Abstract

This study examines the impact of digital storytelling on English vocabulary development among multimedia engineering students in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) context. Using a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control group design, the study evaluated the acquisition of 120 technical and academic vocabulary items, focusing on retention and contextual use. The experimental group engaged in digital storytelling activities, while the control group received traditional instruction. The results indicate that digital storytelling significantly improves vocabulary acquisition. The experimental group achieved a 30.5% increase in vocabulary recognition, outperforming the control group’s 19.3% gain. Additionally, students exposed to digital storytelling reported higher levels of engagement and confidence, which were found to positively correlate with vocabulary retention. The integration of multimodal elements-such as visuals, audio, and interactive features-enhanced learning by supporting deeper cognitive processing. These findings suggest that digital storytelling is an effective pedagogical approach for improving vocabulary development and learner motivation in multimedia engineering education. The study highlights its potential as an innovative strategy for ESP instruction, particularly for visually oriented learners in technology-driven environments.

Abstract

This study examines translanguaging practices in students’ internship reports and their implications for the sustainability of Bahasa Indonesia as an academic language. The increasing use of English terminology in professional academic writing reflects the integration of global language resources. This study aims to identify forms of translanguaging, analyze their distribution and functions, and explain their impact on the status of Bahasa Indonesia. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed using thematic analysis of 85 lexical data categorized into borrowing, hybrid, and mixing forms. The findings indicate that translanguaging is dominated by borrowing, with full English structures as the primary pattern, while Bahasa Indonesia remains the main syntactic framework through mixed constructions. These results suggest that translanguaging enhances terminological precision and communication efficiency but also reflects the growing dominance of global language. Therefore, translanguaging represents an adaptive practice that negotiates between professional communication needs and the sustainability of Bahasa Indonesia in academic contexts.

Abstract

The research objectives are to describe the types of illocutionary acts in Anies Baswedan’s utterances in the political context as a pragmatic analysis. This descriptive qualitative research collected and analyzed the data using Searle’s theory of Illocutionary Acts (2005) and Levinson’s theory of the context (1983) using 30 utterances from the “Desak Anies” program conducted in Semarang and uploaded by Metro TV to its official YouTube channel a week before election day. The research findings revealed that the most used illocutionary acts by Baswedan in the “Desak Anies” program were assertives, for 45%, used to describe the world or convey information that the speaker believes to be true. Assertive utterances aim to inform, describe, or explain and are evaluated based on truthfulness or accuracy. Assertive utterances are key communication components that help share knowledge and convey facts. Baswedan is known for his rhetorical speech and his skills in speaking to persuade or convince audiences. Baswedan uses examples, facts, and logical explanations to support his ideas/ opinions in that part.

Abstract

Writing is an essential academic skill that needs to be developed to support success in education and future careers. However, the lack of appropriate teaching methods is often the main cause of students' difficulties in developing writing skills. Therefore, teachers need to select and apply appropriate learning methods so that students can achieve optimal learning outcomes. This study aims to compare the effects of deductive and inductive learning methods on students' writing skills. The study used an experimental approach with a quasi-experimental design of the two-group pretest-posttest type. The research subjects consisted of two classes: two experimental classes that used the deductive method and one other class that used the inductive method. The instrument used was a performance test, and data analysis was carried out statistically using SPSS software. The results of the study showed that both deductive and inductive methods were equally effective in improving students' writing skills. However, based on the analysis results, no significant differences were found between the two methods on student learning outcomes in writing learning.

Abstract

Language development is a gradual process in acquiring the ability to understand and use language for communication. This process involves biological, cognitive, social, and environmental aspects. In relation to biological and cognitive aspects, individuals with cerebral palsy experience difficulties in the stages of language development. Therefore, this study aims to describe language disorders in a 25-year-old individual with cerebral palsy at the Sayap Ibu Bintaro Foundation. These language disorders are specifically examined in the phonological domain. This study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach, based on the assumption that individuals with special needs, such as cerebral palsy, possess unique characteristics that are not generalizable. The findings reveal the presence of phonological disorders, including phoneme deletion, consonant substitution, simplification of consonant clusters into the nasal sound /ŋ/, and the addition of certain sounds. These disorders are caused by limitations in the motor control of speech organs, which are associated with the subject’s neurological condition. The results of this study are expected to provide recommendations for phonological therapy patterns for individuals with cerebral palsy who experience similar language disorders.
