979) classification of speech acts-assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. Then the data analyzed in greater depth to represent the functions or meanings behind the types of speech acts. Results: This study shows there are five types of speech acts identified, except for declarative speech acts. A total of 145 positive comments were found, with the details : assertive (30), directive (37), commissive (7), and expressive (71). Applications/Originality/Value: This study has the potential to highlight the role of positive feedback in building self-confidence and motivation to learn, especially for English learners in online communities, as well as enriching the creation of a supportive and constructive environment on social media.
