Abstract

As communication technologies such as e-mail have becoming indispensable for business communication, the study of the use and effects of technologies is increasingly relevant. This study is aimed at analyzing the correlation between personality traits and the choice of communication media. Research data from 22 studies published in the journals and the articles posted in the internet in the years of 1999 – 2006 were analyzed using meta analysis technique. The total of 4267 participants were involved in the research. Analysis was focused only on the correlation between three personality traits: extraversion, neuroticism, openness to experience, and the use of email. Two statis¬tical technique error corrections were applied in analyzing the data, namely sampling error correction and measurement error correction. It was found that after sampling error correction was calculated the correlation between extraversion and email usage was (ř) = 0,33. Further, when measurement error was also calculated, the correlation between those two variables increased to (ρ) = 0,38. When sampling error corection was applied, the correlation between neuroticism and email usage was (ř) = 0,13. Similar to extra¬version when measurement error was cor¬rect¬ed, the correlation between these two variables increased to (ρ) = 0,14. The corre¬la¬tion between openness to experience with email usage was (ř) = 0,30 when sampling error correction was calculated. Further when the measurement error correction was applied the coeficient correlation was increas¬ed to (ρ) = 0,33. These findings indi¬cated that personality traits correlate with email usage. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of active-construc-tive play to increase second grade elementary students’ reading ability. The posttest only design with non equivalent controlled group was used as the experimental design of this research. Thirty subjects, seven year-old second grade elementary students was assign to experi¬mental group (15 subjects) and control group (15 subjects) without ran¬domi-zation. Five kinds of active-constructive play were used to raise cognitive components of reading. Data was analyzed using Ana¬lysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with intelli¬gence as covariable. The result indicated no difference between control group and experi¬mental group in reading ability (F = 3, 271 ; p = 0,082). According to the test result, active-constructive play wasn’t effective to increase second grade elementary students’ reading ability. Keywords: active-constructive play, reading ability.

Abstract

Mall is a kind of very attractive public facilities that resemble product of technology. In addition to the need of high legibility for optimal use, visitor evacuation with relatively shorter reaction time is desired during emergency situation. The present research is conducted to study: (a) spatial cognition performance of human when short reaction time is demanded, and (b) utilization of such performance with You Are Here (YAH) map as cognitive navi¬gation tool for better emergency responds. The research method contains an expe-rimental work conducted at a real new mall building, involving 160 subjects and 18 experimenters. In this experiment, subjects were assigned to do wayfinding tasks, which covers finding way out through emergency stairs and exit. Prior to wayfinding, subjects were asked to look at a YAH map that has been manipulated in terms of the type (North Up Orientation/NUO or inline egodirec¬tion), and its placement rotation (R0, R45, R90, R135, R180, R225, R270, R315). Subjects were assigned to rank degree of clarity of 3 leaflets containing information of emergency responds at public building, to make scats map for assessing their cognitive map representation ability, and to answer questions related to the information covered in the leaflet. The following conclusions could be drawn: (a) there is a difference in wayfinding (finding way out through emergency stairs and exit) reaction time between YAH map that follow NUO and that of inline egodi¬rection; wayfinding reaction time of inline egodirection map is lower than that of NUO map; (b) there is a difference in the number of direction mistake during wayfinding between YAH map that follow NUO and that of inline egodirection; the number of direction mistake of inline egodirection map is lower than that of NUO map; (c) there is a combination of YAH map type and the way it is placed that results in relatively shorter wayfinding reaction time, i.e.: those that affecting mental rotation equal to zero; (d) there is a kind of leaflet that could be correctly perceived within a relatively short time; (e) in general all subject possess high cognitive map representation ability that could be utilized in cognitive navigation during emergency. Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to explore family burden, coping, and support for psychotic patients in a Javanese setting. A combination of ethnographic and clinical methodology was employed. During my fieldwork in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, I followed 9 participants diagnosed as having first episode psychosis. Three of them met the ICD-10 criteria for Schizophrenia, five for Acute and Transient Psychotic Disorder (ATPD), and one for Schizoaffective Disor¬der. I carried out ethnographic fieldwork among nine participants and their families in their natural home setting, as well as conducting in-depth interviews. In addition, I administered the Family Crisis Oriented Personal Evaluation Scale (F-COPES) for family members and Sentence Completion Test (SCT). The result indicated that despite experiencing psychological and economic burden, families provided a high level of support for their mentally ill members which are reflected in the application of Javanese principle of ngemong. Three aspects the practice of ngemong is discussed. Keywords: family, psychotic illness, bur¬den, coping, support, Javanese culture

Abstract

child sexual Abuse (CSA) is a form of violation against children's rights and it leads to various negative effects on them. In order to protect them, it is necessary to conduct primary prevention by developing teachers to be CSA-preventing agents. Therefore, they need good self-efficacy in teaching about the issues that their students will be able to comprehend it well. This study aimed to observe the improvement of teachers’ self-efficacy related to their teaching of the issue. This study used a quantitative research method with the untreated control group design with a dependent pretest and posttest sample. The subjects of this research were elementary schoolteachers chosen purposively. Mixed ANOVA analysis was used to measure the increase of teachers’ self-efficacy in teaching this issue to their students. The self-efficacy of teachers in the experiment group was higher than those in the control group.
