Abstract

The Yogyakarta Platenalbum manuscript is a manuscript that tells about Javanese culture, especially Yogyakarta. This text contains various cultures, such as children's games, palaces, people's weddings, ceremonies inside and outside the court, tales, wayang, performances, procedures, customs, agriculture, and one text that explains Candraning Wanita. Using literature library research, this article discusses people's wedding attire in the Yogyakarta Platenalbum manuscript No. 26-30. From this research process, several models of clothing were used during commoners' wedding celebrations. The clothes worn by the people are certainly different from those used by the royal family. This is caused by differences in social status in Javanese society, especially in Yogyakarta and Surakarta. In different moments or processions, but still in a series of weddings, the bride and groom wear different clothes. Not only the bride and groom, but the family and neighbors involved in a series of wedding rituals, also wear clothes regulated by Javanese custom.

Abstract

This study investigates the treatment of mental disorders recorded in traditional manuscripts, specifically the Kitab Tibb and Usada from Malay and Balinese traditions. The research reveals that the Kitab Tibb details eight types of mental disorders, while the Usada categorizes ten, including eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). The comparative literature method is employed to analyze the symptoms of these disorders as documented in both texts. One of the key aspects highlighted in the study is the importance of understanding the cultural and historical context surrounding mental health treatment. The social and political changes occurring in the 15th and 16th centuries had a significant influence on how communities perceived and addressed mental health issues. By documenting the medicinal knowledge available in the Kitab Tibb and Usada, the study suggests that traditional medicine can serve as a valuable alternative for individuals who may not find modern approaches suitable. This research opens up opportunities for the integration of traditional and contemporary medical practices, aiming to create more comprehensive solutions for treating mental disorders. Ultimately, it seeks to enrich the mental health field by promoting alternative approaches and encouraging further research into the effectiveness of traditional remedies.

Abstract

This research examines the role of the tradition of tepung tawar, particularly in the Ulu manuscript 93 E 1 in the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, as social capital in resolving conflicts and reconciling disputes. Social conflicts, especially in social relations, are increasing in a competitive modern society. As a nation rich in local wisdom values, Indonesia has great potential to resolve conflicts peacefully by utilizing traditional wisdom. One of the local traditions that can be used as social capital is the tepung tawar tradition. This research has two main objectives, namely to reveal the content of Ulu manuscript 93 E 1 related to the tepung tawar tradition and to analyze its relevance to the practice of tepung tawar in reconciling conflicts in modern society. To achieve these objectives, a descriptive qualitative method is used to document and analyze the Jampi Tepung text in the manuscript. This approach involves an in-depth text study by identifying key elements of the rituals and prayers contained in the manuscript. Additionally, social capital theory by sosial Colletta dan Cullen (2000)  and restorative justice by Braithwaite (2002) are applied to link the local wisdom of the tepung tawar tradition with contemporary conflict resolution practices. The findings of this study show that Ulu 93 E 1 contains important information about the tradition of fresh flour. This tradition, although rooted in local wisdom, remains relevant and can become social capital in a modern context to achieve social harmony.

Abstract

So far, both in studies and through readings of the Bubuksah-Gagangaking texts, there has been a determination that the characters of Bubuksah and Gagangaking are representatives of Siwa and Buddhism. The observant reader will certainly not find such a statement of association explicitly in the text. However, the voice of tradition and later interpretations give rise to such an association; Bubuksah becomes associated as a symbol representing the practice of realization of Buddhism, and Gagangaking becomes associated as a symbol representing the practice of realization of Siwa's teachings. No previous research on this text has focused on exploring this issue, either through an examination of the text itself or a search of textual sources related to Siwaism and Buddhism. Even though it's not directly mentioned in the text, this study tries to uncover the truth behind the connection by looking at how each character behaves while practicing their asceticism, which shows the different ways of understanding their practices in the text. Using critical heuristic and hermeneutic methods, this study finds two things that become the keywords of the association of the Bubuksah-Gagangaking text with Siwa and Buddhist practices; they are Ambherawa and Ambherawi. Ambherawa is the text's typical designation for the practice of Buddhism, and Ambherawi is the designation for the practice of Siwaism. Both Ambherawa and Ambherawi practices are kawi receptions in understanding the ethical elements of each teaching, which the text describes in a dialectical way between the conversations of the two characters. This discovery reveals how the kawi literary tradition of thought understands the teachings of Siwa-Buddha not merely as a doctrine but also abstracts it in the depiction of ascetic practices and elaborates the teachings of Siwa-Buddha through the depiction of the characters Bubuksah and Gagangaking. This discovery will help find out how the kawi mind comprehensively understands the teachings of Siwa and Buddha.

Abstract

This research aims to translate the book Nazm Waraqat by Shaikh Syarif al-Din Yahya al-'Imriti (890 H), from the Surau Simaung collection, West Sumatra, using the semantic translation method. The purpose of this study is to understand the application of the semantic method in the translation process, the translation techniques used, and to produce a better translation. This study has used descriptive qualitative method. The results show that the application of the semantic method is effective in maintaining the meaning, nuances, and original style of the source text while preserving the poetic style of the nazm (verse). The manuscript analysis found 145 copying errors, including additions, omissions, alterations, and substitutions, indicating the importance of editing the manuscript prior to translation. The use of Molina and Albir's translation techniques, such as borrowing and amplification successfully addressed the challenges in translating specific terms in Usul al-Fiqh. A comparison with previous translations reveals that the semantic method is more accurate in conveying the original meaning and preserving the nazm style. more effective in translating Kitab Nazm Waraqat, as it conveys the original meaning while preserving the characteristics of the nazam. This research results in an improved translation and contributes to the preservation of ancient Islamic Nusantara manuscripts.

Abstract

This paper discusses the manuscript collection of J.L. Moens, which contains many narratives of wayang plays. Most of the manuscripts come from the Yogyakarta puppetry tradition within the popular tradition originating from Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas. In addition to the narratives, these Javanese script texts are adorned with illustrations in the style of Yogyakarta wayang forms. Kasantikaning Raga is one of the titles of the manuscript that contains the story of Gathotkaca's journey and is divided into about 75 plays. Not many people have seen or even read this manuscript completely due to limited reach and lack of interest in exploring the rich written tradition that was revived by J.L. Moens. The text of the play, which is said to be based on the knowledge of Pakem Pancakaki, is presented as representative and 'rich' in interpretation and sanggit and is rarely presented as a pakeliran presentation. The opportunity to explore Gathotkaca's plays in Kasantikaning Raga in this study is mainly done with a framework starting from philological and literary studies. Through these two frameworks, it is possible to understand the type of language used in the text of the play, the narrative and dramatic structure of the puppetry, and the tendency of the view or ideology of the society that owns the text. The visual art aspect of the illustrations clarifies the meaning of the text and enriches the visual variants of wayang purwa in the regional expression style in Yogyakarta. The various plays about Gathotkaca are interesting to explore further because they concern the process of rites of passage for the human person in life. The Kasantikaning Raga manuscript is important as it serves as one of the lakon guidelines for recording the journey of the Gathotkaca figure, providing a systematic narrative sequence and supporting efforts to ground the lakon in pakeliran discourse and Yogyakarta traditional idioms.
