Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the type of verbs that can be placed before and after subordinate conjunctions ~to, relationship between both clauses, and grammatical meaning which is contained in the (V-ru)To (V-Ta) sentence pattern. This study uses a classification based on the theory of Tomomasu, et al and theory of Sunakawa, et al about ~to~ta pattern’s meaning which is divided into four types, there are Kikkake (trigger), Hakken (discovery), Guuzen (coincidence), and Renzoku (continuation). This study uses the Simak method for collecting the data, and using Padan Referensial method for analysis the data. Based on the analysis result, it is found that the type of verbs that can be placed before and after subordinate conjunctions ~to are same. The difference is that sonzai wo arawasu doushi (existence verbs) and joutai wo arawasu doushi (verbs that express situation) can be placed after the subordinate conjunctions ~to. Both syntactically and semantically, it is found that the subordinate conjunctions ~to in Kikkake's meaning is to show a mutual influencing relationship and the existence of a presuppositional modality also explain the causal relationship between clauses. The Hakken’s meaning is to shows an explanatory relationship also shows the discovery in the second clause. The Guuzen’s meaning connects two unrelated events and shows the movement of the third person. The Renzoku’s meaning is to relate several activities carried out on the basis of the speaker’s wishes.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning of cultural shift in the poem "Diorama" by Sosiawan Leak. The theory used for cultural shift is Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model. This research has a descriptive qualitative design with a theoretical approach to Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model. The source of research data is the poem "Diorama" by Sosiawan Leak. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis consists of an analysis of the structure in the text, cognition, and the social context that surrounds the discourse. The data collection technique uses reading techniques in the form of heuristics related to linguistics or language conventions based on interpreter findings, while hermeneutics is based on readings made to interpret the "Diorama" poem based on the scalpel used. The data analysis technique used is content analysis, with the technique of presenting research results based on the discourse analysis of the Teun A. Van Dijk model. The results show that the poem "Diorama" reflects various forms of resistance and criticism of the colonization of the media crew in an effort to reveal oppression, violence, injustice, alienation, and education that is not intellectual.

Abstract

Literature study shows that International students experience culture shock both to foreign cultures and to their own local cultures (reverse culture shock). Unfortunately, the study on resistance to reverse culture shock is rather neglected. This paper examines the students’ reverse culture shock in relation to cultural intelligence, the case of international students internship in Japan. The aim is to find out cultural intelligence, resistance to reverse culture shock, and the influence of cultural intelligence on resistance to reverse culture shock. The study uses quantitative methods with SEM-PLS statistical tests, and theoretical approaches to culture shock, reverse culture shock, and cultural intelligence. The results of the study are that international students participating in internships in Japan do not experience culture shock to Indonesian culture as a local culture. Generally, they have a good resistance to the reverse culture shock of their local culture. They do not feel a shock to Indonesian cultures as their local culture after coming back from Japan. They can resist to the reverse culture shock because they have a good cultural intelligence.  Cultural intelligence has a positive influence on the shock to local Indonesian culture. However, not all of them do not have cultural resistance with a 100% intelligence level. A small number experienced local culture shock (reverse culture shock), meaning that a small number of International students experience a slight shock to Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Alienation causes workers to feel separated and alienated from the work they are doing so that work becomes a foreign and pseudo experience. The alienation experienced by workers can not only be found in everyday life but also becomes the theme of stories in literary works. One of the literary works with the theme of alienation is the novel Koujou by Hiroko Oyamada. This article examines the alienation of temporary workers in Koujou's novel. The temporary worker alienation is shown through the character of Yoshiko Ushimaya and the character of an older brother. The research problem is examined by the alienation theory of Karl Marx and the development of the alienation theory by Melvin Seeman. This research was conducted by applying a qualitative method. Based on the research results, it can be seen that in novel Koujou the alienation of temporary workers is described in the form of 1) alienation from self-potential; 2) alienation from products and production processes; 3) alienation from other workers; and 4) alienation from the meaning of work.
