Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness of the implementation of video youtube to improve students' ability in writing procedure text. The method used in this research was pre-experiment with one group pretest-posttest. The population in this research were students of Class IX at SMP Negeri 8 Makassar for the 2022/2023 academic year. This research used a cluster random sampling technique. The sample was class IX.2, which consisted of 33 students. The instrument used in this research was pre-test and post-test. The results of this research, the mean score of students' pre-test and post-test increased (74.06 to 89.79). The standard deviation score for the pre-test (12.20) and post-test (11.28), showed that the standard deviation of the post-test was smaller than the standard deviation of the pre-test. The n-gain score was 0.59, with 58.57%. Then, the result of statistical hypothesis testing by using sample t-test found that (Sig < α (0.05)), Therefore, Ho was rejected and H1 was accepted, which means that the implementation of video is effective in improving students' ability in writing procedure text.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' interest in learning English. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data from this study were collected from the results of observation sheets and interviews. The subjects of this study were two English teachers and the interviews were given to 10 second-grade students of MAN 1 Makassar City selected using purposive sampling with the help of the teachers. The results of this study found that most of the students had an interest in learning English, this was evidenced by their positive responses. In conclusion, through the observation checklist, English teachers at MAN 1 Makassar City implemented the teacher relationship-building strategy for students' interests and the results of observations for students also found that most students were interested in learning English when the teacher implemented the strategy and most of the students interviewed also had a positive response about their interest in learning English. Therefore, the strategy of building teacher relationships for the benefit of students is very important and useful in the teaching-learning process, especially in English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the use of code-switching in teaching English. This research method is qualitative. To achieve the research objectives, the data collected were in the form of observation and interviews. The population of this study was a teacher who taught eleventh grade at SMAN 2 Pangkep and three students to get their perception of the use of code-switching in teaching English. The research findings showed that: 1) the teacher did code-switch at school not only in the classroom, 2) code-switching motivated the teacher to use her language interaction, and 3) the teacher’s ways used more than one language such as Bahasa Indonesia to English or English to Indonesia, it helped and motivated the students to learn English more by using code-switching step by step. According to the interview and observation from the teacher and students, using code-switching motivated them to learn English more. Most of the students agreed if the teacher used code-switching in teaching English. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of code-switching by the teacher helped the students enjoy learning English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out how students perceive the use of Grammarly Premium in the process of writing. This research applied the qualitative method to achieve the research objectives. The subjects of this research were 6 students from the English Education Department, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar, who are currently in their seventh semester of the academic year 2022/2023, The subjects were chosen by using purposive sampling. This research used the interview as the instrument of the study. The findings of this research found that students perceive positive and negative perceptions toward the use of Grammarly Premium. Positive perceptions include being easy to access and use having more complete features, can be integrated into the laptop software, motivating, and having a lot of useful features. Negative perceptions include less accurate and detailed feedback, sometimes feedback out of context, limited plagiarism feature, and requires a stable internet connection. The result showed that students’ perceptions were dominated by positive perceptions.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of Social Media improves students' speaking accuracy or not. The pre-experimental design was a method used by the Researcher with the quantitative approach that gives pre-test, treatment and last was post-test. The population is class XI SMAN 8 Makassar. The sample of students consisted of 20. This research used an instrument a speaking test which was given as a pretest, and a post-test. The results of this study proved that the students' scores before treatment and students' scores after treatment there was different score, Students' speaking accuracy after the use of social media can improve or get better than before the use of social media. It can be concluded that the use of social media Wa and Youtube has improved students' speaking accuracy in eleven-grade students of SMAN 8 Makassar.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using WhatsApp groups to improve students' vocabulary mastery. The method used was quantitative with a pre-experimental research design with a sample of 15 class VII.1 student using a cluster random sampling technique. In obtaining data, the researcher used pretest and posttest as instruments. The results of the data analysis showed that by using WhatsApp groups, students' vocabulary mastery increased. This is evidenced by the t-test value which is smaller than P (0.000 <0.05), which means that H0 in this study is rejected and H1 is accepted. So, it concluded that the use of WhatsApp group is effective in increasing the vocabulary mastery of class VII.1 student at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 40 Makassar.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out whether the application of the genre-based approach method improves students' ability to use proper grammar. This study used pre-test and post-test with one class as the subject. The researcher's method of choice was random sampling. There were 34 first-grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Sidrap (X MIPA 1) who were sampled for this study. The researcher informed us about the instruments in the pre-test and post-post using different types of texts. The t-test value of (-10.855) further supported the research findings. The researcher found that the p-value was 0.05 from the t-table of the lesson. This necessitates the use of a genre-based approach to help students with their grammar. In other words, using the genre-based approach method can help first-grade students (X MIPA 1) at SMA Negeri 3 Sidrap improve their grammar skills in terms of proper grammar usage, vocabulary, and comprehensibility.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the advantages and disadvantages of same-language subtitles on YouTube videos. The researcher applies the descriptive qualitative method to achieve the research objective. This research uses interview questions as an instrument of the study. The subject of this research is 6 students from the English Education Department 2019 academic year, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar. The subject was chosen by using purposive sampling. The results of this research revealed that students stated the advantages of same-language subtitles include high accuracy, explaining slang, and clear punctuation. Disadvantages include inaccurate timestamps, typos, and words that are not displayed.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate whether focus group discussion enriches students’ speaking abilities. This research was conducted using pre-experimental research, with 40 students in the eleventh grade (second grade of senior high school) participating in this research. The result of this research was obtained from two tests (pre-test and post-test). The pre-test revealed that there were 36 students classified as very poor and 4 students classified as fair. The post-test showed that only 15 students were classified as very poor, 12 were classified as poor, 6 were classified as fair, 3 were classified as fairly good, and 4 were classified as good. In addition, the mean score from the pre-test (24.90) to the post-test (51.40) improved. The findings of this study showed that focus group discussions could enrich students’ speaking abilities. Therefore, the focus group discussion technique, which has been widely used in the world of work and organizations, has also proven to be a good method of teaching English, especially speaking.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the strategies used by teachers to teach reading comprehension and the factors that influence teachers in choosing strategies for teaching reading comprehension. The subjects of this study were English teachers at SMPN 9 Makassar. This type of research is designed as qualitative descriptive research. To collect data in research, the researcher uses interviews. The data obtained have been processed in several ways, the first is data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the research found that the strategies used by teachers in teaching understanding were Scaffolding, Reciprocal Teaching, and QARs (Question-Answer Relationships). In choosing a strategy to teach reading comprehension, researchers found three factors that influence teachers in choosing teaching strategies, namely characteristics of students, teaching materials, and the teacher's knowledge of the strategy to be used.
