Abstract

The aim of this research is to examines how Taylor Swift's Folklore represents the psychological and emotional dimensions of emerging adulthood. Focusing on six selected songs "The 1," "Exile," "Cardigan," "Mirrorball," "This Is Me Trying," and "August". The study analyses how metaphors, narrative imagery, and lyrical symbols construct meanings related to identity exploration, instability, emotional vulnerability, nostalgia, feeling in-between, and sense of possibilities. The research employs qualitative descriptive using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, examining denotative and connotative meanings within six selected songs from Folklore. The interpretation is guided by Arnett's (2000) Emerging Adulthood Theory. The analysis is also supported by Miles and Huberman's interactive data analysis model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings demonstrated that Folklore constructs emerging adulthood as a period of emotional turbulence, fragile self-concept, nostalgia, coping behaviour, and identity negotiation. Symbols such as Mirrorball, cardigan, and seasonal imagery reflect vulnerability, memory, and transition. These findings demonstrate that contemporary song lyrics function not only as artistic expression but also as cultural texts that reflect psychological development during emerging adulthood. This study contributes to literary and cultural studies by showing how popular music articulates emotional meanings connected to life transitions and identify formations.

Abstract

This research examines the forms and expressions of emotional distress expressed in the lyrics of NIKI Zefanya's songs on the album Nicole (2022) and explores these expressions as a manifestation of the author's mental state. This study also clarifies the reasons for exploring emotional distress as a central theme in this album through Wellek and Warren's (1949) Literary Psychological Approach. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a focus on literary psychology. Data was collected from twelve song lyrics from Nicole's album, analyzed using the method of close reading and data recording, according with the Interactive Analysis Approach of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). This study identifies and explains five main forms of emotional distress: Heartbreak, Longing, Emotional Collapse, Loneliness, and Regret. utilizing the psychology of the author approach. The findings show that emotional distress is a prominent theme, manifested through the concepts of Loss, Regret, and Self-Healing. The lyrics reflect high emotional vulnerability and authenticity, which resonate deeply with the author's personal experiences, growth, and self-healing process. This research contributes to Literary Psychology by utilizing song lyrics as a medium to analyze the author's emotional and mental state as reflected in their creative works. Nicole's album explores not only musically, but also as a documentation of the author's self-expression and mental state thru the thematic approach of emotional distress. The results of this research can be applied in the field of Education, specifically to enhance students' emotional and mental capacity in understanding modern literary works such as song lyrics.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the methods employed by Gen Z students in English Language Education program to practice listening to English songs through Spotify as a learning tool. It specifically investigates how they listen, how they learn, and how they perceive the impact of this habit on their vocabulary, listening comprehension, and pronunciation.Methodology: This study seeks to examine a qualitative descriptive method with open-ended interviews involving 20 Gen Z students (cohort 2024-2025) who regularly use Spotify for practicing listening to English songs. Interview data were audio-recorded, then transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns in students’ listening routines, repeated listening habits, vocabulary learning strategies, and perceived impacts while learning through Spotify. Results: The findings demonstrate that students incorporate Spotify into their daily routines (e.g., during commutes, studying, or household chores) and participate in repeated listening to progress from mere melody recognition to understanding narrative meanings, expressions, and vocabulary definitions within song lyrics. Some strategies are reading the lyrics, using AI and translation tools, and taking notes.Applications/Originality/Value: This study contributes to Spotify as a self-regulated learning environment where students appropriate commercial streaming platforms for educational purposes. It proposes integrating playlist-based assignments and lyric-focused vocabulary journals into formal instruction to effectively bridge students’ informal digital practices with academic language learning objectives.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to classify the types and intentions of expressive speech acts of the main character, Victor Van Dort, in Tim Burton's 2005 Corpse Bride Movie. Methodology: Utilizing a qualitative approach, this text analysis investigates Victor Van Dort's utterances containing expressive speech acts. The data were collected from the movie script using document analysis. The data were analysed deploying the framework of speech act theory by Searle (1979) and contextual pragmatics based on Holmes (2001) to understand the situational and social contexts that influence speech and its meaning.Results: The analysis found 33 expressive speech acts i.e. eight apologizing, seven agreements, five attitudes, five exclamations, three wishes, two thanking, two lamentation, and one greeting. These speech acts mainly describe psychological conditions and emotional reactions. It is important to note the absence of speech acts such as congratulations or condolances, which indicates that the focus of the narrative is on personal emotional experiences rather than social rituals. The meaning of each expressive speech act has also been identified.Applications/Originality/Value: This study highlights the importance of how expressive speech acts contribute to deepening emotions and character development to strengthen the movie's narratives.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims investigated the inaccurate use of politeness and honorific Indonesian in oral and written communication between students and lecturers. Methodology: The data source focuses on the use of polite and disrespectful sentences in communicating with lecturers via whatsapp or talking directly. Which explains how students can distinguish polite or disrespectful sentences in communication with lecturers. The Data was collected using classroom observation and the distribution of questions regarding politeness or impoliteness in sentences provided online using WhatsApp. By using polite and disrespectful sentences in questions, students are required to provide a reason why they choose the answer. Results: The first results show that the factors of strength (P), distance (D), and placement position (R) strongly influence the interaction in the classroom between lecturers and student. This is reflected in the choice of greeting, politeness style, and speaking style. The second finding, a survey of students, showed that 85-86% of respondents refused to use "Saudara (you)" to teachers because it was considered rude, and 27-32% began to perceive "Anda (you)" as a form of disrespect. Applications/Originality/Value: The total number of words in the abstract should not exceed 250 words. The findings of this study can help students understand the importance of politeness in academic communication and help lecturers understand the changes in communication patterns occurring among the younger generation.

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the patterns of code mixing used in Maudy Ayunda's podcast entitled "3 Hal Penting untuk Meraih Kesuksesan". This study aims primarily to specify the type of code mixing and analyse the reason of code mixing employed by the speakers in the video.Methodology: This study employed qualitative method. This study also utilized Muysken's (2000) theory to determine the classifications of code mixing and Hoffman's (1991) theory to analyse the reasons of code mixing used in podcast. The researcher made a transcript of the research subject, then analysed and grouped the obtained utterances from the types of code mixing in accordance with the theory used.Results: This study discovered 402 utterances in total and inferred that three kinds of code mixing by Muysken exist in the video. First, insertion is discovered 305 cases. Second, alternation is 71 cases. Last, there are 26 cases of data congruent lexicalization. Furthermore, the seven types reason of code mixing by Hoffman is also discovered by talking about a particular topic being commonly found in 328 cases. Quoting somebody else is 3 cases, be emphatic is 41 cases, interjection is 3 cases, repetition used for clarification is 8 cases, Intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor is 8 cases, and expression of a group identity is 10 cases.Applications/Originality/Value: This study provides insights code mixing used to bond closeness, enhance message clarity, and convey group identity

Abstract

Purpose: This study discusses how myths are represented in the film How to Train Your Dragon (2025) based on Barthes' Semiotic Analysis Model and how the myths affect the characters in the film. Methodology: This research is qualitative descriptive study with subject is the live-action film How to Train Your Dragon and the object is scenes related to myths in the film, with the data collected through intensive scene documentation and purposively selected based on thematic, narrative, and symbolic relevance, then analyzed using Barthes' Semiotics Analysis Model at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth.Results: The result of the study shows that this film constructs interrelated myths about responsibility-based leadership, the importance of empathy in human relationships with other creatures, and a shift in values from conflict to cooperation. In addition, these myths also affect character development, as seen in Hiccup's increasingly empathetic moral changes, the trusting relationship between him and Toothless, and Stoick's efforts to balance traditional values with new values.Applications/Originality/Value: Future researchers can examine the same film with a more specific focus on educational values such as empathy, moral courage, and cooperation, or explore the representation of myths in other films and learn how these myths can be used as a medium for teaching moral values in a community.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze how religion functions as a political tool to maintain and expand power in Hilary Mantel's novel Wolf Hall, focusing on narrative strategies and textual indicators that show the use of religion as a political instrument.Methodology: This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with primary data in the form of dialogue, narrative descriptions, and character interactions in Wolf Hall (2009). Data were collected through intensive reading, text marking, thematic grouping, and supporting theoretical sources. The analysis combines Foucault's theory of the power of knowledge to interpret ideological control mechanisms and Abrams' theory of narrative elements to explore how character, plot, setting, and point of view are used to depict religion as a tool of political domination. Data validation follows the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion verification to ensure analytical accuracy.Results: The results show that religion in Wolf Hall functions as a strategic mechanism to restructure political authority, legitimize state power, build national identity, and shape collective obedience. The novel shows how religious discourse influences the psychological and social spheres, thereby enabling the consolidation of political control.Applications/Originality/Value: This research involves literary, political, and religious discourse studies, demonstrating how historical fiction reveals religion within power structures. This research explains the importance of Foucault and Abrams' theoretical frameworks for analyzing political narratives in literary works. This research can provide a reference for further studies on religion, ideology, and representations of power in narrative texts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of Shirohige's leadership representation in the anime One Piece. Specifically, this study aims to identify how this representation is constructed Semiotically, the motives behind its application, and the leadership typology it reflects. This research used a qualitative approach with the main subject was the anime One Piece, focusing on the scenes and interactional dialogues between Shirohige and his crew, particularly in the Marineford Arc and flashback scenes. The data were collected through visual recording and transcription of dialog from selected scenes that depicted Shirohige's leadership. The analysis was conducted systematically by using Peirce's triadic model. The results of the study show that Shirohige's leadership through Icons, Indexes, and Symbols collectively produce the Interpretant of affective loyalty and sacrifice-based authority. The motives of Shirohige's leadership centers on identification as a psychological foundation. Functionality as a survival strategy. Symbolism as an ideological justification for group morality. Shirohige's leadership style is hybrid because it combines elements of Paternalistic, Charismatic, Transformational, and Prophetic leadership, ultimately leading to Kinship-Based Leadership with a focus on moral integrity and compassion. This study is expected to contribute to popular literature studies by having another anime as the subject of Semiotic analysis or by investigating leadership in other kinds of literary works. The findings of this study can also be used as a sample of reference for case study material or teaching material in character education and leadership courses to analyze the construction of moral values and effective leadership models.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how students view sequential multimedia and traditional approaches while learning narrative text. 32 students were selected to participate in this study. This study uses mixed-method design, followed by student reflections, documentation and classroom observation to provide the triangulation. frequency and percentage were used to represent the quantitative data. For qualitative data, thematic analysis was used to identify the reasons for students' learning preferences. The results showed that only 28% of students considered English difficult. Only one among 32 students reported that learning narrative text was boring. 69% of students stated that they preferred multimedia learning over traditional approaches. Most of the reasons they chose multimedia learning were because they stated it was more fun and exciting. This study demonstrates that students will not feel bored when learning narrative text when teachers apply a combination of multimedia and traditional methods sequentially.
