Comic strip as a work of art which commonly aims as entertainment is also used to promote the value of the author in certain societal issues. Thus, comic strip such as KOSTUM or Komik Strip Untuk Umum (Comic Strip for Public) is using satirical jokes to share the idea of multiculturalism that has been challenged by people who use religious identity, ethnicity and political factions as the thing to differentiate others. Therefore, this paper will try to reveal how this comic strip promotes Indonesian national identity and how the author sees himself as the agent of multiculturalism.

Abstract

This creative thesis aims to show depressive symptoms in men, the stigma associated with depression, and the way stigma impacts depressed individuals by means of a screenplay. Using drama as the genre and psychological drama as the sub-genre, I exploit the emotional strain of the main character to show the struggles of male depression as well as the brutal consequences of stigma. The screenplay, titled Coda, follows Arya, a boy who struggles with depression and stigma associated with depression. As the story progresses, Arya’s mental health condition increasingly declines. Arya exhibits depressive symptoms although they are not typically recognized as depression. These include frequent irritability and inappropriate anger, escapists behavior, physical symptoms, problems with drug use, and risky behavior. In addition to that, Arya also experiences personal stigma from his family, which gradually affects their relationship and ultimately leads him to impulsively commit suicide. Keywords: Male depression, stigma, impact

Abstract

This study is intended to find out the pedagogic goals, interactional features, and L2 classroom modes appeared in the fourth graders’ English classroom taught by senior English teacher. Conducting this study, I apply Walsh’s (2006, 2011) SETT (Self-Evaluation of Teacher Talk) framework. The data was collected for two meetings. The findings of this study show that among 18 pedagogic goals, 16 of them appeared. Moreover, all of 14 interactional features and all of four modes appeared in this study.Among the four modes, managerial mode was the most frequent mode (54.54%). In conclusion, the teacher could make the class interactive because she allowed learners to formulate responses for seconds so that learners could contribute more. Moreover, the teacher rarely completed learners’ contribution and corrected learners’ mistakes directly so that the learners might feel confident to contribute in the activities.

Abstract

The researcher intends to find out how the culture of the husband, which is a Chinese Indonesian can affect or change his wife’s cultural identity as a Javanese amidst the oppression from the Suharto’s government. Cultural theories related to cultural identity will be used to analyse the findings from the respondent. The research will be conducted in semi-structured interview to gain the data from the respondent. The findings suggest that the respondent’s cultural identity as a Javanese develops and shifts. Even though she still has some Javanese culture aspects, the husband indeed influenced the respondent’s identity by his actions and made the respondent embrace some Chinese values like hardworking and discipline. Keywords: intercultural marriage; cultural identity; Chinese Indonesian; Javanese; culture

Abstract

In this study, the writer analysed the visual and the verbal data from four of GEICO’s 2010 advertisement campaign using speech acts theories. The illocutionary acts that are found in the advertisements are representatives (16), followed by expressives (4), and directives (4). Through the speech acts types and the visuals, GEICO wants to persuade the audiences to emotionally believe in their company and hopefully use their insurance service. From this study, the writer wants to say that through constructing and formulating the right words in literary works adaptation, one can create a powerful promotion tool that will persuade the audiences to do some beneficial future actions for the speaker. Key words: Speech act, nursery rhyme, short story, advertisement, persuasion, emotional connection.

Abstract

The writer researches the language use of husband and wife in their reconciliation processes and its connection to the reconciliation processes. She uses a film, entitled “Not Easily Broken” (2009) as the representative of reconciliation of husband and wife. She researches the Speech Act of Dave and Clarice during their reconciliation processes. The writer uses the Speech Act theory (Austin, 1962; Searle, 1969; Yule, 1996) and the reconciliation process (Huyse, 2003). Inthe findings of the research, the highest illocution is ‘Representative’ and automatically, the highest perlocution is from ‘Representative’. In the first and second stages, most of the perlocution does not match but in the last stage, all perlocutions match to the illocution and the reconciliation is accomplished. The conclusion is a couple should accept the fact and truth to each other to accomplish reconciliation process.

Abstract

Rhema Tours and Travel is a travel agency located in Jalan Jemursari 234A that specializes in Christian pilgrimage trips. It offers tours to Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and Europe. There were only a few people who know about Rhema Tours and Travel. This is probably due to ineffective promotional tools. Rhema Tours and Travel had brochures and company profiles to promote their Holy-land tours. However, those promotional tools are not very effective since they did not highlight the uniqueness of Rhema’s Holy Land Tours. Therefore, I made a marketing booklet to serve as an effective promotional tool that can promote Rhema’s Holy Land tours to customers by highlighting its uniqueness.

Abstract

This thesis aims to discuss  the anxiety and defense mechanism of three main characters of the superhero movies, namely, Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The three main characters discussed have the capabilities to save the world. Yet, despite their capabilities as superheroes, they have their own weaknesses, just like human beings. In my analysis, I investigate  the weaknesses of the main characters, namely, Captain America, Ironman, and Thor. Using Cramer’s concept of anxiety and defense mechanism (1991, 2009, 2016), I find that their weaknesses triggers anxiety. In return, their anxiety creates fear and guilt. These fear and guilt lead Captain America, Ironman, and Thor to developing their defense mechanism. However, each main character use different kinds of defense mechanism. Captain America uses denial. Ironman uses denial and rationalization. Thor uses repression. To sum up, I conclude that although the main characters in The Avengers and The Avengers: Age of Ultron are superheroes, they have their own weaknesses and they are still human. Keywords: Defense mechanism, anxiety, movie, action

Abstract

Shounen is one of the most popular genres of anime. Although Shounen is usually targeted at younger boys, it is often consumed by audiences of all ages, such as Naruto and its sequel, Naruto Shippuden. In this study, I will focus on identifying the masculinity within the male ninjas in the series and analyzing the motivations behind the exercise of masculinity to find the ideal masculinity. I will combine the masculinity theory with the Japanese’s manhood, to analyze the ideal masculinity in the text. Through my analysis, I find that the male ninjas of these anime series show different kinds of masculinity, which divides them into two roles, protagonist and antagonist. The protagonists are the ones who thrive to fight for others while the antagonists fight only to benefit themselves. As a result, the protagonists are able to possess the ideal masculinity as they can exercise their masculinity positively. Keywords: anime, masculinity, male ninjas, protagonist, antagonist.
