International Journal of Agriculture System (Int. J. Agr. Syst.- IJAS) is published by Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) twice a year in June and December. This journal is an academic, citation indexed, and blind peer-reviewed journal. It covers original research articles, short notes and communications, reviews (including book), concepts, commentaries, and letters on a diverse topic related to agricultural systems including forestry, fishery/marine, and animal sciences. The aims of this journal are to provide a venue for academicians, researchers, and practitioners to share/discuss theories, views, research results, on issues related to the science, engineering and technology, and humanities in agriculture development, management, and issues in agricultural systems, particularly in the tropics. However, any other articles related to non-tropical agricultural systems are also welcome.

Abstract

Over the years, the consumption of vegetables has grown. Due to growing consumer concern over health-related issues, this has happened. The purpose of this study is to investigate the patterns in vegetable consumption and exploration of the underlying factors for that existing pattern. In this study, information was gathered from household surveys. Data was analyzed using multinomial logistic regression and descriptive analysis. The majority (76.6%) of the respondents had up to seven family members. one-third of the sampled population falls in the service sector of the economy (43%). most of the sample households were from rural backgrounds (55.9%). Around (87.8%) of the sample population consumed less than 3 servings of vegetables in a day.  The quantity of vegetable consumption as a dependent variable has three categories less than, greater than, and equal to three serving sizes. While taking greater than three serving sizes as a reference category and less than three serving sizes as the dependent variable. It was found that as the family size increases from three members to more than that there is a likelihood increase in taking vegetables more on a per capita basis per day with an odds ratio of 0.21(0.4-0.9), similarly there is a likelihood increase in the vegetable consumption with the increase in monthly income 0.5(0.12-0.95), as the frequency of buying vegetables increases there is an increase in vegetable consumption, accessibility has also significant bearing on its intake. Due to less access to the marketplaces, rural residents have low trips to grocery shops and rely mostly on homegrown vegetables. Respondents from urban residents have frequent trips to the grocery shops mostly due to the availability of vegetables. The results show that implementing an appropriate pricing strategy and promoting market infrastructure will augment the dietary diversity in the population which will lead to the holistic development of the vegetable industry as well as the required nutritional needs efficiently.

Abstract

The sterilization is a primary step in in-vitro culture. plant breeding through in-vitro culture hinges on the successful effectiveness of the sterilization method in producing sterile plants. This research aims to optimize sterilization methods using a completely randomized factorial design. The first factor is the size of the material (small and large), and the second factor is the graded concentration of the bleach solution. The study revealed that Material sizes do not have a significant effect on contamination level, all the same, large size materials increase the survival rate of sterilized rodent tuber plants. The application of graded bleach solution concentrations at 25%, 20%, and 15% is able to reduce contamination to 0% on small size materials and 5 % on large size materials. Material sizes do not have a significant effect on contamination level, all the same, large size materials increase the survival rate of sterilized rodent tuber plants.

Abstract

An in-depth analysis of Internet of Things (IoT) applications expertise for agriculture. This article's primary purpose is to provide a comprehensive and organized review of IoT research in agriculture themes. Although recent research has offered some pertinent information regarding the analysis of IoT applications in agriculture, further information is needed. Bibliometric analysis is utilized to objectively investigate, and develop information knowledge of IoT applications in agriculture. The papers investigated and examined the themes of IoT-agriculture by analyzing the co-occurrence keywords. The analysis began by picking 550 papers from the Scopus database that were published from 2003 to May 2023. The results show that IoT agriculture papers have grown rapidly since 2015 until now. The three journals that published the most IoT agricultural publications are Sensors (Switzerland), Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, and IEEE Access. Based on the co-occurrence keywords, the focus of IoT paper in agriculture is wireless sensors network (WSN) and radio frequency identification (RFID) for agricultural monitoring, smart agriculture with IoT blockchain and machine learning, IoT greenhouses with cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), components of IoT agriculture, precision agriculture with low power low range (LoRa) communication network and IoT cloud platform, smart farming with sensor networks and automation. The study provided an understanding of themes of the IoT agriculture that has been carried out and its future growth. The future of IoT application will elaborate a system efficient, consumes less energy, and emits less carbon dioxide. It has begun by combining IoT-agriculture with the technology edge-fog-cloud layer.

Abstract

This study examines whether taking advantage of off-farm employment as an alternative income source improves the welfare of rural households in Indonesia. Using a panel data set from rural households in Central Sulawesi, the effect of off-farm diversification examines on total household income and economic mobility over time. A fixed effects and random effects model with an instrumental variable is applied in analyzing the causal effects of off-farm employment. The findings confirm substantial growth stemming from work outside of a household’s farming, which is shown to improve income and economic mobility in rural areas. Off-farm work was found to positively affect total household income, which increased by 63.20% in real Indonesia rupiah (IDR) in conjunction with the number of men in the family and cocoa cultivation. The results also indicate a need for a policy that encourages off-farm employment, particularly for value-added activities that are accessible to lower-income groups to improve income and reduce poverty among the poor

Abstract

Natural silk is an agro-industrial activity that includes aspects of cultivation and related industrial aspects. This study aims to determine and analyze women's time allocation for each activity in the natural silk agribusiness business in Soppeng Regency. The research was conducted from December 2021 to January 2022 in Donri-Donri and Lilirilau Districts, Soppeng Regency. The research method used is descriptive with a quantitative approach. Data were obtained through field observations, interviews and by distributing questionnaires. The results obtained are the outpouring of working time based on the analysis of working people's days in mulberry cultivation activities, the working time range is 1-3 hours/day having an average working time of 4.05 HOK, silkworm cultivation activities have a working time span of 5-8 hours/day has an average working time of 5.05 HOK, spinning cultivation activities have a working time of 4 – 10 hours/day has an average working time of 0.09 HOK, weaving activities work time span of 4 – 6 hours /day has an average working time of 0.09 HOK, and distribution and marketing activities with a working time span of 8 hours/day has an average working time of 13.04 HOK. The time spent on each sub-system activity in natural silk agribusiness is different because it is influenced by each process carried out in the course of the activity.

Abstract

Rice is the main staple food in Indonesia, and Sidenreng Rappang District contributes significantly to rice production in South Sulawesi Province. However, rice distribution in this area faces significant challenges, including long marketing channels and high marketing margins, which disadvantage farmers. The Muhammadiyah United Economic Assembly plays an important role in optimizing distribution channels, providing access to financing to farmers, and facilitating cooperation between farmers and marketing institutions. This research used observation, interview, and documentation methods, with primary and secondary data. The results showed that the marketing margin of rice in Sidenreng Rappang District reached IDR 23,650/kg, with the largest profits enjoyed by wholesalers and retailers. Improving more efficient distribution channels can reduce marketing margins and improve farmers' welfare. Therefore, the role of the Economic Assembly of Muhammadiyah Association is crucial in creating a more efficient trade system and improving the economic welfare of the people in Sidenreng Rappang District.

Abstract

Community empowerment programs aim to empower farmers by providing them access to the resources, training, technology, and support needed to increase agricultural productivity, increase income, and achieve agricultural desires. However, the success of such programs highly depends on the active participation of farmers. Factors influencing farmer participation in the NCEP program were analyzed using a binary logistic regression approach using STATA (Statistics and Data). Several factors are thought to influence farmer participation in the NCEP program, namely age, education level, income level, community meetings, participation in cooperatives, and participation in savings and loans. The results of the analysis show that what is influential at the 1% error level are the variables education, community meetings, and participation in savings and loans. Meanwhile, the influence at the 5% error level is the cooperative variable. Further efforts are needed regarding outreach to farmers who have not participated in the program and the government is expected to create a special strategy to attract farmers' interest in joining and participating in the Community Empowerment National Program (NCEP), so that farmer welfare and productivity can be achieved. In addition, it is suggested that cooperatives and savings and loans actively provide easy access to information and capital as well as increase their activities to support farmers in implementing the NCEP program.

Abstract

Rhychoporus spp., commonly known as the sago beetle Rhychoporus ferrugineus, is a pest that affects aren, rumbia, and coconut plants. Despite its pest status, the larvae of Rhychoporus spp. have long been recognized for their value as food and as ingredients in medicine and cosmetics. This comprehensive research, which thoroughly investigates the morphological characteristics and nutritional components of Rhychoporus spp. found in aren plants in Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province, aims to provide a reliable and valid understanding of this species. The findings of this study have potential applications in the fields of entomology and food science. For entomologists, the detailed morphological characteristics of Rhychoporus spp. can aid in species identification and classification. For food scientists, the nutritional components of the larvae can be used to explore its potential as a food source and its applications in medicine and cosmetics. A descriptive method was used, involving field and laboratory research. The field study was conducted in Walensorit Village, Minahasa Regency. Morphological research used the Mizzi method, with measurements conducted using Carl Zeiss and Hirox KH8700 microscopes. The nutritional analysis included moisture, ash, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and fiber content, using standard methods such as drying, Kjeldahl analysis, Soxhlet extraction, and proximate analysis. The average body length of Rhychoporus spp. was 28.574 mm, with variations in abdomen length (8.936 mm), pronotum length (7.899 mm), head size (6.299 mm), and pronotum width (6.508 mm). The physicochemical analysis revealed that the larvae contain 70.04% water, 3.66% minerals, 1.35% calcium, 1.18% phosphorus, and 0.66% coconut minerals. The protein content was 7.78%, fat 19.04%, crude fiber 0.62%, and carbohydrates 2.33%. These comprehensive findings contribute to a better understanding of the species and its potential uses.
