Abstract

This study aims at uncovering: (1) whether the problem-based learning (PBL) method is effective to teach a theoretical subject such as Personality Psychology II; (2) how effective is the PBL method compared to the traditional method to teach a theoretical subject such as Personality Psychology II; and (3) whether the teacher factors affect the effectiveness of the PBL method to teach a theroretical subject such as Personality Psychology II. Three available classes of Subjects enrolling in Personality Psychology II, two of which were taught with the PBL method by a senior-male-demanding teacher and a junior-female-easy-going teacher respectively while the other one was taught with the traditional method by the senior-male-demanding teacher, participated in the study. Designed as a quasi-experimental research, the results showed that the first two aims of the study were confirmed. Regarding the teacher factors effect, the study showed a direct and positive relation between the Subjects’ number of study hour and their achievement disregarding both the teaching method and the teacher factors as well as a complicated relation between the Subjects’ learning satisfaction and their achievement presu¬mably involving both the teaching method and the teacher factors with the various aspects of teacher competencies. A further study on the last matter seems to be needed. Keywords: problem-based learning, out¬come-oriented assessment, pro¬cess-oriented self-directed learn¬ing, independent learning.

Abstract

Since Hofstede (1980) published his research about individualism-collectivism differences among countries, interest in cross-cultural study increased dramatically. However not all studies support each other. So the purpose of this study is to evaluate primary studies that studied individualism-collctivism differences. Articles selected from electronic data¬base (e.g. Proquest, EBSCO, and ERIC) for publication. Forty nine studies were found, but only 15 studies that were relevant. After final evaluation, only 3 studies with 7 data points that actually could be analized. This study found that there are diffe-rences between individualist and collectivist countries in horizontal collectivism. People in collectivist countries are more collectivist than people in individualist countries. In vertical individualism, horizontal indivi¬dualism, and vertical collectivism dimension, homogeneity coefficient (Q) shows that sample drawn from the same source differ systematically. However we can not do moderator analysis because of number of studies are limited. Thus, this study can not explain moderator variables that influence effectc size variation. Keywords: Individualism, Collectivism, meta-analysis.

Abstract

The objec¬tive of this research is to find whether, there are differences of emotion expression in three generation of Javanese culture in Yogya¬karta. This research is a quanti¬tative study, using Display Rules Assessment Inventory (DRAl). The subjects of this study were late adolescent, early adulthood and middle adulthood who were born and live in Yogyakarta. The result of this research shows, there was no difference of emotion expression in different generation of Javanese culture in Yogyakarta (F = 1,042 ; P = 0,356;). All three generation expressed emotion in the same way. This result describes that three generation categories who have been researched are still in the same norms on display rules of emotion in all situation. The researcher argue that the result is influenced by Javanese culture. The Javanese values of respect and the maintenance of social harmony (rukun) are base on principles of normative and moral guidance for social interaction within both the family and community. The strong emphasis on rukun (social harmony) has marked the typical Javanese as inexpressive, avoiding social and personal conflict. These values virtues contribute to harmonious social integration. Ideal human virtues include obedience to superiors (manut), generosity, avoidance of conflict, understanding of others, and empathy. These moral compo¬nents and values that colourize Javanese society are internalized by the children during the earliest years, and significant forces motivating the child's behaviour later in adulthood. Keywords: Expression emotion, three generation (late adolescent, early adulthood and middle adulthood), Javanese culture.

Abstract

By considering the impact of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to the future children education, the exploration of intelligence test result charac-teristic of children with ADHD is needed. The purpose of the explanation is to help children with ADHD to cope their obstacle in actualizing their intelligence potency through appropriate educational guidance. Intelligence test result characteristic with Wechsler Intelligence Children Scale (WISC) test is explored on 10 boys with ADHD aged 6 – 12 years old in Surabaya. The data is interpreted according to Glasser and Zimmerman, Ogdon Sattler, and Jose/ Goewens reference and is described with the additional data quantitatively. Children with ADHD have low score in some WISC sub¬tests. The rank of the scores from the lowest is object assembly, picture arrangement, information, comprehension, digit span, and block design. The subtests reflect the limited capacity of children with ADHD in visual motor coordination, visual perception organization, visual-spatial relationship and field dependence, sequence ability, planning ability, effects of uncer¬tainty, and social sensitivity. By knowing these limitations, it is understandable why children with ADHD have problems in behavior, social, cognitive, academic, and emotional. The limitations of ADHD children in actualizing their intelligence potency is related to the disfunction of the right hemisphere. Keywords: Intelligence test, WISC, ADHD.

Abstract

Psychotic illness is the most severe form of mental illness. Most of psychological and psychiatric literatures focus on the clinical sympstoms. Very few try to understand the phenomenon from the pasient’s subjective perspective. This article aimed at providing an empathic understanding of having psychotic experience. Using ethnographic method, the researcher worked very closely with nine Javanese who experienced psychotic illness for the first time. The psychotic experiences were narrated by the participants themselves and crossed checked with their families. This article discussed the experience of psychosis from the moment of developing psychological and socio-cultural conflicts which was buried inside (the phase of burrying inside), followed by the emerging of psychotic experience (the phase of escaping control). This paper analyzed how Javanese cultural background of the participants were integrated into psychotic experiences. The themes of kaget (being startled), bingung (confused) and teror (terror) will be discussed. Keywords: psychotic illness, ethnographic, Javanese culture

Abstract

This research is a case study conducted at the Unit Konsultasi Psikologi (Psycho-logical Consulting Unit) of the Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University. Five cases of school refusal on children and adolescents were studied qualitatively to examine the patterns of symptoms and causes of school refusal, the personality types, the family profiles, and the accom¬plishment of treatments applied. Data was gathered using clinical assessments including clinical observations, interview, intelligence tests (the WISC, SPM), and personality tests (the drawing tests, the Children’s Sentence Completion Tests). Symptoms of school refusal as observed from the clients include psychological – such as irritability and bad mood in the morning, as well as physiological – such as headache and diarrhea. School refusal, as seen from the cases, usually are precipitated by a negative experience at school, but roots in the frail, vulnerable nature of personality of the subjects. The clients’ personality is characterized with low self-esteem and high dependency. Four of five patients were last child and the other one was only child, suggesting that birth constellation may correlate with the incidence of school refusal on children and adolescents. The type of parenting that prolongs unhealthy attach-ment and does not promote sufficient inde-pendence may explain this correlation. Furthermore, the fact that four of five clients came from relatively problematic families may also indicate that children from such a family may have higher susceptibility to school refusal. Abstract

This study was directed to explore the grasshopper phenomenon, the professional workers who always moved from job to jobs. It was intended to understand and explain why individual professional changed his/her jobs repeatedly. Qualitative research approach with case study as the research strategy was implemented. Based on the story revealed from the respondents, this research explained that the grasshoppers individuals moved from one job to another because of motivational factors (such as financial, willing to learn, willing to search more challenging jobs, etc), basic need factors (self-fulfillment and a need to share), and supporting factors (such as networking, family support, etc). This study showed that being a grasshopper served as a tool for achieving the vision, that is to fulfill the two basic needs (self fulfillment and a need to share). Abstract

Interaction between human and techno-logy sometime is not yet optimum due to the fact that psychological aspect has not been thoroughly considered. Mall is a kind of very attractive public facilities that resemble product of technology. High degree of legibi-lity is needed for optimal use of the mall. The present research is conducted to study: (a) spatial cognition performance of human when short reaction time is demanded, and (b) utilization of such performance with You Are Here (YAH) map as cognitive navigation tool for better legibility. The research method consist of 3 stages: (a) status survey to 20 malls at several big cities in Java, (b) preliminary experiment at a new building with its setting satisfies mall characteristics, and (c) experimental research conducted at a new mall building, involving 160 subjects. Subjects were assigned to do wayfinding tasks, which include: finding a room at the same and different floors. Prior to wayfinding, subjects were asked to look at a YAH map that has been manipulated in terms of the type (North Up Orientation/ NUO or inline egodirection), and its place¬ment rotation (R0, R45, R90, R135, R180, R225, R270, R315). Subjects were assigned to make scats map for assessing their cognitive map representation ability. The following conclusions could be drawn: (a) there is a difference in wayfinding reaction time between YAH map that follow NUO and that of inline; wayfinding reaction time of inline map is lower than that of NUO; (b) there is a difference in wayfinding reaction time among various rotation of YAH map that follow NUO; up to rotation of 1800, the more the rotation the longer the reaction time will be; (c) there is no diffe¬ren¬ce in wayfinding reaction time among various rotation that follow inline principle; (d) there is a difference in the number of direc¬tion mistake during wayfinding bet¬ween YAH map that follow NUO and that of inline; the number of mistake of inline map is lower than that of NUO map; (e) there is a combination of YAH map type and the way it is placed (rotation) that results in relative¬ly shorter wayfinding reaction time, i.e.: those that affecting mental rotation equal to zero; (f) in general all subject possess high cognitive map representation ability that could be utilized in cognitive navigation during wayfinding.
