Abstract

Adolescence is a stage of development in life that is full of emotional turmoil, conflict, and stress, of which often lead to teenagers’ vulnerability to depression symptoms. A potential serious case if the depression symptoms are not treated well includes risk of suicidal ideation and  suicide behaviour. This research aims to investigate and test the role of self-compassion to depression symptoms in teenagers mediated by emotion regulation-cognitive reappraisal. Participants in this research were 627 teenagers (N=627) with an age range of 15-18 years old, including 508 girls (81%) and 119 boys (19%). Mediation analysis using Process by Andrew F. Hayes, model 4, shows that emotion regulation —cognitive reappraisal (p=0.001; p<0.05) mediates the role of self-compassion to depression symptoms in teenagers. Emotion regulation—cognitive reappraisal serves as a partial mediator to the role of self-compassion to depression symptoms. Teenagers with self-compassion treat themselves positively by realizing and accepting negative emotions that leads to reduction of these negative emotions. It improves the capability of cognitive reappraisal, that brings  new interpretation towards a more positive view for reducing depression symptoms.

Abstract

Trail Making Test (TMT) has been widely used in Indonesia as an Executive Function (EF) test, however, no studies reported validity and reliability of the test. In this study, we analyzed TMT’s psychometric properties, including reliability and validity, effect of demographic variables such as education, age, and sex on the TMT, and propose norm scores for the urban population of Java Island. Four hundred ninety persons (aged 16-80 years) with varying education levels participated in the study. Four additional EF tests (Digit Span, Five Point, phonemic Verbal Fluency, and Stroop) were administered. Principal Component Analysis was used to test whether the structure of TMT supported theoretical foundations of EF. The test-retest reliability was estimated in different samples (N = 50). Results suggest that education increased and age decreased the performance, however there were no differences between high school graduates and undergraduates in the age range 16-39 years. The intraclass correlation as a reliability measure showed good results (TMTA, rs=0.76; TMT B, rs= 0.86; TMT B-A, rs=0.74). The PCA revealed that the TMT, Digit Span, and Five Point scores loaded highly on one construct, while Stroop, phonemic Verbal Fluency, and errors on Five Point test loaded highly on other. It can be concluded that TMT is a valid neuropsychological instrument measuring EF with high reliability score and has high sensitivity for education, and age effects. The study also provides TMT Norms and cut-off scores for Javanese population between 16 and 39 years old with senior high school and undergraduate level of education.

Abstract

Rape cases involve various factors and perspectives. This study explored factors in constructing the perspective of justice among advocates of rape victims in Malang, East Java. This study adopted the qualitative phenomenology approach with semi-structured in-depth interview for data collection, and thematic analysis as the data analysis technique. The participants of this study were six advocates from two different women support groups and two experts, one was a Law lecturer and an investigator in the Woman and Children Service Unit (Unit Pelayanan Perempuan dan Anak) (UPPA) at Malang Police Department. The result revealed that justice perspectives of advocates were mainly rooted in the feminist concept at their ideological level; and therefore, the perceived meaning of justice tend to be idealistic and participants were rather dissatisfied with the existing legal system. Participants further expressed their self-interest to advocate based on the shared gender identity as women with the rape victims. As such, findings of this study might inform the evaluation of prevailing procedure and the substances of law enforcement leading to accommodating the needs of rape victims.

Abstract

Social skills have been known to predict bullying tendencies in adolescence. However, knowledge about the mechanisms by which social skills are linked to bullying tendency remains limited. The present study investigated whether friendship quality would mediate the link. A sample of 204 adolescents (16-18 years old; 163 girls; 41 boys) studying in Yogyakarta state high schools completed an online self-report of Bullying Tendency Scale, Social Skills Scale, and Friendship Quality Scale. Mediation analysis was conducted using PROCESS macro. Results showed that friendship quality could not mediate social skills with bullying tendency therefore hypothesis of this study was denied. However, by including gender, it was found that friendship quality has a significant role as a mediator for boys. Higher social skills were associated with higher friendship quality, and then higher friendship quality was associated with higher bullying tendency. It can be concluded that social skills are important for boys and girls to exercise positive interaction with peers and to have high friendship quality. However, it is more important for boys to have high friendship quality with positive peers.

Abstract

Indonesian society is undergoing a shift of behavioral patterns towards the coronavirus (COVID) 19 indicating the symptoms of the pandemic fatigue phenomenon. Pandemic fatigue is defined as a gradual demotivation to adhere to recommended protective behaviors. Pandemic fatigue might reduce the effectiveness of health protocols and accelerate the spread of the virus. This study aims to examine the pandemic fatigue sentiment of Indonesian twitter-users chronologically and the factors causing the development of pandemic fatigue sentiment. The method of this study includes digital ethnographic theory using sentiment analysis based on the Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) algorithm and topic modelling using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) analysis. The results showed a pattern of sentiment degression towards health protocols indicating the pandemic fatigue phenomenon. The factors causing the sentiment degression were influenced by three themes: (1) public criticism of the government's efforts to handle the spread of COVID-19, (2) experience in implementing health protocols, and (3) statements that against the government’s efforts to handle the spread of COVID-19. Based on the results of sentiment analysis and topic modelling, this study presents a public policy design referencing the World Health Organization (WHO) framework for community reinvigoration in the midst of pandemic fatigue that could be used for the government to undertake broader reforms to public health and social care for Indonesian society.

Abstract

Pursuing a romantic relationship is one of the most important developmental aspects of emerging adults. With the increasing divorce rate in Indonesia, the authors were interested in exploring how emerging adults make sense of romantic relationships after parental divorce. Three participants and two significant others were interviewed in this present study, in which interpretive phenomenological analysis was used as the approach to interpreting the data. This study generated two themes that show how emerging adults make meaning of romantic relationships, namely as a source of fear and a source of support. This contradictory meaning-making relates to the experience the participants had during their parents' divorce process and what they learned from the media or their significant others. These, coupled with human agency and the need for love, encourage the participants to learn from their parents' mistakes, develop certain behavioural patterns, and continue to seek romantic relationships in their lives. This study shows how interaction between parents during a divorce process can shape the meaning-making and behaviour patterns in the child’s romantic relationships. Therefore, it is suggested that divorced parents build an open communication, show positive interactions, and minimize exposing their children to negative interactions during the divorce process.
